FASTENING DEVICE FOR GARMENT STRAPS Ffiled March 15, 1928 glvwentoz ll III-- 4 .L .HLKeZZ? Patented Mar. 25, 1930 PATENT OFFICE LILLUS A. KELLEY, OF CALISTOGA, CALIFORNIA FASTENING DEVICE FUR GARMENT STRAPS Application filed March 15, 1928. Serial No. 261,949.
This invention relates to fastening or holding devices designed primarily for use in se curing garment straps to a garment, the invention being particularly designed for use in connection with ladies garments.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a fastening device so formed that an end of a strap may be threaded therethrough and adjustably held thereby in such a manner that the terminal of the strap will be hidden behind the main body portion thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a fastening device which will firmly hold a strap in adjusted position but may be readily loosened to disengage the strap to permit taking up of the same.
The invention consists in the details of con struction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved shoulder strap for ladies garments whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a shoulder strap and fastening means therefor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of one of the plates comprised in the rear fastener;
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of the second plate comprised in the rear fastener and carried by the shoulder strap;
Figure 4 is an elevational view of the plate comprised in the front fastener.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 denotes the top band or hem of an undergarment of any desired style with which are adapted to be operatively engaged the shoulder straps 2.
Each of the shoulder straps 2 has one end portion provided with a loop 3 which surrounds the central bar 4 of an elongated fiat member 5, said member 5 above and below the bar 4 being provided with slots 6 parallel to each other and to the bar 1 to permit the requisite connection of the strap 2. The strap 2 is also threaded through the spaces 7 of a flat plate 8 adapted to be stitched at its opposite end portions closely against the inner surface of the band or hem 1. These spaces 7 are provided by forming parallel slots through and longitudinally of the central portion of the plate 8, as at 9, thus forming the parallel bars 10. The plate 8 is adapted to be arranged in proper position at the rear of the garment while to the forward portion of the garment is stitched at its opposite end portions the plate 11 provided at the top and bottom with the spaced members 12 connected at their opposite end portions by the intermediate connecting strips 1-1.
Each of the members 12 is formed to pro-v vide a pair of longitudinally extending slots 17 adjacent each side edge thereof and a cen tral longitudinally extending slot 17 of greater width than and between the side slots, as shown. The side slots 17 are thus divided by a longitudinally extending bar 16.
Extending longitudinally of the central portion ofthe member 12 and of the central slot 17 thereof is a bar 18 which is slidably engaged at each end over an intermediate connecting strip 1 1 to permit it to be shifted transversely of the member. One side edge of the bar 18 is toothed as indicated at 19, this toothed edge coac-ting with an adjacent portion of the member dividing one of the slots 17 from the central portion 17 to engage the strap 2 when the same has been passed therebetween as hereinafter described.
When the plate member 12 has been applied to a garment and the strap 2 is to be attached thereto, the free end of the strap is threaded down through the uppermost pair of slots 17 to the lower side of the bar 18 where it is passed through the slot 17 under the bar 18 and brought back up over the bar 18 where it is again passed through the slot 17 and up through the upper slots 17 over the center bar 16 thereof coming out against the forward faces of the member 12 between the same and the adjacent body portion of the strap. From this it will be readily understood that the terminal portion of the strap will be covered by the strap proper and that portion of the strap passing between the toothed edge of the bar 18 and the toothed portion of the plate will be securely gripped so that slipping of the strap will be prevented. 0 From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a shoulder strap for ladies garments constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this rea- 20 son I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precisearrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. I claim A fastening device adjustable for securing a garment supporting strap to a garment, comprising a fiatbody formed to provide two groups of bar members, the members of each group being separated to form slots for the reoeptionof a strap, said groups of bars being separated to. form a relatively wide central slot therebetween and substantially, parallel therewith, strap engaging teeth formed along a bar of one of said groups borderinglsaid central slot, a strap engaging bar extending longitudinally of the central slot and shiftable transversely thereof, said bar having teeth along one side for coaction 4 with the first mentioned teeth, and means whereby said body may be secured to a. gar
