COMBINATION STOP AND TAIL LIGHT I Filed March 28, 1927 u H TTORNE).
Patented Mar. 18, 1930 UNITED STATE$ lasa n- PAT '2:
NT orFicE COMBINATION STOP AND TAIL LIGHT Application and March 28,
An object of my invention is to provide a combination stop and tail light which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which is effective in operation.
Another object is to provide a combination stop and tail light in which astandard two filament head light bulb may be used.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying. drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my light. I Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2,
Fig. 3 is a wiring diagram of my light. Referring more particularly to the drawing:
The numeral 1 which indicates a casing comprising a single compartment. A lens 2 is secured over the front open face of the casing and it is secured in position by suitable means such as the ring 3. The lens 2 is formed with a thin circular protruding section 4 adjacentthe bottom thereof, said section comprising the tail light lens as will be further described. The remainder of the lens 2, excluding the section 4, is quite heavy in cross section, the purpose of which will be further described. A bulb 5 of a standard and well known make is mounted in the casing 1 adjacent the bottom thereof and is mounted in a socket 6. The bulb 5 is provided with a low amperage filament 7 and a high amperage fila- 3 ment 8, which filaments are placed comparatively close together and the filament 7 is controlled by the usual light switch 9, while the filament 8 is controlled by the brake switch 10.
Both filaments 7, 8 are grounded on the casing as shown at 11; The usual battery 12 supplies current to the filaments 7, 8. In operationthe filament 7 is lit by operation of the switch 9 and burns constantly, emitting a rather feeble light just sufiicient to illuminate the tail light section 4. The remainder .of the lens 2 being heavier, is not appreciably illuminated by the dim light and will not be apprehended by the driver a considerable distance in the rear. The word Stop may beformed on the heavier portion of the lens 2 1927. Serial No. 178,921.
and as previously stated the word will not filament 8, a very bright light is emitted thereby, due to'the high amperage passing therethrough and the entire light lens 2 is then brightly illuminated showing the word Stop and causing a bright red flare indicating that the driver is going to stop. The filament 8 emits the same quantity of light that the usual headlight emits so that the entire compartment is brightly lighted and therefore the heavier section of the lens 2 may be corrugated, thus further serving to disperse the feeble rays of the filament 7 however, I may make the light lens 2 plain and if found desirable I may eliminate the word Stop, thus merely causing a red flare when the filament 8 is aglow. The bright light of the filament 8 is reflected from the inside of the casing to light up the entire lens. The bulb 5 extends into the protruding section 4, such that the rear line of the lens 2 is back of the filament 7, or substantially so. Thus when the dim filament 7 is lit the thin section is illuminated 5 and the rays from the dim filament will not be transmitted upwardly to illuminate the heavier section of the lens 2. The bright filament 8 will readily illuminate the entire casing 1 to such an extent that a bright red flare is obtained as previously described.
Having described my invention, I claim:
Y 1. A combination stop and tail light comprising a single compartment casing, a lens secured over the rear open face of said casing, said lens having a thin section adjacent the bottom thereof, said section serving as the tail light lens, a two filament bulb in said casing adjacent the bottom thereof, one of the said filaments emitting a feeble light and the other filament emitting a bright light, the remainder of said lens being of sufiicient thickness so that the feeble light will not i1- luminate the same but said thick section being brightly illuminated when the second filament is lit, said thick section having a stop, insignia thereon.
2. A combination stop and tail light comprising a single compartment casing, a lens secured over the rear open face of said casing,
said lens comprisin a protruding section of thin cross section a "jacentthe bottom there- I of, said section serving as the tail light lens, a two filament bulb in said casing extending igartlfy into said protruding section, one of the laments emitting a feeble light and the other filament emitting a bright light, the remainder of said lens being of sufficient cross section so that the feeble li ht will not i1- luminate the same but will be rightly lighted y when the second filament is lit. k
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM CARL DORMAN.
