OE ONE-HALF TO A marbefernied- MARX@see-La or san4 F l i romane y i -lllil,roaten filed- January 23 invention rela/testo i improvements in teleline', tables wherein side and e beek er .central portions are hingedly connected to fornire table when opened and a box for carf rying or storing certain articles when closed,
The primary object ofthe present inventionyis to. providey a new and improved article oftinanuiiacture comprising a folding table. Another'objectlisto provide a new and iin Pre-ved artiele ef mauufaetui-"e e'einpreine' e folding tableeeneeties Qta bex Provided f -Wfltwe Side 'Sections and e Central eeetiea which Whenextenelednte a eemmenfeaue, Wilt ferm e table in eelijufeten with lese hieedlv yeenlleeted Wilt-hin the eereere efgthe side. sections.
further object isto provideV a new improved' teleline table which may be elfeeeel .toeij'orin afbox Within which certain articles InayY be stored orv'carried'.
kkstill"further object vibs to provide a new rarticle ofrnanufacture consistingof a folding table-formed from a box withinwhich, when closed,y are stored'thelegs and other supportille etireetiue for the table aswell ee eert-e111' :other 4"articles forstoragefor transportation purposes. y y i I i *Y ,i n
Astil'lr'further object is to provide a 'newand improved article of manufacture coin prisingr a `folding table closed to form a box havingy the appearance of a suit-case, so that Va neat and pleasing exterior may be imparted to the table when closed. t K The invention consists in the particular details and arrangement of the parts as disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present .application wherein like characters of referenceare used to designate similar parts throughout the specification and draw- Fig.k 1 is an end elevation of myl improved f Y f oldingtable,` Whenclosed to forni a box or y rsuit-case;
tion;
F ig. 4tk is a plane view of the box extended to' forni a table top With the legs in folded or closed position; and
Fig. 5 is a bottoni plan view of the protective member for attachment to the box, when closed7 to protect the central member against Wear. y l Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designatea pair of side sections having the usual anges 2 to be found ydepending from the under surface cfa standard deal table top. f
The side sections 1 are' hingedly connected toa back or central portion 3 provided with flanges 28 hingedly connected thereto and arranged to be moved into engagement and aligninent'with the end ofthe ll-Dges 2 of the sections 1 whenv said side sections, 1 and 3 are moved or extended into aV coinilnon plane to form a tabletop, as disclosed in the upper central yportion of.k l, ot" the drawings.y
Suitable braces 6 are pijvotally connected to yeyelets 7 in the inside ofeach side section 1 and arranged to engage siinil'ar eyelets 5 on the opposite section l as difsclodsed the upper portion of Fig. i of the d ravvings..
Suitable legs 91ste lii'ngedlyy connected 1,39 the inneicorners of' the sections 1 and' when extended to forni supports for the table, legs9 are rigidly held within said; cornersby nieansozt struts 11,. the ends ofjwhichvstrutsj'lgl* engage the adjacent surfaces or sides of each pair ef lese enel-'rigidly held' Said.' lese., @sei-net theinner corners o'f the side section, as fully disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings,
In order to retain engaging relation of the ends of the struts' llwithlth'e legs 9 have provided 'each 'end of saidfstruts' with bolts 12 which engage eyelets 14, eye-l lets 14:y are preferably formeel integral' the hingesk 16 byl means of'A which hinges 1Q the Alegs 9 are. connected tothe side sections 1 of the table. A n In order 'to further support said legsy 9 lj have provided blocks` "which are and permanently secured 'upon v theminner sides of the; depending flanges 42 so as to hforni a slight recess between Said. blOCkS l'lvla' we l the adjacent corner of said flange 2, as disclosed in Fig. l of the drawings.
In order to hold the 'struts conveniently in position when disengaged vfrom the legs I have provided battens 18 rigidly secured in pairsupon the inside of eachside. section V1 and spaced to receivebetween each pair, oneV of the struts A11, one of each pair of. battens 18 being provided with a suitable latch 19 to retain the strut 11 within the space between its respective pairy of battens 18when the table is to be folded; n
The side sections 1 and central or back section 3 are hingedly connected upen their inner surfaces by means of -suitable hingesl 21 so that when said sections 1 and 3 arefolded or closed together to form a box or suit-case as disclosed in Fig, 1 of the drawings, an outer right-angled recess is formed at the junctions ofthe side sections with the central or back section 8, and in order to protect the surface ofthe central section 3v from undue wear, as it then becomes the bottoni of the box, when folded, I have-providedthe bottomor lchannel member 22'whose flanges enter said right-angled recesses and thereby provide a more finished appearance to the bfoiswlien closed, and at the saine time said channel member 22 provides a coverV for the bottom central section 3 tov protect the same from undue wear, as would otherwise occur when the closeClboX -is set upon the ground.
` Suitable'latches 26 and aY handle 27 are provided to further impart the appearance of a closed box or suit-case and also to lteepthe box closed during storage yor transportation.
'Ihecentral section 3 isalso provided with VHanges 28 hingedlyy connected thereto, which flanges 28 are arranged to be moved into alignment with lthe depending` flanges 2 of the side'sections 1' whereby sai/d flange may be continued entirely around thel table top when extended and in kuse as a table. IVhen the table is to be closed or` foldedthese flanges 28 are folded upon their hinges, back onto the` inner surface ofthe back or central section 3, as disclosed in Fig. 2 andthe lower central portion of Fig. l of the drawings, thereby permitting the sidey sections 1to be closed together when folding. ,f i 1In operation, when the vtable is closed to The legs 9 are then moved upwardly into their respective corners and the'struts 11 'are removed from between their respective battens 18 and placed between the legs 9 as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the bolts l2 are moved to engage the eyelets 14 on the .legs 9 to rigidly secure said struts in position.
- The table will now be extended but will be .Y i Y l up-side-down and it is only necessary to` reverse itsposition to4 place it in operative position as a table. l
In folding thetable the above operation is reversed, the battens 11 are removed from between the legs 9, folded into their respective side sections 1,7the struts 11 are placed be tween their respective battens 18 and secu-red `therein by turning the latches 19, the "side sections 1 are moved upon. their respective hinges 21, after the hinged flanges 28 are first moved out of the way, and the two side Vsecf tions 1 are then closed together to forma `suit-case orbox, and secured in suchclosed" Y position by the latches 26.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is i In a new article of manufacture, afolding table comprising. a box consisting of two side sections hingedly connectedv to a back and Y central section said side and central sections ff:
being extendable into `a lcommon plane Vto form a table top when said box is opened; means for locking said sections in said extended position; legs hingedly mounted within the inner corners of said side sections; means for loclnngsaid legs in such extended position; means for lockingthe box in a closed position; and a channel member secured to thev `bottom o-f the central section when ythe table is folded, to prevent injury to the surface of said central section.
v.In witness whereofI hereunto setfmy slig i JoHN B. rLoooHiNi nature; I
disclosed. in the kupper portion ofs'aid ligure,
after the flanges 28 have been moved into alignment with the flanges 2 vof the side secv
