This invention relates to an improved clamp utilized in the last-named embodiment horseshoe and retaining means therefor, and has more particular reference to that species wherein the horseshoe is held firmly, but detachably, upon the hoof without utilizing nails.

As is intimated in the above, I am well aware of the fact that itis not broadly new in this art to employ a horseshoe and to provide means for cooperation with the horses hoof for adequately holding the shoe in place. It follows, therefore, that my principal aim is` to generally improve upon the structures of this class by providing one which is distinguishedby the presence of a different type of shoe, and a novel retaining device associated therewith. Y

An outstanding feature andl advantage is predicated upon the utilization of a pair of practical adjustable heel clamps, and a shoe whose end portions are constructed to intimately cooperate with these clamps.

An equally important and contrastingly new construction is embodied in the hoofengaging retaining means which'is characterized principally byy a flexible and adjustable shackle.

Other minor details will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.

Attention is first invited to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive. Tn these figures the reference character 9 designates generally the complete 55 shoe which, as is shown, is of customary con figuration and provided with detachable calks 10 at the front and rear. At the center of the front is an upstanding abutment 11 shaped to correspond to a complemental 60' portion of the hoof,l and this is provided at its top with a hook 12. On opposite sides of the abutment 11 are shorter abutments 13.

These three abutments constitute stops against which the fore portion of the hoof is placed.

vFormed integral with the end portions at the rear of the shoe and'disposed opposite each other are inwardly and radially eX- tending lugs 14 disposed in a horizontal 70' plane. As detailed in Fig. 3 each lug'is formed in itstop and bottom with recesses. By thus casting the lugs, I provide a central web 15 which' is in turn provided with an elongated slot 16. A 75 It is with these lugs that the heel clamp 17 cooperates. Each clamp is the same in con-y struction. As shown in Fig-4 the clamp comprises anupright portion 1S of the con#V Y figuration shown terminating in a curved extremity 19 constituting alip engaging behind the hoof. This portion 18 carries a hook 20 and a centrally disposed horizontally arranged screw-threaded eye 21. This eye ris of a depth corresponding to the upper recess in the lug 14 and tits in the lug as shown in Fig. 3.l Cooperating therewith is a'retain`- ing screw 22 which extends through the slot as shown and serves to adjustably attach the clamp to the shoe.

`The aforesaid shackle is generally desig-v nated by reference numeral 23 and is composed of a plurality of cooperating parts organized in the manner` shown to provide the desired binding' force upon the hoof.` 95 For instance as detailed in 2, this shackle includes a two-part turnbuckle device' whichl is centrally arranged to engage the crown portion of the hoof. This turnbu'ckle device includes a pair of screwinvention shown 1n threaded coupling members 24 attached to each other by a link 25 and attached to small chainlets 26 through the medium of the right-angularly shaped brackets 27 and connecting bolt 28. Thus the desired flexibility is secured. The chainlets are connected with the hooks 20, on the aforesaid clamps 17. Moreover, a supplemental chainlet 29 is provided, this belng connected with the link 25 and with the first-mentioned hook the embodiment of the Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive,vit will be observed that the shoe is generally indicated at 30and that it isprovided wit Y center of .on opposite an opstanding integral abutment 314 at' the the crown portion which termi.- nates in an oblique apertured ear 32 in order to accommodate an adjusting bolt 33.v Then sides of this abutment are the short complemental abutments 34. Moreover there are the aa horizontal recessed lugs 36. Here againthe usual calks 35 and the special web portions of the lugs areformed with slots 37 as detailed in Fig, These lugs serve to accommodate the du `licate clamping devices 38. The clamping evice colnpriahes an upstanding portion 39 having a chain hole 40, a central horizontal screw eye 41YV and a laterally directed lipy or extension i2. As in the other form of the invention, 1 also utilize small retaining screws 43 for adinet ably connecting the clampswith the ugs. It is toibe noted. in connection with these clamps that they are adjustable radially and also have a pivotal lmotion and this `double actionv permits accurate adjustment.,

- The shackle 1s designated by the reference character 44 and comprises chainlets 45 connected with the clampsS through the me.- dium of the chainlet openings 40. The ope posite end links of the chainlets are engaged with hooks 46 on the rightangllar brackets r47 which are fastenedvby bolts 48 to the curved coupling member 49 of the smgle turnbuckle structure. This,l turnbuckle is generally designated by the reference Gharacter 50. It is to be noted however that itis formed with a central vertical screwthreaded hole to accommodate the stem o f the aforesaid bolt 33. In thisway the cen-V tral portion of the shackle can be adjusted up or down to obtain a more secure blndmg action and to guard against accidental displacement in Vcase the shackle is struck against an obstruction.

A careful Vanalysis of the description in conjunction with the drawings will reveal improvements and contributions to the art cooperating 1n producni an economical and practicable device whic will undoubtedly fulfil the requirements of an invention of this class. Persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will obtain a clear understanding of the invention and its prominent distinctions. Consequently a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.v Y
