This invention relates to cigar lighters, andpertalns more particularly to a c1 ar lighter which 1s designed for table or smo ing stand use, as dlstinguished from the pocket carried '5 variety.
The prima object of the invention is to PI'OVIdG a lig ter whether ofthe'table or pocket variety in which they light is produced b the mere release of a catch and more partic arly to provide a tensioned' spark produces a spark and producing and snufIing means which upon release from a holding catch automatically moves the snuife'r'to inoperative position, and one in which the said means can be restored to-normal position by mere movement with the catch.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invenof same into engagement tion;
Y 7 latter extend plan view; ottom plane view of the wheel carrier in detached Figure 2 is a to Figure 3 is a snufier and "park position;
Figure 4 is a section on line 4'-4 of Figure Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 4 an Figure 6 is a bottom plan view, while Figure 7 is a detail perspective view of the spring.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a tubular casing 1 is employed which has atop 2 and abottom 3, the latter preferably being soldered at 4 to the casing. A table or surface engaging base 5 is formed integral with the-casing 1 and is designed to en port the structure in vertical position on a to. le or smoking stand or other surface. The base and the casing, with its top 2 may be drawn from a tube in one piece and thereafter the bottom soldered in position. The top 2.is formed with an aperture to receive a tu e which'supports one end of the wick 7.
A threaded 8 is carried by the bottom3 cap A tube 8 has reduced ends 9 and 10 whic 0 therefor in. the bottom? and top 2 respectively, and is soldered in position as indithe catch holding the member 20 vthrough apertures provided cated at 11 and 12 in the drawings. A coil spring 13 in the tube 8 tensions the flintrod 4 and is supported by a screw 15 threaded in the lower end of the tube 8. -The upper end of the tube 8 is bifurcated to provide journals 16 for the rounded ends of a pin 17. The pin 17 has a squared central portion 18 to engage in a squared opening provided therefor in a spark wheel 19, so that the pin and sparkwheel will move in unison. A member 2O havin a closure knob2l is provided with a rigid epending snufler member 2,2 to receive the end of the Wick therein. The member 20 is formed with depending "ears 21 which are perforated to receive the ends of the pin, the latter. having its ends 22 riveted or otherwise keyedto the ears 2 l so that the sin will move in unison with the member. A shaped spring 23 is provided which has Y its closed part 24 engaged with the top 2 and has intermediate portions coiled at 25 about the ends of the pin, the free ends 26 of the spring being engaged with the under face of the member 20, whereby it will be seen that the member 20 is constantly under tension tending to force same outwardl%to the dotted line position of Figure 4. he free end'of the member 20 is formed with a lip 27 which is formed toengage in the opening 28 of a catch having a spring 29 secured at 30 to a cap. member 31, the latter member having a slot 32 hits top to receive the member 20 as shown in Figure 2. A finger engaging member or button .33 is connected to the spring catch. As shown 1n F l gure 1 an vents or openings 34am formedin the-cap member 31, preferably on one side thereof adjacent the wick so as toprovide the necessar air to maintain combustion.
, 1h operation, it will be seen that normally the parts are in the position of Figure 4,'w1th closed. By depressing the button 33, the catch 27 will be released and the member 20 under the tension of the sprin 23 will move to the dotted line position of igure 4, causing the spark wheel to enga e the flint rod 14 and roduce a spark, which latter ignites the wic since the snufier 22 has been raised up from'the wick automatically with the outward movement of the member 20. To restore the parts to the position of Figure 1, it is merely necessary to press downwardly on'the knob 21 which causes same to be automatically engaged with the catch and hold the member 20 in position as shown in Figure 4.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a lighter construction, a fuel reservoir, a wick extending therefrom, ignition means carried by the reservoir including a pyrophoric tube, and a spark wheel associated therewith. a cap on said reservoir enclosing said ignition means andhaving a top wall with a slot therein, a closure member for said slot, bearing means for pivotally mounting the closure member within the cap and below the said top wall, said closure member being operatively connected to said spark wheel.
2. In a lighter construction, a fuel reservoir, a wick extending therefrom, ignition means mounted on said reservoir, said ignition means including a pyrophoric tube, a
2'5 friction wheel mounted thereon, a cap on said reservoir having a top wall with an opening therein, a closure member for said opening, depending ears on said closure member extending a substantial distance below said top wall, bearing means below said top wall for pivotally mounting said ears, said closure member bein operatively connected to said friction whee 3. In a lighter construction a fuel reser- 85 voir, a wick extending thereirom, a pyrohoric holder on said reservoir, a cap enclosmg said wick and removabl frictionally retained on said reservoir and 'aving a top wal with an openin therein, a closure member for 40 said opening, epending ears on said closure member, a frlction wheel, a shaft rotatably mounted in said holder and keyed to said friction wheel and depending ears, resilient means on said shaft tending to move said closure member to open position and operate said wheel to ignite sai wick, and manually releasable means for holding said closure member in position to close said opening.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
