PRINTING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,418, dated J' une 2, 1857'.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JASON L. BURDICK, of
i New York, in the county and Sta-te of New York, have invented a new and Improved Printing-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents a longitudinal section of the press showing the type roller drawn quite back. Fig. II is a side elevation and Fig. III is a longitudinal section showing the type cylinder drawn back half way.

A is a roller having a straight surface (2J) to receive the type. This roller receives a forward and backward motion through the connecting rods O, connected with the crank shaft S, which latter is either moved by hand through the lever L or by any other mechanical power. This roller A is guided in suitable slides Q, on the main frame B and is capable of turning with its axle while moving backward and forward.
D, D', are arms attached to'the connect ing rods C, on each end of the type roller A, and receive only a very slight motion, subject to the'vibrating motion of the connecting rods. The lower arms D carry the inking roller, J, which is made to press always against the circumference of the type roller A, and the upper arms D support and guide the distributing rollers R in such a manner as to allow the same to adjust themselves always by their own weight to the surface of the roller A or to the type attached to the straight surface, p.
H is a small rack attached on the outside of the machine to the frame B and into which the pinion P, fast on the end of the axle, O, of the roller A works. Gr, is a guide piece fastened likewise on the outside of the frame B and so constructed that as soon as the pinion P leaves the stationary rack H, a long projecting tooth (m) on said pinion P, enters said. guide piece G, and is then thereby moved and guided in any desired direction.
During the backward motion of the roller A the teeth of the pinion P come into the stationary rack H, in consequence of which a rotating motion is communicated to the type roller A at the same time said roller is moved backward, during which time the inking roller J will distribute the ink all over the surface of the roller A. Then the type roller A is moved again forward, the same receives through this pinion P, in connection with the stationary rack H a reverse rotating motion, when the distributing rollers R take up the ink from the circumference of the roller A and distribute the same over the types, whilethe same move under said rollers R. The pinion P through which, as above described, the rotating motion has been communicated to the type roller A, leaves the stationary rack H, as soon as .the types, attached to said roller A, have passed from under the distributing rollers R and before the forward motion of the type roller A is completed. The projecting tooth, m, comes then into the guide piece, G, by which this pinion and consequently the type roller A is brought into the required position and is thereby guided in that position during the completion of its forward motion, so that the type will come perfectly square against the paper or card on the platen T.
The platen T is attached to the frame B by means of a bolt (n) and capable of turning around t-he same. The lower end of said platen T is connected by rods 'v and w with the lower arm D in consequence of which a motion is communicated to said platen, during the backward motion of the type roller A, so as to facilitate the taking out `of the printed paper or card and to replace a new one, while during the forward motion of said roller A, the platen T is brought back again into its original position, so as to offer a square surface to the type on the roller A. The position of the bolt (n) is exactly in aline with the center of the type roller A and the line of motion of said roller, and whereas this type roller A is guided by the guide piece G during the latter part of its forward motion, so as to move in astraight line any slight deviation of the platen T will easily adjust itself.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of working t-he roller A, upon which the type is attached, in such a manner as to communicate to the same a forward and backward motion in connection against the platen T containing the paper with a rotating motion substantially as deor card to be printed.
