According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the top portion of a card 4 and also the top intermediate portion of a supplemental holder 2 are removably held in position by a retainer which, as seen in Figure 1, is in the form of a button or tab 9 of celluloid or like transparent material which may be fastened by staples 11 to the upper part of the front of the main holdei` 7. The retainer 9 is adapted to overlap the adjacent portions of the card 4 and the supplemental holder 2, as seen in Figures 1 and 2, to thereby securely but removably retain such members flat and in proper position on the main holder 7. An open mouthed slot 12 is preferably provided in the supplemental holder 2 adjacent the retain-er 9 to enable the top edge of the holder 2 to extend upwardly beyond the staples 11.

Alternatively, the upper corners of the card 4 projecting above the upper edge of a supplemental holder 2 may be retained Within the diagonal slits 7u of the main or rear holder 7 in the usual manner, in which case, additional diagonal slits (not shown) may be formed in lower positions on the main holder 7 in order to receive the upper corners of the reduced supplemental card holder.

In a further embodiment of the invention i as seen in Figure 4, the top of the card 4 may be retained in position by one or more integral tongues 16 cut from the upper part of the supplemental holder 2 and adapted to overlap the upper part of the card.

According to another modification illustrated in Figure 5, the retainer may take the form of an elongated strip 9b of Celluloid or other suitable material which may be stapled l as at 1lb to the upper portion of the main holder 7 beneath the hinging crease or fold b thereof. A supplemental holder 2' is retained to the main holder 7 by the upper edge portion of the holder 2 being inserted between said strip 9 and the holder 7. The upper edge portion of a card 4 may also be entered between the strip 9b and the holder 7 if desired, but the card may be retained in position by being overlapped by a nose or project- A ing portion 9c of said strip, this nose 9C facilitating the application of the supplemental holder to the main holder, and the card 4 to the supplemental holder.

According to a further modiication, an elongated strip 9b of Celluloid or other suitable material may be stapled as at 1lc (Figure 6) to the upper edge of a supplementary holder 2. 1n this instance, the upper corners of the holder 2 may be inserted in the usual diagonal slits 7ZL in the main or rear holder 7 and the strip 9b may have two noses or portions, one projecting upwardly, 9C and the other downwardly, 9d. The upwardly projecting nose 9c is inserted in a slit 7b in the rear holder 7, whilst the downwardly projecting nose 9d facilitates the insertion of a card 4 into the supplemental holder 2.

Vith any of the foregoing arrangements a colored or other suitable signal tab 17, shown in Figure 3, may be readily lit-ted in the desired position between the front of the upturned portion 3 of the supplemental card holder 2 and the transparent strip 6 at the lower edge of the rear holder 7, so that the tab 17 does not come into contact with the card. The result is that the signal tab is securely but removably held in place and is in no way affected by the removal and replacement of t-he card. The liability of inadvertently displacing the signal tab, as previously mentioned, is thus overcome in a simple and effective manner.

Where the holders 7 are provided with corner pockets, it will be evident that the corner portions of the supplemental holders 2 etc. may be inserted therein, and suitable signal tabs may be placed over the upturned indexbearing portions 3 of the supplemental holders.

The aforesaid upturned lower portion 3 of each supplemental card holder 2 etc. may be provided with an aperture 18 (asin Figure 4) immediately behind which the face of the holder 2 may be colored or otherwise treated as at 19 in order to render it prominently visible. This colored or like portion is normally obscured by the card 4 which shows through said aperture 18 when the card is in position. When, however, the card is removed from the supplemental holder, the colored or like portion 19 of the latter is seen throrgh the aperture and forms a distinctly visib e indication that the card is missing from the holder.

In order to provide a visible index for the cards when the main holders 7 are swung upwardly and rearwardly within a drawer, each main holder may be shaped or cut away adjacent its lower edge to thereby leave a recess 7 C (Figures 1 and 2) which extends practically for the entire width of the holder. At the ends of this recess the holder may have nose portions 8 through which staples 10 orthe like are passed for fastening the transparent strip 6 to the holder. The presence of this recess 7"3 enables the strip to be made a very close lit upon the corner portions of the hold- CTI cr without impeding insertion and withdrawal of the supplemental holder 2. It will also be evident that the back face of the lower folded portion 3 of a supplemental holder may be readily viewed through said gap 7 and the transparent strip G when the holder 7 is swung rearwardly.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is zl. In a visible index card-tiling device, the combination of a main holder adapted for retention within a filing drawer and provided at its lower edge with a pocket, a supplemental card holder adapted at its lower edge to be entered into said pocket of the main holder, and means for detachably retaining said supplemental holder at its upper edge to said main holder and for detachably retaining a card at its upper edge to said supplemental holder.

2. In a visible index card-iiling device, the combination of a main holder adapted for retention within a filing drawer and provided at its lower edge with a substantially U-shaped transparent strip, a supplemental card holder having a lower edge index-bearing portion adapted to be inserted within said U-shaped strip, and a retainer adapted to retain said supplemental holder at its upper edge to said main holder and to overlap and retain a card at its upper edge to said supplemental holder.

. combination of a main holder adapted for retention within a iiling drawer and provided at its lower edge with a transversely extending strip of transparent material forming a pocket, a supplemental card holder having at its lower edge a turned-back portion and adapted to be inserted within said pocket, said turned-back portion serving to accommodate the lower edge portion of a card,

and means for detachably retaining said suppleinental holder and said card to said main holder.

In a visible index card-ling device, the combination of main holder adapted for retention within a filing drawer and provided at its lower edge with a pocket, a supplemental card holder provided at its lower edge with a turned-back portion and adapted to be inserted within said pocket, said turnedbaclr portion serving to accommodate the t lower edge portion of a card, and a retainer cooperating with the upper edge of said supplemental holder for retaining the latter to said main holder and for overlapping and holding the upper edge of a card in said supplemental holder.

5. In a visible index card filing device, the combination of a main holder adapted for retention in a filing drawer, a transparent pocket at the lower edge of said holder, a supplemental. card holder having its lower edge portion turned back upon itself and adapted for insertion within said pocket, and a retainer secured to said main holder and adapted to overlap the upper edges of said supplemental holder and a card thereon.

6. In a visible index card tiling device, the combination of a main holder adapted for retention in a tiling drawer, a transparent strip secured to the lower edge of said holder so as to provide a pocket, a supplemental card holder provided at its lower edge with a turnedbaclr portion and adapted for insertion within said pocket, said turned-back portion serving to accommodate the lower edge of a card, and a retainer cooperating with said supplemental holder and adapt-ed to retain the latter and a. card thereon to said main holder.

7. In a visible index card filing device, the combination of a main holder with means for retaining it within a filing drawer, said holder being provided at its lower edge with a pocket, a supplemental card holder provided at its lower edge with al transversely extending turned-back flap and adapted to be inserted within said pocket, and a retainer adapted to overlap and detachably retain the upper part of said supplemental holder and the upper part of a card thereon, to said main holder.

8. In a visible index card filing device, the combination of a main holder with means for retaining it in a tiling drawer so that it may be swung upwardly and rearwardly about a transverse axis adjacent its upper edge, said holder being provided in its lower edge with a transversely elongated recess formed by a substantially U-shaped strip of transparent material attached to the lower edge of said main holder, a supplemental card holder adapted at its lower edge to be inserted within said transparent strip, and a retainer cooperating with the upper edge of said supplemental holder adapted to overlap and retain the latter and a card thereon to said main holder.

9. In a card filing device, the combination of a main holder with means for retaining it in a filing drawer so that it may be swung upwardly and rearwardly about a transverse axis adjacent its upper edge, said main holder being provided in its lower edge with a transversely elongated recess, formed by a substantially U-shaped strip of transparent material secured to the lower edge of said main holder, a supplemental card holder provided at its lower edge with a turned-back portion and adapted to be inserted in said transparent strip, and a retainer applied to said main holder and adapted to overlap the upper edge of saidn supplemental holder and the upper edge of a card thereon.
