Tliisinvention relates to wall bed mountings and in particular to the type of vertically pivoted wall bed disclosed in my copending application for patent filed July 18, 1927 under Serial No. 206, entitled wall bed.
The objects of the present invention are to effect improvements over the. disclosure in said copending application, whereby a better construction and action of the bed is secured in swinging the same upon its vertical pivots.
In the drawings hereto Fig. 1 is a sectional plan view of my vertically pivoted bed as seen from the line 1-1 of Fig. 3 and showing the bed at one side of a wall presumably in a closet and w'th the door closing the doorway. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1 but show ing the bed swung to the other or room side of the wall and with the door again closing the doorway.

lefore describing the drawings in detail attention is called to the fact that since the invention has a direct relation to the wall bed disclosed in my copendin application aforesaid, the same numerals are used herein to desig ate the same or equivalent parts of the structure shown in the other case so that comparison will be easier.
In the drawings1 designates the wall of a room, 2 the closet side of the wall, 3 the room side of the wall, at the doorway or wall opening leading to the closet, and 5 the door for closing the doorway.
The bed structure is supposed to be the common type of wall bed which folds to vertical position when not in use and lowers to horizontal extension for use and since only its mounting for swinging from one side of the wall to the other when in vertically folded position is involved in this invention only such parts of the bed frame as contribute to the invention are shown. These parts comprise a vertical head-frame 6 having an upper horizontal run 6, a lower transverse connecting angle iron 7, and a pair of brackets 8 to which the vertically folding portion of the bed (not shown) is usually pivoted at 9.
The pivotal mounting of the bed frame for swinging from one side of the wall to the other comprises a vertical bar 10 to opposite ends of which are respectively secured brackets 1112 having short horizontal arms iii-14 respectively extending below and above the door 5 and vertically pivoted respectively to the floor and head lintel of the doorway at 1516 through suitable bearing plates as indicated at 1718 secured to the building.
The vertical bar 10 is rigidly clamped at 19 to the upper run of the bed frame, and the lower member 7 of the frame preferably rests upon an extension 20 of bracket 11 and is firmly bolted thereto, all so that the bedframe swings as a unit with the vertical bar 10 on the vertical axis passing through the pivots 1516.
The door 5 floats between arms 13 and l t and is supported on the bed frame by means of a bracket 21, 21 firmly secured to the lower rear face of the door and which bracket carries flanged rollers 22 rolling upon the upper edge of the angle-iron 7 so that the door is freely movable in a lateral direction on the head frame of the bed. The upper end of the door is held in vertical alignment by a grooved roller 2% carried by the bracket 12 and rollable along a track 23 secured to and extending across the inner face of the door, as best shown in Fig. i. This roller 24 is free to move up and down on its bearing pin so that any relative settling or displacement of the track, door or other members will not cause it' to bind as the roller is free to assume the correct position.
The upper pivot 16 of the bed is formed by providing a round upwardly projecting boss on the upper bracket 14 and which boss seats in and is revolvable in a hole formed in the upper lintel plate 18.
To prevent the rollers 22 from jumping the track angle 7, I provide a guard angle to angle iron 25 so as to form'an enclosure in which the rollers 22 operate.
With the structure as described it is manifest that the door is free to be rolled back and forth across the bed, andsince the vertical axis upon which the bed frame swings is close to one jamb of the doorway so that .one edge (A) of the bed overhangs or extends along the wall beyond this jamb of the doorway when the bed is in the closet, and the opposite edge (B) of the bed overhangs the wall beyond this same jamb of the doorway when the bed is swung out into the room, it follows that the door would always require sliding on the bed away from the overhanging portion in order to fit within the doorway.
To thus'slide or roll the door back and forth on the bed structure (and which words bed structure include everything carried positively by the brackets 1112) a leverage system may be used as shown in my copending application aforesaid, and wherein a lever or arm 26 was pivoted at one end at a fixed point to the floor under the door and at the other end to a point on the door structure so that as the bed was swung on its pivots from one side of the wall through the doorway to the other side of the wall, the door was automatically pulled or pushed by the arm 26 and rolled along the track across the bed so as to fall directly into place within the door opening when the bed was at either end of its travel either in the room or in the closet.
The present invention also uses the arm 26 adjacent the floor and it is pivoted at one end at 28 to a portion of the door structure, but the other end is not pivoted to a fixed point 011 the floor but pivots at 27 to a groove 31 in a fixed floor plate 32 so that the end of the lever is free to slide back and forth in this groove and thus provide a shiftable fulcrum point for the door shifting arm 26. Also pivoted to the slidable end of arm 26 and slidable with it is a link or lever 33 which is pivoted at its other end at 34 to a plate 35 secured to the bottom of lower bracket 11, thus the pivotal point 34 is on a short arm extending from the pivot 15 carried around with the bed structure in revolvin the same from one side of the wall to the 05161.
The length of this short arm or rather the throw of pivotal point 34 with respect to pivot point 15 may be'varied by means of a screw 36 extending from the bracket to the outer end of the plate and arranged for adjusting the plate in or out, the inner end of the plate being held by screws 37 passing through slots 38 in the plate so as to permit of the adjustment.
Lever 33 is adjustable for length by means of a sliding joint at 39 secured by screws 40 passing through a straddling channel piece 41.
With the arrangement described the rolling movement of the door upon the bed structure is modified over the previous disclosure, as the lever 33 being carried around by the bed structure forcibly slides the fulcrum of arm 26 in the slotted fioor plate and thereby first slides or rolls the door slightly away from the door j amb nearest the pivots 15-16 and as soon as it is cleared the door reverses its rolling action and moves to the opposite ends of the tracks so that itwill close into the doorway when the bed is at the opposite end of its pivotal movement.
The adjustment of the throw of pivot 3e and of the length of lever 33 provide for varying the action to suit different clearances desired in various installations.
Thus, through means of an arm mounted on a shiftable fulcrum operated by swinging of the bed or door, I am enabled to clear a thicker jamb without undue clearance be tween the edges of the door and the jamb in spite of the closeness of the bed structure pivots 1516 to one jamb of the doorway, and while I show one specific way of accomplishing the result sought I do not wish to be confined to this as many variations may be made in leverage systems to obtain similar results or the pivotal points of the arrangement shown, especially pivot 34 may be advanced or retarded with respect to the position shown to hasten, delay or almost nullify the door sliding movement at the first swing-- ing movement of the bed, and I feel entitled to claim these broadly. I
I claim:
1. A wall bed, means by which the bed is vertically pivoted to swing through a doorway from one side of a wall to the other side, a door for said doorway, means by which the door is mounted so as to be reversible in said doorway and laterally movable with respect to the pivotal mounting of said bed upon swinging the bed, means, arranged and adapted for effecting such lateral movement of the door upon swinging the bed through the doorway and means for adjusting the amount of such lateral movement of the door for clearing the jamb.
2. A wall bed, means by which the bed is vertically pivoted to swing through a doorway from one side of a wall to the other side, a door for said doorway, means by which the door is mounted so as to be reversible in said doorway and laterally movable with respect to the pivotal mounting of said bed upon swinging the bed, means including cooperating levers arranged and adapted for efiecting such lateral movement of the door first in one direction and then in the opposite direction upon swinging the bed through the doorway, for clearing the jamb upon initial swinging movement of the bed.
3. A wall bed, means by which the bed is vertically pivotally mounted to swing through a doorway narrower than the bed from one side of a wall to the other side, a door in said doorway, means by which the door is mounted for reversing in said doorway to close the doorway with either face outward, means whereby said door is arranged for lateral movement with respect to the bed mounting upon reversal of the door, and means including cooperating levers operated upon swinging the bed arranged and adapted for moving the door laterally first slightly in one direction to clear the jamb and then in the opposite direction to close the doorway in reversed position.
4. A wall bed, means by which the bed is mounted on vertical pivots to swing through a doorway from one side of a wall to the other side, the pivotal axis of the mounting being closer to one jamb of the doorway than to the other, a door for closing the doorway, means by which the door is arranged to swing with the bed mounting and be laterally movable with respect thereto, and means including cooperating levers operated upon swinging the bed arranged and adapted for first moving said door laterally in a direction away from the amb nearest said pivotal axis until the door clears said jamb and then in the opposite direction to align the door within the doorway when the bed is swung to extreme position.
5. A wall bed, means by which the bed is mounted on vertical pivots to swing through a doorway from one side of a wall to the other side, he pivotal axis of the mounting being closer to one jamb of the doorway than to the other, a door for closing the doorway, means by which the door is arranged to swing with the bed mounting and be laterally movable with respect thereto, and means including cooperating levers operated upon swinging the bed arranged and adapted for first moving said door laterally in a direction away from the jamb nearest said pivotal axis until the door clears said amb and then in the opposite direction to align the door within the doorway when the bed is swung to either extreme position.
6. A wall bed, means by which the bed is mounted on vertical pivots to swing through a doorway from one side of a wall to the other side, the pivotal axis of the mounting being closer to one amb of the doorway than to the other, a door for closing the doorway, means by which the door is arranged to swing the bed mounting and be laterally movable with respect thereto, an arm pivoted at one end to the door structure and at the other end to a movable fulcrum positioned on a fixed portion of the doorway, and a connection between said movable fulcrum and the bed mounting whereby upon swinging the bed on its mounting said fulcrum will be moved and said arm will shift the door upon the bed structure to reverse the door in said doorway.
7. In a structure as specified in claim 6, a slotted plate secured to the floor and in which plate said movable fulcrum is guided.
S. A. structure as specified in claim 6 said connection between said movable fulcrum and the bed mounting comprising a lever pivoted to the bed mounting at a point eccen tric to the swinging axis of the bed to provide a throw for moving the lever.
9. A structure as specified in claim 6 said connection between said movable fulcrum and the bed mounting comprising a lever pivoted to the bed mounting at a point eccentric to the swinging axis of the bed to provide throw for moving the lever, and means for varying the throw to vary the movement of the lever.
10. A structure as specified in claim 6 said connection between said movable fulcrum and the bed mounting comprising a lever pivoted to the bed mounting at a point eccentric to the swinging axis of the bed to provide a throw for moving the lever, means for vary ing the throw to vary the movement of the lever. and means for varying the length of said lever.
11. A wall bed structure mounting means whereby said bed structure is vertically pivotet at a point nearer one jamb of a doorway than the other jamb so as to swing the bed structure through the doorway from one side of the wall to the other, a track supported by and extendin horizontally across the bed structure, a door fitting the doorway provided with rollers supporting it on the track for lateral movement thereon relative to the bed structure, a track secured to and extending across the upper portion of one face of the door, and a roller carried by the mounting means engaging said last mentioned track for guiding the upper part of the door.

A wall bed structure mounting means whereby said bed structure is vertically pivoted at a point nearer one jamb of a doorway than the other jamb so as to swing the bed structure through the doorway from one side of the wall to the other, a track supported by and extending horizontally across the bed structure, a door fitting the doorway provided with rollers supporting it on the track for lateral movement thereon relative to the bed structure, a track secured to and extending across the upper portion of one face of the door, and a roller carried by the mounting means engaging said last mentioned track for guiding the upper part of the door, means provided whereby said roller is revolvably mounted and movable up and down to compensate for relative displacement of its track.
13. A wall bed structure mounting means whereby said bed structure is vertically pivoted at a point nearer one jamb of a doorway than the other jamb so as to swing the bed structure through the doorway from one side of the wall to the other, a pair of tracks supported by and extending across the bed structure, a door fitting the doorway provided with rollers rollable between said tracks, and a plate extending across the bed structure covering said rollers.
