CHARLES INMAN, OF HOPE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHINGLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 173.957, dated February 22, 1876; application file November 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES INMAN, of Hope, in the county of Midland and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shingles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact descliption .of the construction and operation of the same, referencebein g had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this spec ification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my shingle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of several of my shingles as laid. Fig: 3 is an edge view of my shingle.
This invention has relation to shingles 5 and it consists in constructing them with a regular taper from the thin end to about siX inches of the butt, then making a transverse shoulder about a sixteenth of an inch deep, and finishing the butt with its surfaces parallel and plane from the offset or shoulder out to the end.
The object of this invention is to protect the shingles against wet-rot by providing for a free circulation of air under their projecting ends, which are the portions most exposed to the weather.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the shingle, which may be sawed in the usual manner, tapering from the butt to the thin end. On one side is cut an oifsetor shoulder into the shingle on a transverse line, aboutsix inches from the butt, as indicated at a. From this shoulder the butt is finished out to the end with a surface which is plane and parallel with the other side of the shingle.
When shingles of this character are employed in roofing, their exposed portions or butts will lie open on account of the rabbets, and there will be a free circulation of air between the layers, which will quickly dry them out, thus effectually preventing wet-rot, pro moting the duration of the shingles and the tightness of the roof in the construction of which they have been used.
I am aware that a shingle has heretofore been formed with recesses, and a rib between them upon its under side, and I, therefore, lay no claim to such invention, which differs from mine in construction, is more expensive to make, and permits the alternate layers of shingles to be in contact with each other along the ribs made on them, thereby engendering wet-rot to some extent, while in my construction the butts of the shingles are not in contact with each other below the shoulders.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shingle herein described, having the tapering forin from its thin end to near the butt, the transverse shoulder and the rabbeted butt, finished from said shoulder with a plane side parallel with the other side of the shingle, as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES INMAN.
