This invention relates to awater-heating device and particularly to one in which a candle may be used for the heating element.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved water heater which is relatively simple in construction but which is efiicient in operation.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved water-heating devicewhich is constructed so that it may be used ust as effectively when the candle is pretty well burned as when the candle is of full length.

Other objects of the invention are to iniprove generally water heaters in various ways all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claim.

My improved device comprises a housing indicated generally at l and formed in three 5 sections, to wit, a base section 2, an intermediate section 3 and an upper water-holding section 4, the latter being provided with a receptacle or cup portion 5 to receive water or other liquid to be heated. The heating of the liquid is accomplished by the burning of a candle 6 which is located within the housing 1. This candle is shown as being supported by a candle holder 7 which is adapted to be received within the base section 2 of the housing.

supported thereby. The intermediate section 3 is separable from the base section 2 and the upper water-holding section a. Said intermediate section is in the form of a sleeve, the lower portion 8 of which telescopes over the upper end 9 of the base section 2. This upper end 9 is shown as being slightly reduced in diameter so as to fit within the lower end 8 of the intermediate section 3, said base section being formed with the shoulder 10 on which the intermediate section 3 is supported. Similarly, the upper end 11 of the intermediate section is somewhat reduced in diameter so that it will fit within the lower end of the upper section 4. The intermediate section 3 is provided with openings 12 and the upper end 9 of the base section which fits within the intermediate section is similarly provided with other openings 13. The openings 12 and 13 have the same relative position so that when the parts are assembled they will register with each other and thus suitable draught openings are provided for supplying air to support combustion of the candle. 5

The intermediate section 3 can be turned on the base section 1 so as to close the openings more or less thereby providing for admitting the correct amount of air to the interior of the housing to properly support combustion and prevent the candle from smoking.

The upper section 4 is provided at its upper end with vent openings let through which the products of combustion escape.

The side walls of the receptacle 5 are prefs5 erably tapered somewhat as shown and when the candle is in position and is lighted the hot gasesof combustion will strike against the bottom of the receptacle and will flow up around the inclined sides thereof thus effe'ctively heating any material in the receptacle.

The candle holder 7 is shown as having a depending tab 15 which extends through an opening in the bottom of the base section 2. Said tab is provided with an opening to receive a locking pin 16 that is situated beneath the bottom 17 of the base section 2. By this means the candle holder is firmly locked in position. The base member wil preferably be provided with a down-turned flange 18 on which the housing rests and which supports the bottom 17 sufficiently above the table or support so that the tab 15 will not engage therewith.

I have stated above that the intermediate section 3 is removable and when it has been removed the upper or water-holding.section 4 may be applied directly to the base section 2, as shown in Fig. 2, thus lowering the cup. hen the candle is full length the intermediate section 3 willbe used as shown in Fig. 1 but when the candle gets partially burned so that the flame 19 is so far removed from the bottom of the receptacle that-it does not readily heat the water or other liquid therein then the section 3 may be removed and the upper section 4- placed directly on the base section. The device can be. very inexpensively made and, furnishes an eflicient way of heating small quantities of water or other material. It is especiallyadvantageous for use in those locations where gas or other means of heating is not available.

While I haveillustrated a selected. embodiment of my invention I do not. wish to be limited to the constructional.features shown and various changes may be made in the details of the device without departing from the invention.

I claim:
