Description

Patented `Dec. 3, 1929 PATENT- OFFICE .ALFRED I. STOCXIAN, OF IBVINGTON, NEW JERSEY DISPLAY STAN Application led February 15, 1928. Seri-a1 No. 254,381.
This invention relates to display stands and more particularly vof the easel type.
The objects of the invention are topro vide a display stand which will readily lie tion, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referrin to the accompanying drawing,
in which l' e numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views;
Figure 1 is a` perspective view of my improved display stand in use;
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the same;
Figure 3 is a similar central vertical section showing a modified construction; and
Figure 4 is a face view of said modified construction showing the same laid out fiat.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates the body portion of the display stand which may be of suitable size and shapefor both mounting a package 2 which is to be displayed andwhich will furnish space for advertising the product and also a sucient amount of material so as to provide a proper degree of-strength of said body portion. If found desirable, wings 3, 3 may be provided at each side of said body portion which can be bent backwardly at an angle to the plane of the body portion for purpose of appearance, re-enforcenient Vand for increased advertising space. These wings may be properly shaped to meet all of these requirements, and may also be arranged to rest at their lower ends u on the same surfacewith the lower end o the. body ortion and at the same time permit the b y portion to tilt backwardly at a moderate angle.
The central part of the body portion is provided with an opening 4 of substantially the circumferential dimensions of the box or other article 2 which is to be displayed. In making the said opening 4, the material 5 forming the body portion is sheared on three sides of a rectangular outline and is scored as at 5 at the fourth side so as to enable the material of the body portion defined by the sheared and scored lines to form a tongue 6 which can be bent rearwardly on the scored line 5 to form a prop for the body portion. Preferably the scored edge is the one adjacent the bottom of the body rtion as clearly shown in the drawing. ccordingly, the container2 being displayed can be inserted in the opening 4 and it will then rest upon the hinged end of the tongue 6, thereby preventing the tongue from swinging back on the scored line or hinging 5. This construction accordingly enables me to construct a display stand of cardboard and-utilize the article being displayed as a means for retaining the prop in operative position.
Preferably the box or'article being displayedfi is frictionally held in position by means of a tongue 7 at one edgeof the openin 4. In the present showing, I have located this tongue 7 at the top of the said opening, and form the same by extending the side shearing for the opening a little beyond the required height for the opening relying upon the resiliency of the materia forming the body portion to actuate said tongue into frictional contact with the article being displayed. It is' not to be understood, therefore, that I confine myself to a rectangular shape, as it is within the scope of the present invention to vary the shape of the opening to correspond to theV particular article being displayed. If found .desirable or necessary, I may also stamp out a supplemental tongue 8 from the prop 6 as shown in Figures 3 and 4, this supplemental tongue 8 being free to swing out of the plane of said tongue behind the article being displayed and retain said article within the openin 4 of the body por# tion. While this suppemental tongue 8 is -shown in the drawing as utilized in the device having a friction tongue 7 to engage the 95 article, it will be understood that I do not confine myself to use of both tongues 7 and v 8 at the same time. It is also to be understood that I may glue or otherwise secure on the back of the material forming the display '100 stand suitable fabric or other 11e-enforcements 9 at any or all of the lines of bending of the material. This use of fabric re-enforcement will lengthen the life of the display stand, adding to the durability at the points of greatest wear due to iexing of the material. I also deem it within the scope of the present invention to make other detail changes and modifications without departing from the Spirit or scope of the present invent-ion, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown, except as set yforth in the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim 1. A display stand comprising a body portion having upstanding portions angularly disposed with respect to a transverse plane so as to strengthen said body portion for supporting the weight of an article to be displayed, said body portion having an opening therein for reception of said article and support thereof on an upstanding portion of said opening and a tongue bent from said opening at one edge of the same, said tongue acting as a prop for the display stand and retained in its propping relationship by posi; tioning of the article to be displayed in said opening.
2. A display stand comprising a body portion having upstanding portions angularly disposed with respect to a transverse plane sol as to strengthen said body portion `for supporting the weight of an article to be displayed, said body portion having an opening therein for reception of said article and support thereof'on an upstanding portion of said opening, a tongue bent from said opening at 'one edge of the same, said tongue acting as a prop for the display stand and retained in its propping relationship by positioning of the article to be displayed in said opening, and means or retaining the article to be displayed in said opening.
3. A display stand comprising a body portion having upstanding portions angularly disposed with respect to a transverse plane so as to strengthen said body portion for supporting the weightof an article to be displayed, a prop cut out of said body portion thereby providing an openin where the prop is cut out, said prop being lbent rearwardly from the lower upstanding edge of said opening at substantially right angles to the body portion, said opening substantiall fitting the article to be displayed whereby t e upstanding portion of the body portion below the opening will support the said article in elevated position and said article will engage flatwise against the hinged marginal end of said proper and retain the said prop in said position at substantially right angles to the body portion.
4. A display stand comprising a body portion having upstanding portions angularly disposed with respect to a transverse lane so as to strengthen said body portion or supportin the weight of an article to be displaye a prop cut out of said body portion thereby providing an openin where the prop is cut out, said prop being bent rearwardly from the lower upstanding edge of said opening at substantially right angles to the body portion, said opening substantiall fitting the article to be displayed whereby the upstanding portion of the body portion below the opening will support the said article in elevated position and said article will engage fiatwise against the hinged marginal end of said prop and retain the said prop in said position at substantially right angles to the body portion, and a frictional tongue at the opposite end ofsaid opening from said prop whereby said tongue and prop will press against said article toward each other.
5. A display stand comprising a body portion, a prop bent at substantially ri ht angles to said body portion cut from said tion so as to provide an opening therein for u ody pori
