Application filed January 5, 1928. Serial No. 244,743.
This invention relates to connecters and more particularly to a device for making connections to high voltage live wires which may Fe employed without cutting oil the current.
An important object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which will make a positive connection which is very firm as compared with the ordinary spring connection employed.
A still further object of the invention is to rovide a device of this character which may he very readily and cheaply constructed, which will be durable and efficient in service and a general improvement in the art.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a connecter constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof; Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the clamping jaws.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 generally designates an L-shaped metal body, one arm 11 of which is formed at one end thereof with a socket 12, in which the wire 13 which is to be attached 30 to the live wire may be soldered, as the first step in making the connection. The other arm 14 has formed therein adjacent the connection of the arms a pair of threaded openings 15 and 16, which parallel the arm 11 and has formed in its inner face adjacent its outer end a groove 17, the base of which is convexly curved transversely of the arm 14;, as indicated at 18. A clamping arm 19 is provided. This clamping arm consists of a metallic block of slightly greater width than the arm 11 and having one end thereof notched, as at 20, to receive the arm 11, the notch producing arms 21 engaging this arm at opposite sides thereof. In alignmentwith the opening 16,- the clamping arm 19 has formed therethrough an opening 22 of greater diameter than the diameter of a screw or bolt 23 which may be threaded in the opening 16. The base of the arm 19 remote from the arm 14 is bossed at 24 for engagement with gage the inn the head of this bolt, and the inner face thereof adjacent its outer end is transversely concavely curved, as indicated at 25,-to correspond to the curvature of the bottom of the groove 17. Through the opening 15, a screw 26 is directed to engage the inner end of the arm 19 and thus provide resistance against the upward movement of the inner end of the arm 19 when the bolt is tightened against the live wire 27.
In the use of the device, after the wire 13 has been connected to the arm 11, the arms 14 and 19 are separated sufficiently to admit the wire therebetween and align it with the 'groove 17. The screw 23 is then tightened until the Wire is firmly clamped between the clamping elements in adjusted positions.
It will be obvious that an operation of this character may be very readily and rapidly accomplished and will provide an excellent electrical connection between the wires 13 and 27. It will also be obvious that the structure employed is capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of the invention and I accordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A clamp for lead wires comprising an L-shaped metallic body one arm of which has a threaded opening, a screw directed through said opening, a clamping arm mounted upon the screw and havin engagement with the other arm of the body preventing its rotation about'the screw as an axis, the outer ends of the clamping arm and the confronting arm of the L-shaped body being oppositely transversely curved, the other arm of the body having a socket for the reception of a wire, and a screw extending through the first named, arm of the body adjacent the connection of the arms and adapted to ener end of said clamping arm at the inner face thereof.
