Description
J. L. HUTcH'INsoN.
- STOVE- LINING- N0.17,3,64..0. Patented Feb..15, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE.
JEssEL. HUTcHINsoN, oF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOV'E-LININGS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 173,640, dated February 15, 1826; application tiled .January 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concer-n Be it known that I, JEssE L. HUTcHINsoN, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Stove and Range Linings, of which the following is a specilication; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my snid invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a peculiar construction and arrangement ot' the bl`ocks of soap Stone, tire-brick, or other conductingY material usually employed to line stoves, ranges, &c., to protect the metallic plates surrounding the re, and those forming the sides of the oven, from becoming injured by overheating; and consists in adapting the horizontal bricks, or those recessed into'the plates forming the top oi' the oven, or other part of the stove or range, to lap lover and cover the spaces existing between the upright nre-'bricks and the adjacent plates, as hereinafter fully described.
In the further description ot' my invention which follows, d ue reference must be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specitication, and inwhich- Figure l is a cross-section of a yportion of a range illustrating my invention, and Fig. 2 a 4plan of a part of the range, withV the upper portion or plate removed, in order to' show the arrangement of the bricks.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar part-'s of the invention in both the views.
A is lthe grate, and B, B, and C the upright fire-bricks surroundingthe same. The bricks B B are adjacent to the plates forming the sides ofthe ovens, and serve to protect the said plates from becoming overheated. D D are the horizontal bricksy resting within depressionsin the plates E, which form the tops ot' the ovens E. In the usual arrangement of fire-bricks in stoves and ranges, the spaces h which necessarilyexist between the side bricks and the stove-plates are uncovered and become filled with ashes, which'pack tightly therein, and force the bricks from their places, causing them to break when expanded by the heat from the lire. In my invention, the bricks D cover thek spaces existing between the bricks B and 'the sides oi' the ovens, and
'thus prevent the entrance thereto of ashes, as
aforesaid, and admit oi' the arranging of the bricks with sufficient space between them and the plates of the stove to allow of any alteration in' their shape by warping, when subjected JESSE L. HUTOHINSON.
