This invention relates to bill files of the type forming the subject matter of my copending application filed November 13, 1928, Serial No. 319,054, and including a pocketforrning body and a support therefor, the

' connection of the body with the support being such that the body may be swung from an open position where the pocket is horizontally disposed and the bills may be readily inserted to a vertical posit-ion Where the pocket is concealed from View;

A further object of the invention is to'produce a device of this character which is so counterweighed that it will remain in either of its positions.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for holding the bills within the pocket as the device is moving from its closed to itsopen position which is of such character that it automatically releases the bills as the device arrives at its open position to permit ready handling thereof or the ready insertion of other bills.

These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a bill file constructed in accordance with my invention;

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View showing the device applied to a support, the device being shown in its closed position in full lines and in its open position in dotted lines;

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View therethrough taken on the line 33 of Figure 1. I

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the front wall, 11 the side walls and 12 the bottom wall of a bill-receiving pocket which has no top or back wall. Associated with this pocket is'a supporting bracket 12 substantially U-shaped in form and having at the center of the cross-bar an eye 13. The crossbar is arranged uppermost and the depending arms 14 are so spaced that they just fit between the adjacent faces of the side walls 11 of the bill compartment,

At their lower ends, these arms are bent at rightangles so that they extend forwardly, as indicated at 15, and the ends of these forward extensions are outturned to form pivots 16, which extend through the'side walls 11 adjacent the bottoms thereof and in close proximity to the inner face of the front wall 10.

Pivoted to the rear edge of the bottom wall, as at 17, is a bent lever 18, the upper end of which is in the form of a pair of fingers19 and the lower end of which has secured thereto a counterweight 20. The angle of the lever is such that the counterweight constantly serves to urge the fingers 19 toward the inner face of the wall 10 when this wall is vertically directed and will maintain the fingers in this position until the front wall has moved about the pivot 16 through approximately 10. The front wall 10 extends below the pivotal connection a distance sufficient to provide a heel 21 which, by its engagement with the forwardly turned portions 15 of the arms of the bracket 12, will limit the downward movement of the compartment when the front wall thereof is substantially horizontally disposed. At this time the preponderance of weight lies outwardly of the pivots and the compartment will naturally remain in this position. When, however, the compartment is swung to its vertical position, the counterweight 20 plus the weight of the portions of the side walls lying to the rear of pivots 16, serves to maintain it in this position so that no means for holding the compartment in its closed position are necessary. The rear edges of the side walls 11 are preferably provided with outturned flanges 22 to engage against the wall upon which the bracket is secured and prevent damage there to. If desired, the arms 14 may act to assist in maintaining the compartment in its closed position by frictional engagement with the inner faces of the walls thereof.

Elongation of the arms 14 in the manner illustrated enables the entire device to be very securely fastened to the Wall by a relatively small securing element.

Since the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of the invention, I do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim 1. In combination, a bill compartment comprising front, bottom and side walls, a anate. a be ched to a Wal s rface including forwardly extending arms the outer ends of which have pivots engaging said compartment in proximity to the rear face of said front wall and adjacent the lower end thereof, the front wall being continued below the pivots to provide a heel to engage said forwardly extending portions of the bracket and limit swinging movement of the compartment when the front wall is substantially horizontally disposed, and means counterweighting the front wall structure when in a vertical position to resist movement thereof about said pivot. 2, In combination, a bill compartment comprising front, bottom and side walls, a bracket adapted to be attached to a wall surface including forwardly extending arms the outer ends of which have pivots engaging said compartment in proximity to the rear face of said front wall and adjacent the lower end thereof, the front wall being continued below the pivots to provide a heel to engage said forwardly extending portions of the bracket and limit swinging movement of the compartment when the front wall is substane tially horizontally disposed, and means counterweighting the front wall structure when in a vertical position to resist movement thereof about said pivot, the rear edges of said side walls having flanges for engagement with the wall to which the bracket is secured.

In combination, a bill compartment comprising front, bottom and side walls, a bracket adapted to be attached to a wall surface including forwardly extending arms the outer ends of which have pivots engaging said compartment in proximity to the rear face of said front wall and adjacent the lower end thereof, the front wall being continued below the pivots to provide a heel .to engagesaid fomva-rdly extending portions of the bracket and limit swinging movement of the compartment when the front wall is sub stantially horizontally disposed, and means counterweighting the front wall structure when in a vertical position to resist movement thereof about said pivot, comprising a bent lever pivoted to the rear edge of said rear wall and having its upper end in the form of fingers to engage against bills disposed against the front wall, the lower end of the lever hav ng a counterweight secured thereto to urge said fingers toward the front wall when the front wall is vertically disposed and during initial movement of the front'wall from a vertical position to a horizontal position.
