Description
.N v. 12,1929. T. c. GREEN 1,735,751
' SAFETY RAZOR Filed Aug. 24, 1927 INVENTOR J z I a; Z7 7 Tfiagizaa' 6367/47.
ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 12, 1929 icE THOMAS C. GREEN, or Nasnvinnn, TENNESSEE SAFETY RAZOR Application filed August 24, 1927. Serial No. 215,184.
My invention relates to safety razors and an object thereof is to provide a safety razor which when not in use may be arranged into 4 a small compact package.-
The invention also contem lates a safety razor wherein a hollow han le is provided which constitutes a container for the remaining parts when the razor is disassembled.
v With the preceding and other objects and advantages ,-in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved safety razor in operative positon,
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the head, guard and blade disassembled,
Figure 3 is a view partly in elevation and partly in cross section,
Figure 4 is an elevation illustrating the device used as a straight handle type of razor, i a Y is an elevation of a modification c Figure 5 of the invention,
Figure 6 is a erspective of the rotary head used in con unction with Fig. 5, and
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view of both embodiments of the invention contained within a receptacle.
Referring to the invention in detail a split cylindrical head 5 formed with a recessed flattened surface 6 extending the entire length of the head and leaving a longitudinal shoulder 7 at a point remote from the adjacent end of the head 'is provided for the reception of a blade 8, the latter being of a length and width to fit in the recessed surface with one longitudinal edge abutting the shoulder 7.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the split in the head is of such width as to permit the blade to project between the edges thereof and '45 to provide a suflicient clearance for the pas- :edges.
or 13 of a shank 14: when the device is used in the fashion of the well known straight handle razor. To connect the shank with the head to extend at right angles to the latter, it is provided with a threaded opening 15 located centrally of its ends at one side thereof and arranged to receive one of the threaded ends 12 or 13.
A cylindrical hollow handle 16 closed at one end having a threaded opening 17 to receive one of the threaded ends of the shank is provided, the handle constituting a container for the head and shank when not in use. A blade holder 18 is provided for the head which is formed from a length of resilient metal roller into a split sleeve to conform 'to and insertable endwise on the head. Guard fingers 19, olfset inwardly, extend along the blade with their outer ends slightly projecting beyond the cutting edges thereof, are formed on one edge of the blade.
At one edge the guard is formed with an inwardly directed flange 20 which overlies adjacent edge of the head to eliminate sharp When not in use the shank is disposed within the head with one end threaded into the opening 11 and the shank and head inserted into the hollow handle. The head is then rotated to thread the opposite end of the 'shank into the opening 17 in the handle to hold the parts of the razor together against loss.
To permit the head to be readily rotated to engage or disengage the shank from the handle a pair of upstanding finger engaging lugs 21 are formed upon the outer'face of the solid end portion.
It will be observed that my improved razor consists of a comparatively few parts which may be readily assembled for use and when not in use will be encased within the tubular handle to provide a small package which can be conveniently carried in the users pocket should he desire-not to carry a hand In Figs. 5 and 6, a rotary type of razor is shown which comprises a rotary circular h'ead 22 provided with a slot 23 to afiord a cutting 100- edge 24 at one side. At one end the head is formed with a lateral shaft 25 having a threaded extension 26 for threaded engagement with a flexible shaft, not shown. A cylindrical handle 27 having a coaxial bearing 28 at one end is provided. When'not in use the head is held in,the. handle by a set screw 29 with its threaded extension passed through the bearing. In use, however, the head is arranged at the forward end of the casing with the shaft revoluble in the bearing and the threaded extension ongaged with a flexible shaft which extends into the handle.
A cylindrical guard 30 is positioned on the head to protect the user. 1
A container 31 is provided having a pair of circular pockets 32 to accommodate the two razors.
I claim 1. In a razor, a hollow cylindrical member having one end closed and providedwith a socket, a hollow cylindrical blade holding member having a socket at one end, a detachable shank having threaded engagement with the socket of the cylindrical member and one side of the blade holder, when not in use the shank being received within the hollow member and blade carrying member and detachably connected with the sockets of such parts to hold the blade holder within the hollow member.
2. In a razor a hollow cylindrical member having an end wall provided with a central threaded opening, a hollow cylindrical blade holding member also having an end wall provided with a central threaded opening, a
shank having one end threaded in the threaded opening of the hollow cylindrical member and its other end threadedly engaged with one side of the blade holding member, when not in use the blade holding member being secured within the hollow member by the shank engaging the threaded openings in the blade holding member and the hollow member respectively.
