INVENTUB ATTORNEYS N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHQGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D Q UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
CHARLES FRANKLIN TOWSLEY, OF BRINKLEY, ARKANSAS.
IM PROVEMENT IN HARNESS-TUGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173.568, dated February 15, 1876; application filed January 7, 1876.
To all'whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. TOWSLEY, of Brinkley, Monroe county, Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Thill-Loop, of
which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a metal loop for suspending the thill of a buggy from the back strap, the said loop having a latch-piece to .open for admitting the thill and closing it in;
also, a lining of soft material in the bottom, to avoid wearing the thill, and also having suitable connections for-suspending it from the back-strap and connecting the girth.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved thill-loop, showing the latch open, and Fig. 2
'is a sectional elevation showing the latch closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 'spondin g parts.
A represents the metal loop, consisting of a light thin piece of metal, bent, cast, or otherwise formed in suitable shape to hold a thill, with a latch-piece, B, hinged in one side, an eye, 0, at the top, a girth-connecting attach- I ment, D, at the bottom, a soft lining, E, in the inside of the bottom, and a girth-loop, F, all as represented in the drawing. The latch is for admitting the thill and closing it in, and it is fastened by a pin, G, and slide H. The eye 0 is for attaching the loop to the pad or backstrap. The lining is to protect the thill from wear by the metal. The attachment D is for connecting a'strap for buckling the girth to,
and theloop F is for the outside girth to pass through, to prevent the loop from swinging forward and backward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the hinged latch-piece B, having the pin G, clasp H, and girth-loop F, with the metal thill-loop A, provided with the lining E, eye 0, and girth attachment-D,
all constructed as herein shown and described.
CHARLES FRANKLIN TOWSLEY.
