, H. RESLEY.
CAR-COUPLER.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
HORACE RESLEY, OF CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,343, dat'ed February 8, 1876; application filed September 17, 1875. f
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE RESLEY, of Cumberland, in the County ot'Alleghany and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Car-Goupling; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which l igure 1 is a Vertical longitudin'al section; Fig. 2, a plan view; Fig. 3, a Vertical section, showing the use of the supplemental piu.
The invention relates to certain improvements in that class of car-couplings which op' erate automatically by means ot' a gravitycatch; and it consists in' the particular con: struction and arrangement of parts, as hereinatter described, and] pointed out in the y claim.
In the drawing, A represents the draw-bar ot' my improved couplin g, which is constructed With a centralvertical longitudinal slot '13,' in Which plays the gravity-catch G. Said catch is made With a c oncave face, a, and is provided with an open bearing, 6, which moves around the rounded portion c of the draw-bar as a pivot, being guided in its said motion by the lugs d d, which move in Circular guide ways ff in the d'aW-bar. D represents a hole in the front part ot' the gravity-catch, and E a second hole in the botto'm ot' the drawbar, which holes are arranged to register With each other, so as to receive a supplemental coupling pin, F, ot' the ordinary construction. The objectof this arrangement is to adapt my coupling devices to receive and secure the short links that are ordinarily used with the common form of draW-bar and coupling-pin,
so that a car provided with my coupling may not only be coupled with another provided with a similar device, 'but may be coupled With any of the ordinary draw-bars now in use.
In using the ordinary form of coupling-pin for short links itis necessary to elevate slightly the gravit y-catch, so as to bring the holes D' and E in alignment.
Upon each side of the catch G are shoulders g g, which rest upon the top of the speciallyprovided links G, to hold them in proper position to enterthe month of the'next drawbar.
By means of the above-described arrangement is provided a very simple and effective automatic coupling, Which requires but little change in the construction of the draxv-bar, and which is well adapted to be used with the ordinary form of coupling.
I 'am aware of the fact that numerous automatic couplings have been constructed which operate upon the same general principle ot' my devices, and I therefore contine my invention to the particular construction and arrangement as shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The automatic coupling, consisting of the purpose described.
HORACE RESLEY.
