Description
Oct. 22, 1929. 1. SVHAVER REFUSE DISPENSER Filed March 19, 1927 Patented Oct. 22, 1929 JOE SHAVER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA REFUSE DISPENSER Application filed March 19, 1927.
My invention relates to new and useful i1nproveinents in retuse disoensers and has for its principal object the provision of a device oi' this character which is adapted to be connected to a sinh to receive the retuse through the usual drain opening in the sinh and to dispose of the samo through the usual drain pipe.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a grinding device whereby the refuse may be ground and then washod through the drain pipe for disposal.
A further object ot' the invention consists in the provision of means whereby the retuse may be washed 'froni the trap i orined in the drain pipe so as to prevent clogging within the trap.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, ny invention consists in the no de tails of Construction and arrangenent ot parts, described in the 'following specification and illustrated in the acconpanying draw ings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred enibodinients of the invention, as they now appear to nie, it will be understood that such changes may be nade as will fall within the scopo of the appended clains.
ln the drawings I have illustrated a longitudinal vertical section with parts shown in side elevation.
In the drawings 1 indicates a tragnental portion ot the bottom of a sinh of usual con- 35 struction having an opening through which extends and is supported the upper part of a hopper A perforated drain cover 3 is hingedly connected at 4 to the top ot the hoppor and when in closed position allows water to drain froni the sink and when raised or opened allows refuse to be placed within 'the hopper. The hopper is forined with the laterally extending outlet 5 which is connocted to the upper section 6 of the drain pipe and the bottom outlet 7 which has connected thereto the housing 8 for the spiral grinding cylnder 9. Secured to the grinding cylinder is a shaft 10 which is driven from an electric notor 11 or other suitable source 01 power for Operating the grinding cylinder. A per` Serial No. 176,757.
Froni the above detailed description it is thought that the Construction will be clearly understood and I will now endeavor to more full bring out the operation. When the pertorated drain cover 3 is lowered into the position shown in the drawings the sink is used in the usual nanner and the water therefrorn will drain throu 'h the perforations in the drain cover and into the hopper 2. A certain amount of the water will necessarily flow through the grinder housing into the drain pipe section 13 while the greater amount ot' the water will drain through the outlet opening 5 and through the sections 6 and 13 ot' the drain pipe into the trap l l froni which it is discharged into the sewer connection. Vhen it is desired to dispose of retuse the drain cover 3 is raised and the retuse placed within the hopper 2 treni which it is discharged into the grinder housing 8. The grinding cylinder is then Operating through means of the electric motor 11 or other suitable source of power to grind the reiuse and discharge the same into the section 13 of the drain pipe. With the water turned on for discharge into the sinh the ground refuse will be readily washed through the pipe section 13 it being understood that a certain amount of water will be passet through the grinder housing whereas another amount. ot' water will be passed through the outl et 5 into the pipe section 6 for discharge upon the top of the ground refuse within the section 13 to aid in the discharge thereot. In order to prevent the accumulation of the ground refuse within the trap 14: and to prevent clogging of the trap water will be discharged through the pipe 16 and extension 15 toaid in discharging the ground refuse through the trap. It will thus be seen that not only have I provided ready means tor grinding retuse but the device is so constructed that the Water is discharged in a manner to readily flow the ground retuse through the drain pipe and through the drain trap.
VJith the use ot a device of the character described I may readiiy dispose of all rei'use and gar'oage except hard articles such as bones and With the use of the device I do away With the necessity of garbage or refuse containers and the hauhng and burning of the same.
Having tully described my invention What I claim as new and desre to Secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In combination With a sinh; adapted to receive Water and having a discharge outlet, a hopper positioned heneath the discharge outlet and adapted to receive retuse, mea-Ils for gr'nding the retuse, a drain pipe adapted to receive the ground retuse, and means for dischar-ging` Water fiowing 'rom the sinh into the drain ppe at a point above the entry of the ground re'use.
2. In conbination With a sinh adapted to receive Water and having a discharge outlet, a hopper positioned beneath the discharge outlet and adapted to receive refuse, means tor grinding the retuse, means tor discharging part ot' the Water flowing froni the sink into the drain pipe at the point Where the ground reluse enters the drain pipo, and means for discharging the other part of Water .into the drain pipe at a point above the point Where the ground retuse enters the drain pipe. 3. :[11 conbination With a sinh adapted to receive Water and having a discharge outlet, a hopper positioned beneath the discharge 40 outlet and having a bottom opening and a side opening, said hopper being adapted to receive I'Gi IISG a housing seeured to the hopper and having an opening communicating With the bottom opening thereof, a drain pipe communicating with the housing and the side opening ot' the hopper, and means within the housing tor grindin; refuse received 'rom the hopper and to discharge the same into the drain pipe, Water from the sinh passing through both the bottom and side openings of the h opper to flow the ground retuse through the drain pipe.
In testimony whereot I hereunto afix my signature.
JOE SHAVEB.
