IMPROVEMENTVJI'N" GRAlN- SEPARATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,259, dated February 8, 1876; application filed- July 19, 1875.
' State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fanning-Mills; and
, do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
.making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fanning-mills 'or grain-separators; and it consists in the construction of the shoe containing the sieves,
.and in the devices for shaking said shoe, as
will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
, In order to enable others skilled in the art to .which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a fanning mill embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents the frame of a fanning-mill, with hopper B and fan (3, the latter being rotated by any suitable mechanism attached to the mill. D represents the shoe, suspended upon, or by, spring-straps a a. 1n the lower part of the shoe D are arranged four screens or sieves, E E, of unequal length and fineness. The bottom sieve is the shortest and finest, the second one is longer and coarser, and so on in regular gradation; and under the front end ofeachsieve is a spout, G, which spouts are arranged to run two to each side of the shoe. At the lower end of the shoe is another spout or outlet, G], for carrying off everything that does not pass through the first sieve.
By this arrangement of sieves and spouts any kind of grain may be passed through the machine and properly cleaned and separated. One end of the fan-shaft b is provided with a crank, d, which is connected by a rod, I, with an arm, J, projecting at right angles from a rod or shaft, 6, which has its bearings at the end of the frame A below the upper end of the shoe. From the rod or shaft 6 projects an arm, h, which is bound with rubber i or other suitable material, to prevent noise, and extends up into a slot, .90, made in a block, L, attached to the under side of the shoe D at the front orv upper end. By the rocking of the shaft 6 the arm h operating in the slotted block causes the shoe to move or shake endwise; but as the slot min the block is made wider than the thickness of the arm placed therein, it will be seen that the shoe is acted upon with a blow at each vibration of the shaft, thus obtaining exactly the same knocking motion as-a sieve operated by hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the suspended shoe D, of the block L, having slot as, and the rocking-arm h having binding z, and projecting into the slot, the parts being arranged to give the shoe a knocking motion, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of July, 1875.
