This invention relates to multi-color pencil cases, and its object is to provide means for protruding from the endpiece or point of the case a pencil of one desired color, and then 5 withdrawing that pencil and extending another of another color for use.
This invention consists of the special construction and arrangement of parts by which the above stated object is accomplished quick- 10 ly, certainly and conveniently, those parts being readily and cheaply manufactured and assembled.
The preferred construction of this invention is illustrated-in the accompanying drawings of which Fig. 1 represents a longitudinal sectional View of all parts assembled. Fig. 2 is a view with a portion of the external member broken away to disclose the grooved slide-guiding member within. Fig. 3 is a section on the broken line 3--3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top view of the slide member. The scale of drawings in all the figures has been considerably increased overthe actual size of the invention to make clear the construction. f Throughout the drawings and description the same number is used to refer to the same part.
Considering the drawings it will be noted that there are two tubular or hollow side members 1 and 2, and that both those members at one end are secured usually by soldering to the tip member 3 or point of the pencil case, having the customary outlet passage 4 for the pencil 5. The reason for making the side members tubular is to save weight and to provide ample storagechambers for the pencils. The pencils consist of alioned and relatively short pieces as shown in PFigs. land 2.
Between the side members is a guide member 6 having usually two grooves 7 and 8 opening outwardly. In the grooves ofthe guide are located movably the toes 9 of the slides or pencil pushers which are designated as a whole by the number 10. There are two slides as this invention is ordinarilymade, but one slide may be used with either groove as hereinafter explained. and 2, and the pencil 5 is held by the clamping action of the holder so as to .proj ect therefrom as shown in Fig. 2. The pencil holder 11 is a tube as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, made lof spring metal and having a longitudinal slot for the admission of the toe 9 of the slide. The end of the holder is split to the slot as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, and the split end resiliently grasps the. pencil 5. In like manner the split and resilient end of the spring metal holder 11 grips the toe of the sliding or plunger member 10, and the pencil is thus advanced or withdrawn together with the holder 11 by the movements given the sliding member 10.
In Fig. 4 there will be noted a widened and threaded end 12 with which the slide is provided. The thread is an interrupted thread as illustrated, and it engages the internal screw threads of an external tubular member 13 as shown in Fig.v1. The threads are right and left hand threads and they are referred to by numbers 14 and 15. The threaded ends 12 of the slides are located upon opposite sides of the carrier guide member 6 as shown in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2 it will be noted that the end of the external member 13 surrounds the slightly reduced inner end of the tip member or point l3. The external member is movable thereon.
In Fig. 3 it will be notedV that each side member k1 and 2 has a slight protuberance which enters the opening 16 between the grooved portions of the guide. The longitu-v dinally open tubes comprising the double guide 6 are as usuallyconstructed soldered together at the sides in the relative positions illustrated, and the small openings or depressions 16 are formed in the solder. The tubes are soldered on both sides, and on each side there is an opening 16.kv This engagement is intended to insure the guide against turning between the side members, otherwise than will be understood from the explanation of the operation of this invention.
Considering Figs. 1 and 2 it will be noted that the upper end of the external member 13 is closed by a cap 17, which hasan internal shoulder 18 against the end of the member 13. It is also shown in this figure that the cap 17 has a removable plate seated interiorly in its end, and the plate is marked 19 and its seat 20. Pivotally connected with the plate 19 is a spacer bloclr 21. The pivotal connection is made by means oiC the pintle 22 projecting trom the spacer block as illustrated.
ln the operation of this invention it will be observed in Fig. 1 that the slides are at different ends of the grooved member or double guide 6. One ulide is in engagement with one spiral thread oiE the external member and the upper slide engages the reverse thread. The tip member 3, the side members 1 and 2, the guide and the slides may all be held stationary by taking the tip member 3 in one hand. New, if the external member 13 be suitably turned with the other hand, the slide shown nearest the Vend piece in Fig. 1 will be withdrawn into the interior, and the other slide caused to extend the second pencil from the tip member. As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the engagement between the conical tip member 3 and the external barrel or body member 13 is rictional, and the tip and body may be separated, whereupon the side tubes 1 and 2 can be drawn out ot the body, and with them the double guide 6. lt will be 'further noted in the operation that, it so desired.I the toe 9 of the slide may be forced against the pencil, and by reason of the grip of the holder upon the pencil the holder 11 correspondingly pressed against the internal shoulder 23 of the end piece. The holder will be stopped, but the used pencil may be discharged by way oit' the passage et, and another pencil substituted in the holder. 1With that intention, the holders are constructed of metal possessing some elasticity. rlhe protuberances mentioned herein as being formed on each of the side members 1 and 2 and designated by reference numbers 24; and 25, are in function small trunnions, and by reason ot their engagements with the openings 16,
