IMPROVEMENT IN WINDMILLS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,075,6ated February 1, 1876; application filed 1 January 10, 1876. 4
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH S. SMITH, of Good Hope, in the county of McDonough and State of. Illinois, have in vented a new and usevful Improvement in, Windmills; and I do' hereby declare that the following is 'a full,
top of a suitable post, provided with'suitable bearings for the wheel-shaft; and its novelty consists in the arrangement and combination, with a wind-wheel, of a cross-head,provided with a socket to iit on top of the post, and braces, which are attached at their lower ends to a thimble, forming a durable and efficient I turn-table, hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A represents the post; B,
the wind-wheel. 0 represents the cross-head, (shown clearly in Fig. 3,) to which the braces J J arefirmly attached. These bracesextend down'the post A to the thiinble S, to which they are also firmly attached. A top view of the thimble S is shownin Fig. 4. The socket over the end of the post. The post is provided with asuitable cap, 41, on which thecross-head rests. (See Fig. 2.) The wind-wheel B is attached to the shaft '11, and is provided with a brake-Wheel and other suitable appliances for operatingthe same, which is fully described in Letters Patent which were granted to me May 5, 1874, No. 150,489.
The vane n is attached between ;the braces J J at their upper ends, which are bent over slightly for that purpose.
By this mode of constructing a turn-table for windmills I am enabled to produce a table that is easily acted upon by the wind. The very slightest change in the course-of the wind by means of the vane it causes the table to turn in that directiomkeeping the face of the wheel always in the right position to get the full force of the wind.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as-new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
In combination with a windavheel, a turntable composed of the vane n, cross-head C, provided with the socket t, braces J J, and thimble S, all constructed substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
, e E. S. SMITH.
