' IMPROVEMENT IN M,lTERlNG-MACHINES.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,955, dated February 1, 1876; application filed Y i July 10, 1875.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it .knoWn that I, CHRISTOPHER S. BEN- JAMIN, of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and "aluable Improvement in, Miteri-ng-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my mitering-machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal verticalsectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front View thereof.
The natureof my invention consists in a revolving bed-plate, secured to a table or bench in such manner as to admit of the machine being turned to the right or left, and containing a rocking frame that supports the standards and sliding saw-guides. I
My invention further consists in the workclamps and in the combination of parts, as

On this frame is a vertically-slotted stationary standard, O, and a similar standard, 0, is made movable in a longitudinal slot in the frame, and fastened at any point desired by setscrews. In place of slotted standards, two parallel standards may be used, inea'ch case their upper ends being connected by a cap hinged at one end, and fastened at the other end by a set-screw. In each standard, or between each pair of standards, is placed a sliding saw-guide, E, slotted to receive the sawblade. On the standards are adjustable stops e,to stop the downward movement of the saw-guides at any point, and thereby prevent the edge of the saw from coming in contact with the iron-work of the machine. By tilting the frame B,-the standards and saw-guides be adjusted at any angle from said point, and
held by a bolt, f, working in the slot in the base. In this frame is a'screw, I, which works in a female screwthrough the movable jaw J, and works loose through another movable jaw, J, and upon the end of the screw is a nut, h, held-stationary, or rather kept from turning with the screw by any suitable means, so that by turning the screw I the jaws J J will traverse back and forward equidistant from each other. To increase or diminish the space between the jaws the nut h must be unlocked, and then run out or in as required, making the space in the clamp to correspond to the width of the molding required. Two of these clampsare used, one on each side of the frame B, and they are adjusted at any desired angle to each other. Two moldings being held by the two clamps, the saw is passed through at the juction of the twopieces. After the saw has cut through, the moldings are forced togetherat the joint by turning each screw I to the right, and drawn apart by reversing the by, the first joint or miter on the left-handjaw..

provided with a pin, .9, and fastened by a setscrew, t. The gage L P is set to the required length of the molding at the inner edge. The molding is then placed in the right-hand clamp, the inner corner against the gagetooth 8, the other end under the saw, which cuts it to the proper length, and the process continued until the requisite number of pieces are cut. r
- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the adjustable clump of the mitering-machine herein described, of the socket m, rod L, set-screw n, and collar 1?, provided with a pin, 8, and setscrew, t, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with'the circular slotted bed-plate and saw-frame, of the work-clamps having the adjustable jaws J J, screw I, wrench-nut h, and a gage, L P, attached to one of said clamps, substantially as'described, and for the purpose set'forth.
