VIOLIN TUNER.
Application filed September 30, 1927.
My invention relates to a supplemental tuning device for violins and is particularly adapted to overcome the well known difliculties experienced in properly tuning the E string of a violin. However, it will be understood that my invention can be utilized in tuning any string of a musical instrument if conditions encountered demand such use.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a device of the character specified which is simple in construction, cheap to produce, easily associated with a desired string and etlicient in operation.
With the above and other purposes in view my invention consists in the details of construction and the arrangement and corn bination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a fragment-of a violin showing my invention operatively associated with its E string;
Figure 2, an enlarged detail perspective view of my invention with a fragment of a violin string in operative association there with;
Figure 3, a plan view of my invention as shown in Figures 1 and 2 with certain elements thereof shown in operative position in full lines and in inoperative position in dotted lines; and
Figure 4, a detail view of the string engaging plunger.
Referring to the drawing A indicates a violin including the usual string anchor 10, bridge 11 and strings 12.
By referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4 it will be seen that my improved tuning device enibodies a U-shaped member B having arms 13, 14 and an arm connecting portion 15. The free ends of the arms 13 and 14: formed to provide oppositely disposed lateral hooks 16 and 17 respectively in which the desired string to be tuned is adapted to be engaged as clearly shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Disposed between the arms 13 and 14 is a string engaging plunger 18 having a Serial No. 223,172.
In op atic t will be apparent that when the ce is seated in the hooks 16 and 17 rotation of the screw 22 to the right will bring one ad of said screw into en with the plunger 18 and force the ainst the string. As movement of on opposite sides of the plunger is by ;he hooks 16 and 17 it will be t that the movement oi? said plunger increase the tension of the string until the desired tension is imparted for proper tuning.
I claim 1. A supplementary tuning device for violins comprising a U-shaped member having the free ends of its arms formed to pro vide oppositely disposed laterally opening hooks adapted to receive a violin string to be tuned while the latter is anchored at both ends, and means carried by the member between its arms operable against a string while the latter is engaged against said hooks.
2. A supplementary tuning device for violins comprising a U-shaped member hav- -lring engz ,"ii :ortiosis at the free ends of its arms, a St mg engaging plunger slidably and non-rotatably mounted in the arm connecting portion of said member, and means for moving and holding said plunger against string.
3. A supplementary tuning device for violins comprising a U-shaped member having string engaging portions at the free ends oi its are a, a string engaging plunger including iced arms slidably engaged in he arm connecting portion of said member, and a screw threaded in the member between the arms of the plunger operable to move said plunger against a string while the latter is engaged against said string engagmg portions.
