SUPERHEATING OF STEAM IN STEAM GENERATING INSTALLATIONS FORHIGH PRESSURE AND HIGHLY SUPERHEATED STEAM Filed March 12, 1927 /n 1/ en for: OTTO H HART/VAN Attorney Patented Aug. 6, 1929,

SUPERHEATIING or smart IN STEAM-GENERATING INSTALLATIONS non -HIGH-" PRESSURE AND HIGHLY-SUPERHEATED STEAM.
Application filed. March 12, 1927, Serial No. 174,964, and in Germany April 14, 1926.
My invention comprises improvements in andrelating to the sup'erheatingof steam in steam plants. It has already been proposed to superheat high-pressure live steam first in 5 a boiler-flue superheater and then to raise to a high temperature of superheat the intermediate steam still at a comparatively high pressure passing from the high-pressure additional or super-stage of the steam engine to 1 the succeeding normal pressure stage, after which it passes into a second boiler-flue superheater to be re-superheated to the necessary temperature and led to the high-pressure super-stage of the engine.
Where very high steam pressures of 50 to 100 atmospheres and more are concerned, and
especially where the highest possible superheats are to be obtained, for example, high superheats as far as possible-equal both in 0 the high-pressure or super-stage and also in the succeeding normal pressure stage of the engine, the said proposed arrangement is in some respects inadequate.
In order to provide for such inadequacies and at the same time essentially to simplify the installation by reducing the number and length of the superheated-steam pipes, the
present invention avoids the second boiler-flue superheater and replaces it by a separate extra-high-pressure boiler, in which, in order to effect a part of the intermediate superheating, saturated steam is generated at a pressure considerably higher than that corresponding to the desired temperature of superheat.
In a steam plant according to my invention there is a high-pressure boiler associated with one, two or more working boilers each with a single boiler-flue superheater, heating steam 40 being generated in this high-pressure boiler at a considerably higher pressure than in the remainingboile'rs, so that it may be uti-- lized for efieeting part of the intermediate superhcating, the other part being effected 5 by the live steam generated in the working boiler and superheated in the flue superhcater.
The drawingshows diagrammatically a steam plant according to my invention.
In the constructional form shown by way of example each high-pressure working boiler,
1, of a group or battery of boilers, is provided with asteam drum, 2, and boiler-flue superheater 4. From the boiler-flue superheaters, the highly superheated live steam of, for example,-65 atmospheres pressure passes first through the pipe, 6, into the heating coil systemof the second stage, '1, of the reheater or intermediate superheater, thereby efi'ecting a part of the intermediate superheating, and is thence led direct through the pipe, 24, into the super-stage, 9, of the engine. In a high pressure boiler, 25, saturated steam is generated in acoil, 26, at a"e onsid'erably higher pressure, for example, at 150 atmospheres, and at a correspondingly higher temperature before superheating than the steam generatedin the working boilers 1. The steam-generated in this higher-pressure boiler, 25., provides the heating steam forthe first'stage, 27, of the intermediate superheater, to the heating 'coils of which it is led through the pipe, 28.- The condensate from'the heating coils of this first stage of the intermediate superheater is fed by a pump, 29, into the steam generating coil, 26, of the higher-pressure boiler, 25, by way of the pipe, 30. The ex- .haust from the super-stage, 9, of the engine,
passes through the pipe, 8', and successively through the two stages," 27 and 7, of the intermediate superheater to the succeeding stage, 11. of the engine.
My invention has the advantage that the degree of superheat, both for the high-pres sure stage or super-stage of the engine and also for the succeeding stage, is increased while at the same time the installation is simplified by omitting or reducing the length of certain of the superheated-steam pipes, due
to the arrangement of an additional separate boiler working at a higher pressure.
It will be obvious that the structure described above is applicable not only to a bat tery of boilers as shown but to a single-boiler installation.
What I claim is In a steam-plant, the combination of a steam engine having a superstage and a second stage,
a plurality of boilers generating the working steam for said superstage, each of said boilers having a boiler-flue supcrhcater to superheat said working steam, a two-stage reheater between the superstage and the normal stage and adapted to superheat the exhaust steamfrom said superstage, and a high-pressure bqiler adaptedto generate heating steam for the other path of which is'connected to said the first stage (if the z'eheater at a' pressure plurality 9f boilers and to the said super considerably above that of the working steam, stage. t 1 the second stage of the reheater com rising In testimonyw'hereof 'I have aflixed my 5 a two-pith heat exchanger One path 0 which signature.
is connected to the first stageof' the superheater and to the second stage of the engme, OTTO H. HARTMAN N
