BELT BUCKLE.

This invention is a belt buckle having means for retaining the loose end of the belt, the object being to provide a liOht and inexpensive buckle of such construction that the loose end of the belt may be easily tucked behind the retaining element. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying` drawing and will be hereinafter' fully described, the novel features being` particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The buckle comprises a front member and a back member each stamped from a single sheet metal blank. The front member comprises top and bottom bars l connected by the end bars 2 and 3 and having wings l extending from their rear faces. rfhe end bar 2 is disposed approximately within the plane of the top and bottom bars l but is slightly inclined, its inner edge being just back of or at the rear faces of the bars 1 and its outer edge being flush with the front faces of the same and constructed with teeth The end barB is flat but is offset at its ends, as at (i. whereby it is disposed in spaced relation to the front of the buckle, and parallel with the bar 3 is a loop bar 7 which is offset forwardly from the front of the buckle and is connected therewith by the end webs 8, as shown. The back member of the buckle is an open rectangular plate 9 fitting between the wings or flanges fl and provided at its inner end with the forwardly projecting lugs or ears l() pivotally engaged upon a pintle ll Secured in and extending between the wings el. At the outer end of the back plate is a forwardly projecting lip 1Q which is adapted to lie in proximity to the teeth 5 when the back plate is swung forwardly.

The fast or anchoring end 18 of the strap is looped around the pintle 11 and the inner end of the back plate 9 and secured by stitching or otherwise fastening the extremity of the strap to the main length thereof. It will be noted that the front of the buckle is open and the free extremity of the strap or belt may, therefore7 be easily enga-ged behind the loop bar 7 and passed over the end bar 3. lV hen the strap is to be released, its free end is withdrawn from the loop bar and then swung across the edge of the lip 12 whereupon the lip will move away from the toothed end bar 2 and free the strap. By referring particularly to Fig. 3, itwill be noted that no free part of the buckle projects beyond the front or free end of the belt or strap and said end is held straightor fiat and retained by the loop or end-retaining bar which is located between the ends of the buckle. It will also be noted that the lip l2 does not project past the toothed bar but terminates short-thereof so that the strap is positively engaged and held by and between the edge of the lip and the bar.

Having fully described my invention what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is

l. A belt buckle consisting of an open front member having one end bar provided with teeth on its outer edge, a retaining bar near the opposite end bar of the member and offset freni the front face thereof, and a back member pivotally mounted on the front member and having a forwardly projecting lip at its free end adapted to hold a belt to the teeth on the end bar of the front member.

2, A belt buckle consisting of a front member having a toothed bar at one end, a bai' adjacent to the opposite end offset for ardly from the frontface of the member, and a loop bar adjacent the second-mentioned bar and between the two end bars and offset rearwardly from the front face of the member, and a back member pivotally mounted on the front member and having a lip at its free end adapted to lie in proximity to the toothed bar on the front member and also having an opening adjacent the pivot through which a belt may pass, the lip terminating short of the toothed bar whereby the strap will be positively engaged and held by and between the edge of the lip and the teeth of the bar.
