DOUBLE-ACTING TAIL GATE FOR DUMP TRUCKS.
Application filed February 1, 1927.
This invention relates to tail-gates for dump trucks and to hinging and locking More especially, there is provided so that the looks at both ends of the gate may be released simultaneously. The locks on the lower edge of the gate may be controlled from a point near the forward end of the vehicle body or they may be so arranged as to release the gate automatically when the dump body has been raised to a predetermined height. The locks at the top of the gate may be arranged as snap locks and various other improvements may be incorporated as will appear in the following detailed description, read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a tail-gate according to the invention showing the locking means and actuating mechanism therefor.
Figure 2 is an end elevation showing the tail-gate and locking mechanism shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view partly in section taken along the line in Figure 2 and looking in the direction of the arrows and showing in detail the means of locking the lower end of the gate.
Figure lis a view, partly in section, taken along the line l-4: in Figure 2 and looking in the direction of the arrows and showing in greater detail the means for locking the upper end of the gate.
Figure 5 is a view showing a modification of the actuating mechanism for the lock at the lower end of the gate and showing a means for automatically releasing the lock when the vehicle body has been raised to a n'edetermined height.
In Figure 1 there is illustrated at a the rear end of a dump truck body to which the tail-gate g is to be applied. There is :tas toned to each end of the top of the tail-gate g pin p by means of the brackets c which are Serial No. 165,057.

At each end. of the top of the dump body are riveted the rests which are bifurcated as at f, 7". Between the bifurcated ends of the rests 7' are pivoted locking hooks as by the pintle Z. At one end of the hook Z there is pinned a link or as by the pin or. Over the end of the link or is disposed the sleeve m which abuts against the end of the stop of on the end of the link. ll i thin the sleeve m disposed a spring m? and in the end of the sleeve threaded the link m which is pinned. to one end of the bent lever handle at. The bent lever handle a is keyed to the shaft a which is journaled in. bearings 12 at both sides under the body. At the other side of the body the shaft n is connected with the locking hook Z in an identical manner as that just described except that the handle lever a may be omitted.
At both ends of the bottom of the dump body are riveted the rests c. The bent books 71, are pinned at one side of the rests e to the body by the pins h. The bent books it have portions 11? formed on the inner side thereof for a purpose which will become more apparent hereinafter. To the other end of the bent hook it is pinned the link i as by the pin 11 and this link is in turn pinned to an arm keyed to the shaft 71: which is journaled in bearings it" carried with the body. The shaft :70 also has keyed thereto the arm 9' to which is pinned the rod 8 which extends to the under portion of the forward part of the dump body 0? and is pinned to one arm of the bent lever [J as at s. From the foregoing description the action of the arrangement will be apparent. If it is desired to open the tail-gate by releasing the top all that is necessary is to pull downwardly on the handle a. This will swing the hooks Z about the pivots Z releasing the pins 2? at the top of the gate and permitting the latter to swing downwardly about the pins p at the bottom of the gate. When. it is desired to close the gate the hooks Z may be returned to locking position first and the gate then swung upwardly. If desired the hooks 71 may be provided with automatic releasing means (Figure 5) whereby the pins p may be released automatically when the body has been elevated to a predetermined height about the pivot 00 pointon the chassis frame as'by the chain of the spring 2 by the chain s The arm 7" is held in the position indicated in the drawings against'the action It will be apparent that when the forward part of the body is raised about the pivot :22 the rearward part of the body will move downwardly releasing the tension on the chain 8 and allowing the spring 2 to pull the arm 7 to the right, thereby turning the shaft Z: and dropping the hooks it down *ardly to release the pins 1).
It will. thus be seen that there has been provided for use on dump truck bodies a double acting tail-gate which may be swung either upwardly or downwardly according to which of the sets of pins ordinarily used to retain it in place have been released; in which a simple, manually controlled releasing means has been supplied for the locking devices used to retain the pins on the top of the gate in place and which means may act as snap catches; and in which either manually cont-rolled or automatic means have been provided for releasing the means to ordinarily retain the pins carried with the hUlv tom of the gate in place. There have also been provided means for locking the hook releasing mechanisms as well as means to prevent breakage of the parts at the top of the gate when subjected to undue stresses during unloading. The entire arrangen'ient is simple, durable and easy to operate.
Nothing that has been said in the specification is intended as a limitation. upon the scope of the invention except as indicated in the appended claim.

In combination with a vehicle body, a tailgate, pins carried with the gate at the top thereof, means carried with the vehicle body to support the weight of the gate comprising rests for the pins, hooks pivotally carried with the body and adapted to engage the pins, manually operable means to disengage said hooks simultanemisly and. to lock said hooks in engaged position, resilient means operatively interposed between the hooks and said manually operable means whereby the hooks, previously locked in engaged position, may move to engage the pins, other pins'carried with the gate at the bottom thereof, hooks pivotally carried with the body and adapted to engage the last named pins and means to disengage said last named hooks simultaneously and to lock said last named hooks in engaged position.
