p PENI-IOLDER.
Application filed April 24,
The present invention relates to an improved type of pencil and pen holder, the same having more particular reference to a small appliance which is adapted to fit within a coat pocket, to receive and hold against displacement, pencils, pens and the like.
Briefly, the invention has reference to a structure of this class embodying a special receljitacle to slip down into the coat pocket, wherein this receptacle is formed on its interior with novel connn'essible and expansile means for accommodating and gripping the article to be held.
One feature of the invention is the novel retaining means within the receptacle, in the form of a compressible and expansible rubber sponge. i Y
Another feature of the invention is the casing which is constructed at its mouth to facilitate insertion of the article.
A further feature is an extended imitation handkerchief forming a part of the receptacle and provided with a safety pin or the like, whereby the complete appliance may be securely held within the coat pocket.
ln the drawings:
Figure l is an elevational view of an article `holder constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the same.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line MB of Figure 1.
Referring now to` the drawings by reference numerals, it will be observed that the casing is designated by the numeral et. rlhis may be of leather or hard rubber. It is of a shape and size `to be easily put down into the ordinary coat pocket. The upper open end is provided with an inturned curved lip 5, which facilitates4 the insertion and removal of the pencil e, (see Figure As before intimated this casing is provided with an upstanding extension (i, whose upper end 7 is serrated or the like, to provide an imitation handkerchief, which feature adds to the attractiveness of the device. It
1928. Serial No. 272,378.
will be noted that this extension is equipped with a safety pin or an equivalent retaining element 8, whereby the receptacle may be conveniently fastened within the coat pocket, in an obvious manner.
The retaining means within the receptacle is in the form of a rubber sponge 9. This .is attached to the front wall of the receptacle and is disconnected from the rear wall to provide a 4space to accommodate the pencil 6. Obviously, when the point of the pencil. is forced against the downturned lip 5, it naturally feeds itself between the sponge and the rear wall of the receptacle and the rubber of the sponge becomes depressed, as at l0, in Figure 3, te grip the pencil in a yieldable manner. In this way, the pencil is held against displacement, but can be easily pulled out when needed.
The simplicity of the structure is such as to obviate the necessity of a more elaborate description. Therefore, a further description is omitted.
Minor changes in the shape, size, and material may be resorted to, within the scope of the adjoined claim.
I claim:
As a new product of manufacture, a pencil and pen holder of the class described comprising an elol'igated receptacle open at its upper end, the front wall of the receptacle being provided with an inturned downwardly curved side lip termii'iating in close spaced proximity to the rear wall, the rear wall including an extension of tapered de sign having its upper edge serrated to form an imitation handkerchief, a safety pin carried by said extension, an upper conilncs` sible block like retainer within the receptacle fastened to the front wall and detached from the rear wall, the upper end of said retainer being in contact with the free edge of the lip, whereby to permit a pencil or pen to be placed against the lip and forced downwardly between the retainer and rear wall of the receptacle.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.V i
