UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcn.
DANIEL M. SULLIVAN, OF MONTGOMERY CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING COOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,446, dated December 21,1875; application filed August 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. SULLIVAN, of Montgomery city, county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Chicken- Ooops, which improvement is fully. set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In this invention the coop is formed in two sections, one section embracing the top and ends, the other section embracing the bottom and sides. These sections are united together by tenons on the sides and ends, which engage mortises in the top and bottom of the coop respectively. The sides and ends are hinged, by means of bars which pass through eyescrews, respectively to the bottom and top of the coop, so that they can be folded onto the same to occupy but little space in shipping The eye-screws can be adjusted to adapt them to the distance of the nearest bars from their respective bases.-
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the top section of the coop. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bottom'section of the coop. Fig. 3 is a side View, showing the coop folded together for shipping, when empty.
The coop is formed in two sections, the one section being composed of the ends A and top.
B, hinged, by means of eye-screws which engage with the nearest bar, at C, so as to fold flat together. The other section is formed by the bottom D and sides E, which are likewise connected by hinges c. When the parts are folded, as seen in Fig. 3, they are secured together by the hooks a of the top B engaging in eyes 12 of the bottom D. The coop occupies but very little space in this condition. The sides E and ends A are formed with tenons d and e at their ends, which enter mortises d and e of the top B and bottom D of the coop, so as to brace the coop firmly when in condition for holding chickens, and the two sections are held together by hooks a on one section engaging eyes I) on the other section. F F are handles on the lower section, for convenience in lifting and carrying the coop. Gr is a hinged door covering a hole, 9, through which access is had into the interior of the coop.
By attaching the ends to the top or to the opposite side to that to which the sides are secured permits the said sides and ends to lie 'flat upon' their bearing-surfaces, instead of either the ends or the sides having to bfeiso attached as to permit one or the other to overlap, as heretofore constructed.
The eye-screws, being adjustable, assist in the attachment of the sides and ends, in such a manner as to suit the distance between the attaching-bars and the bearing-surfaces of the top and bottom respectively.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bottom D, provided with sides E, in combination with the top B, provided with ends A, said sides and ends being hinged, by means of eye-screws, to said bottom and top respectively, substantially in the manner described.
2. The eye-screws forming an adjustable attachment for said sides and ends, in combination with 'the bottom D, sides E, top B, and ends A, as set forth.
DANIEL M. SULLIVAN.
