SWING,
Application led July 30,
My invention relates to improvements in swings, and the object of my improvement is to provide a swing which also includes the feature of an elongated carrier -particularly for cliildrens use,'but which may be employed as an amusement for adults.
Another object of my improvements is tok so shape the carrier member or device of the swing as to prevent any collisions thereof with the ground or surface below, while rendering the seats thereof more lreadily accessible to be mounted or for persons to leavey the same' than other ydevices ofL this class.
Another object of my improvements is to construct the carrier member or device of ad* justably connected sections, whereby 4the swing may be adjusted with a longer or shorter length of the carrier, or to permit the latter to have opposite parts of unequal lengths to balance persons seated upon said parts, who may differ in weight.
' Another object is to supply means whereby `the carrier may be swung by either the perand to include resilient means operative upon theV carrier during its actuation in the storing of power. y Another object is to so constructthe car-4 rier part of the swing that several persons may be seated on each" end part thereof, with provision' madealso for them as hand and feet supports thereon. Y
These objectsvI have accomplished by the Vmeans which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichFig. 1 is a view, partly in side elevation. and partly'in medial longitudinal section, of my invention. Fig. 2 is a. top plan of the swing. A
My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described," nor to the various details thereof, as the same may be modified or rearranged in various particulars without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, one practical embodiment of which has been herein illustrated and described without attempting to show all of the various forms and modificationsy in which my invention'might be embodied.
The numeraly 2 denotes a pair of tubular standards, spaced transversely, and having theirl lower ends rigidly stepped as in an afford a measure for 1927.V serial No. 209,545.
ancho'ringlcross blockl of concrete embedded in the'soil. v f v v Onthe top of Veach standard 2 may be fixed an inwardly directed elbow3 to re-` ceive across tube 4,'thus providing a rigid supporting framefor the swinging carrier device' therebetween. Upon each end part ofthel cross tube 4 is rockingly mounted a shortstrong sleeve 5 having a surrounding flange the lower part 6 of which flange is widened radially and across and apertured to receive the lbentlover upper terminations of three dependingzrods :7, the'middle one normally vertical and the rods to front and rear thereof Ldiverging therefrom downwardly. Y
A carrier structure is fixed upon-the lower ends of these divergent rods 7 at the sides,
the construction of the carrier being of any desired kind without departing fromr my. in ventiombut one practical embodiment isillustrated which includes thesevera'l novelties of the invention. A i
This structure includes transversely spaced pairs of arcuate angle bars 12 at each end of the carrier 'connected by bolts .15 Ato the abutting'and overlapping ends'f-of a pair of transversely spaced medial angle bars 13,a' .number -of bolt-'holes 14' being provided in the latter alined Ylongitudinally vto permit of relative longitudinal"adjustments between A the bars, V 12 and 13, so that the `whole struc ture may. be varieilin its length, or ani-adjustment made whereby `the/.bars '.12 ,onV one end 'of the structure are retractedy inwardly only, so as to render thevstructure balanced whenV the persons seated on opposite parts ythereof are of different combined weights.
The lower vend of the middle rods 7` are threaded to enter holes in the top flanges of thel angle bars 13 and secured by nuts. The same securing means are'provid'ed for the outer anddivergent rods 7 lto secureV them tothe outer-bars 12. Flat bars 16n1ay be fastened across the outer ends of the upper i faces of the angle bars 12, and these may carry theseat or bench elements 17 which may be of any desired length to seat a number of persons side by side thereon, and cross-ribs 18 may be fixed on the benches lto preventing side slip Vfor those seated.
VVA cross-bar 21 is also fixed across eachv be found desirable.
are adjustably fitted and secured by wingscrews or set screws. ll, and projecting from the opposite parts ot said sleeves are iiXed arms 9 terminally apertured to seat the ends of hand-bars 10, which may `be gri sped by persons seated on said seats 17. These sleeves 8 may be quickly adjusted in position up or down on said rods 7 to suit the convenience of the seated. persons.
Relatively long coiled tension springs 23 are connected at each side between headed pins 24 fixed near the base on the inner face of each standard 2 and eye-bolts 22 secured to the angle-bars er preferably as shown to the cross-bars 2l. Pull-ropes 2O may be connected to opposite` ends of vthe svi-'inging struct-ure, whereby persons standingnear may start the devicefin operation swinging. Persons seated on the device will operate the swinging carrier by body i'novements as usual, being supported in such movements by the adjustable handbars 10. It will beVV observed .that the arcuate swinging bars 12 13 always `clear the surface of the ground below, so that there is no interference notwithstanding a Wide scope of swinging.
The device as shown, is a strongly braced, relatively light skeleton structure, both in the supports and in the swinging device. Being constructed of stock shapes in most particulars, with little labor cost other than in assembling, the device is relatively inexpensive. The oppositely tensionable springs 2B permit a storage of power which equalizes the action of the swing, and perpetupersons desist from efforts. 1
As this invention may be constructed with different dimensions and modifications within the scope of allowable mechanic-al equivalents, the device may be provided for use as lawn, playground or play room, or porch swings, also for miniature doll swings, or otherwise ern loyed in any manner as may ates the' swinging longer when the seated Having described my invention, whatrI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters vstandards and said structure, and mounted.
to act oppositely on saidy structure.
2. ln combination, supporting standards, an adjustable elongated sectional. skeleton frame structure swingingly supported thereon, said structure being composed of spacedv arcuate side bars and each .side bar having adgustably connected sections, seats on opposite parts `of said structure, and resilient vmeans connected to opposite parts of the structure to exert tensions thereon in either of opposite directions relative to certain. directions of movements of the structure.
3. In combination, supporting standards connected rigidly at their tops by a cross member, sleeves roeltingly mounted on said cross member, end and medial rods depend` ing divergently` from said sleeves, and an elongated sectional longitudinally adjustable skeleton frame structure suspended on the lower ends of said rods, consisting of a medial and end sections adjustably connected together with. the medial rods connectedv medially to and supporting said medial sections whereby said structure with said rods and sleevesl provide a rigidly framed device.
4. In combination, supportingstandards, an relongated eurvate structure consist-ing of parallel sets of connected sect-ions longitudinally adjustable -swingingly supported thereon, and seats on the opposite parts of said structure with means for swinging the structure. Y
in testimony whereof I affix my signature.
