This invention relates to in'iprovements in lubricating devices especially adapted for use in connection with journal bearings, and has for an object the provision of means for feeding a lubricant to a journal of this or any other character, by means of capillary attraction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which may be rclnovably placed within a journal box for engagement with a journal, and which will deliver lubricant to the journal as long as any lubricant remains within the box.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includesthe following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of a journal box within which is shown a journal 11. x
The invention which may be removably or permanently secured within the journal box comprises spaced substantially U-shaped resilient members 12. These members comprise base portions 13 which are shaped to fit the bottom of the box and from which extend arms 16.
The upper extremities of the arms extend inwardly and have secured thereto theopposite ends of the permanent bar 17. Extending from opposite ends of the bars 17 are brackets 18. One of these brackets is provided with an opening 19 while the other bracket is provided with a bayonet slot 20. These brackets are adapted to removably support a locking bar 21 and for this purpose the opposite ends of the bar are provided with lugs 22, one of which enters the opening 19 and the other the slot 20. The construction is duplicated upon opposite sides of the journal 11 and defines a holder at opposite sides of the journal.
These holders are adapted to grip an absorbent material indicated at 23, which may consist of waste coiled in spool fashion, but it is preferred to use wool, cotton or wool and cotton mixed yarn stitched together to provide a proper thickness to be clamped between the bars 17 and 21 and of a length proportionate to the length of the holders.
In order to securely grip the absorbent material the bars 21 are corrugated along one of their edges as shown at 24: so as to provide grippin points which extend toward the bars 1 The upper portions of the absorbent materials are yieldingly forced into contact with opposite sides of the journal 11 by the spring action of the arms 16, while the lower portions of the absorbent materials extend downward into the bottom of the journal box which may have a suitable amount of lubricant therein.
The device has extending from one end rightangularly-shaped handles 25, by means of which it may be conveniently positioned within or removed from the box, the handles acting to aid in spreading the parallel hold ers so as to receive the journal.
The device may be made in sizes suitable for journals of different characters and While shown and described in connection with a railway car journal, it is obvious that its use is not limited in this respect.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims. Having described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A lubricating device for journal bearings comprising a frame adapted to be positioned within a journal box, said frame including parallel bars adapted to be positioned upon opposite sides of a journal, brackets extending at right angles from opposite ends of the bars, and locking bars removably mounted in the brackets and defining holders, absorbent material carried by the holders and adapted to engage opposite sides of the journal and to extend downward within the box, and means to yieldingly force the material into contact with the journal.
