PORTABLE ROTARY ASSEMBLY.
Application led September 15, 1926. Serial No. 135,641.
ln portable drilling machines heretofore in use, the cathead shaft and draw-works which are placed above the main driving shafts, were driven by upwardly extending chains from a shaft ont of the direct line of pull of the cable supporting the drilling tools. rllhis construction resulted in a severe strain on the shaft, drawworks, frame, et cetera, and fre quently resulted in the breaking of the parts.
An object of my invention is to provide an alinement of the various'driving shafts from the source of power to the rot-ary table or the like.
Another object is to drive the draw-works and cathead shaft by upwardly extending chains, said chains exerting a downward pull opposite to the pull of the drilling tools supporting cable. j

Referring more particularly to the drawings:
My portable rotary assembly 1 comprises a frame 2 and a draw-works frame 3 secured thereto. An internal combustion engine 4 is mounted on the frame 2 and extends transversely thereof. A power shaft 5 is journaled in bearings 6, 6 on the frame 2 and a driving shaft 7 extends parallel to the shaft 5 forwardly thereof, and is journaled in bearings 8, 8 on the frame 2.
The shaft 5 is driven from the engine 4 by chains 9 encircling sprockets 10 and 11 on the en ine and power shafts, respectively. The driving shaft 7 is driven from the power shaft 5 through the gear train 12, 12 or the chain 13, depending on which direction of rotation is desired. The gear train 12 and chain 13 are controlled by clutches 14, 15, respectively, so that either may be operated at will.
A driving sprocket 16 is secured to the end of the shaft 7 and a chain 17 encircles said sprocket and a sprocket 18 on the driving shaft 19 of the rotary table 20. The shafts 19, 7, 5 and motor shaft 4', are in substantial alinement so that the pull of the chains 9 and 17 are opposite to each other, resulting in a materially, lessened strain on the aforesaid shafts, and the journals thereof. Also this arrangement enables less chain to be used in the driving mechanism.
The draw-works 21 are journaled on the frame 3 and are rotated by means of the chain 22, which encircles sprockets 23, 2-1 on the shaft 7 and draw-works 21, respectively. lhc chain 22 exerts a downward pull on the drawworks 21 which pull is opposite to, and in line with, the cable, (the letter C) extending to the drilling tools over the derrick crown block. Again this arrangement compensates for the upward pull of the cable and results in less strain on the draw-works and frame.
The cathead shaft 25, also journaled on the frame 3 is driven by the chain 26, encir cling sprockets 27, 28 on the shafts 7, 25, respectively. The downward pull of the chain 2G compensates for the upward pull of the cable on the cathead shaft in the same manner as previously described for the drawworks 21. A sand reel 29 mounted on the braces 30 of the frame 3 is driven by the chain 31 from the cathead shaft 25.
It is to be understood that the rotary table 2O may be directly mounted on the frame 2 or may be separated therefrom on the iioor of the derrick as-desired. My portable machine is mounted on the tractors 32, the de# tails of which form no part of this invention. The operation and advantages of my portable rotary assembly is evident from the foregoing description. j
The separate driving chain 26 for the cathead shaft 25, enables said shaft through suitable clutch arrangement on the shaft 7 to be rotated only when desired by the operator. This feature teliminates the danger of a constantly rotating shaft above the operators head.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a portable rotary drilling rig an engine on said rig, a power shaft, a chain drive ext-ending from said engine to the power shaft, a driving shaft, means operatively con necting said power and driving shafts, a rotary table adjacent the drilling rig, a drive chain extending from said driving shaft to the rotary table, said first named and last named drive chains being substantially in alinement.
2. In a portable rotary drilling rig power means on said rig, drive shafting on said rig, drive means extending from said power means to the shaft-ing, a rotary table adjacent the drilling rig, drive means extending from said shafting to the rotary table, said irst named and last named driving means being substantially in alinement, a draw-works on said rig, and drive means extending upwardly from said shafting, said last named drive means being substantially in alinement with the tool cable extending from said draww0rks.`
3. In a portable rotary drilling rig an engine on said rig, a power shaft, a chain drive extending from said engine to the power shaft, a driving shaft means operatively connecting said power and driving shafts, a rotary table adjacent the drilling rig, a drive chain extending from said driving shaft to the rotar table, said first and last named drive chalns being substantially in alinement, a draw-works on said rig. a driving chain extending upwardly rom the driving shaft to the draw-works, said last named driving chain being substantially in alinement with the cable extending to the rotary tools.
.4. In a portable rotary drilling rig an engine on said rig, a power shaft and a driving shaft, driving means connecting said power and driving shafts, a driving chain extending from said engine to the power shaft, a rotar ing elsiain extending from said riving shaft to the rotary table, said first and last named chains being substantially in alinement, a draw-works, a driving chain extending from said driving shaft to the draw-works, said last named driving chain being substantially in alinement with the cable extendingr to the drilling tools, a cathead shaft and a driving chain extending upwardly from the driving shaft to the cathead shaft.
