DEVICE FOR WBINGERS.

This invention relates to feed devices for use in feeding clothes or other goods to wring-ere.
The objects of this invention are to provide a feed device of this kind which is ethcient and reliable in operation and easy to operate and which includes a swinging feed member which is constructed to feed goods to all parts of the wringer rolls; also to provide a feed device of this kindnwhich is flexibly mounted in the wringer frame to enable any portion of the feed device to move into rorrect feeding relation to any portion of the wringer rolls; alsoto provide a feed device of this kind with means of iniproved construction for preventing the rolls from gripping or binding on the feed device; also to improve the construction of feed devlces this kind in other respects hereinafter speci- In the accompanying drawings- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wringer showing my device applied thereto.

1 indicates the frame of a wringer of any suitable construction provided with the usual upper and lower rollers 2 and 3. t is a hearing bracket secured to one of the vertical members of the frame and so formed as to utilize the usual securing bolts a and. 6 of .35 the frame for securing the bracket thereto.
The bracket 4: is provided with lugs 7 between which a curved link member 8 is pivotally secured at one end by a vertical bolt 9. The link 8 is substantially arc-shaped in form and provided intermediately of its length on its inner or concaved face with a bearing lug 10 and a teat 11.
12 is an arm or bar member provided with lugs 13 and 14lextending above and below the to lug 10 of the link 8 and pivotally secured thereto by means of a vertical belt or screw 18.
It will be noticed particularly on referring to Figure 2 that the link is so formed :0 that the outer end thereof extending beyond the lug 10 forms a stop finger 8 against which the outer face of the arm 12 may have hearing engagement.
The arm 12 in cross section may be appronimately inthe form of a right angular triangle, the base of which extends horizontally substantially on a line with the point of contact between the upper and lower rollers 2 and 3 of the wringer and thereby forming a triangular rib the apex 12 of which engages the wet clothes applied to the face of the wringer rollers so as to force the clothes therebetween as hereinafter more particu larly explained.
The arm 12 is recessed longitudinally as indicated at 13, the base of the recess being provided with a longitudinal drain slot 14*.
. 15 is an anti-friction roller mounted. within the recess 13 between the ends 16 and 17 of the longitudinal recess 13, the ends of the roller being preferably recessed as indicated at 18 and a screw 19 screwed into the orifice 20 formed in each of the ends 16 and 17 so as to project inwardly therefrom into the recess 18 and thereby journal the roller 15 at its ends so as to freely revolve within the recess 18. Other means for journaling the rollers 15 011 the arm 12 may be provided if desired.
The outer end of the arm 12 is provided with a handle 12 by which the arm may be swung toward and from the wringcr rollers as desired.
In manipulating my device the clothes are picked up from the washing machine and the upper portion thrown over the arm 12 so as to extend from the inner side of the arm over the roller 15 and isheld at its end in this position with the one hand, while the operator grasps the handle 12 and swings the arm inward towards the wringer rollers. The article is thereby forced by the blunt edge or apex 12 in between the rollers until it is gripped thereby.
In order that the arm 12 will assume a parallel position to the rollers 2 and 3 1 provide the inner end of the arm 12 with a lug 19 provided. with a teat 19 between which and the teat 11 hereinbefore described extends a compression spring 21. hen the arm is swung inward to engage the article as above described'the inner end of the arm as illustrated in Figure 2 first engages the article and swings on this point as a fulcrum cempressing the spring 21 permitting the arm to swing inward at its outer end to a parallel positionwith the rollers 2 and 8 so that the article of clothing is forced evenly between the rollers from one end thereof to the other. By mounting the arm 12 on two pivots 9 and 13* and the link 8, this arm can assume different positions relatively to the rolls of the wringer so that by pressing on the handle portion 12? articles may be pressed into engagement with the wringer rolls at any portion of the length thereof and because a of the action of the spring 19 and the pressure exerted by the operator on the handle 12 the feeding arm will be pressed toward the wringer rolls at both ends thereof. Consequently if a comparatively thick article is placed [on the feeding arm near the pivot thereof and a comparatively thin article near the outer end of the feeding arm, the arm will upon pressure of the hand on the handle 12 assume a position in which both the thick andthe thin articles will be fed between the wringer rolls. The roller 15 is so positioned as to engage with at the upper wringer rolls 2 to prevent the edge portion 12 of the feeding arm from becoming jammed between the rolls.
If desired the arm 12 may be made in the form of an equal-lateral or isosceles triangle in cross section, or of other cross sectional shape, and a roller corresponding to the roller 15 provided above and below the arm.
Also the arm might be made independent .of the machine in the form of a bar and provided with a handle centrally of its length which is held by the operator so that the clothes supported upon the a m may be forced in between the rollers in the same manner as above described.
From this description it will be seen thatI have devised a very simple device which will readily allo w of the clothes being inserted between the rollers of a power driven wringer without any danger of the fingers of the operator being caught therebetween and injured.
7 lVhat-I claim as my invention is 1. A feed device for wringers having rolls, including an arm adapte'd' to receive articles to be fed to said rolls, a link pivotally connected to one end of said arm to enable said arm and link to swing horizontally relatively to each other, a fixed support to which said link is, pivoted to swing horizontally, and
'a spring connecting said link and said arm exerting pressure against said arm and said link to swing said arm in one direction relatively to said link, and a stop to limit the extent to which said spring swings said arm and link relatively to each other, whereby said arm may be moved into different feeding relations to said rolls. r
3. A feed device for wringers having rolls journalled on a frame, including a link pivotally mounted on said frame to swing horizontally thereto, a feed arm pivotally mounted on said link to swing horizontally into and out of feeding relation to said wringer rolls, a spring which yieldingly holds said feed arm in definite relation to said link, and stop means for limiting the extent to which said spring swings said link and arm relatiy'ely to each other, whereby said arm may assume different feeding relations to said rolls.
4. A feed device for wringers having rolls, comprising an elongated member having a relatively thin side edge over any portion of which articles to be wrung may be draped and fed to said rolls, a cylindrical roller disposed lengthwise along said member and substantially co-extensive in length with said edge, said roller being mounted on said member for rotation, with its periphery projecting from one of the faces leading to said edge, whereby when said articles are fed to said rolls by said edge, the roller will contact with one of said rolls and arrest the member before the edge portion thereof is caught by said rolls.
5. A feed device for a wringer having rolls, comprising an arm having a hinge for attachment tosaid wringer in a manner to swing into and outof a position in which it extends approxin'iately parallel and adjacent to said rolls, the side of said arm towards said rolls being relatively thin for a distance approximately co-extensive with the length of said rolls, and with said edge in feeding relation to said rolls, whereby articles to be wrung may be draped over any portion of said edge and fed to said rolls, and a roller rotatably mounted on said arm and extending lengthwise along said arm, adjacent to but spaced from said edge, the periphery of said roller projecting from said arm in a manner to engage one of the rolls, upon movement of said arm towards said rolls, and arrest such movement before said edge is caught between said rolls.
6. A feed device for a wringer having rolls comprising an arm having a double hinge for attachment to said wringer in a manner to swing about one hinge into and out of a position in which it extends approximately parallel and adjacent to said rolls, and also about the other hinge to tilt endwise and bring either end portion nearer the rolls than the other end portion, the side of said arm towards said rolls being relatively thin for a distance approximately coextensive With the length of said rolls, and with said edge in feeding relation to said rolls, whereby articles to be wrung may be draped over any portion of said edge and fed to said rolls, and a roller rotatably mounted on said arm and extending lengthwise along said arm, adjacent to but spaced from said edge, for a distance approximately coextensive with the length of before said edge is caught between said rolls.

A feed device for a wringer having rolls, comprising an arm having a double hinge for attachment to said wringer in a manner to swing about one hinge into and out of a position in which it extends approximately parallel and adjacent to said rolls, and also about the other hinge to tilt endwise and bring either end portion nearer the rolls than the other end portion, a spring associated with said other hinge and yieldingly urging said arm in a direction to carry its free end away from said rolls, the side of said arm towards said rolls being relatively thin for a distance approximately co-extensive with the length of said rolls, and with said edge in feeding relation to said rolls, whereby articles to be wrung may be draped over any portion of said edge and fed to said rolls, and a roller rotatablymounted on said arm and extending lengthwise along said arm, adjacent to but spaced from said edge for a distance approximately co-extensive with the length of said rolls the periphery of said roller projecting from said arm in a manner to engage one of the rolls, upon movement of said arm towards said rolls and arrest such movement before said edge is caught between said rolls.
8. A feed device for a wringer having rolls, comprising an arm having a double hinge for attachment to said wringer in a manner to swing about one hinge into and out of a position in which it extends approximately par allel and adjacent to said rolls,and also about the other hinge to tilt endwise and bring,
either end portion nearer the rolls than the other end portion, a spring associated with said other hinge and yieldingly urging said arm in a direction to carry its free end away from said rolls, said other hinge and arm having cooperating stop portions limiting movement of saidarm by said spring, the side of said arm towards said rolls being relatively thin for a distance approximately co-exten- ,sive with the lengthof said rolls, and with said edge in feeding relation to said rolls, whereby articles to be wrung maybe draped over any portion of said edge and fed to said rolls, and a roller rotatably mounted on said arm and extending lengthwise along said arm, adjacent to butspaced from said edge, for a distance approximately co-extensive with the length of said rolls, the periphery of said roller projecting from said arm in a manner to engage one of the rolls, upon movement of said arm towards said rolls, and arrest such movement before said edge is caught between said rolls.
9. A feed device for wringers having rolls, comprising a feeding arm having a relatively thin feeding edge extending lengthwise along one side of said arm, hinge means attached to one end of said arm and mounting said arm for swinging movement in a direction to carry said edge toward and from the wringing line of contact between saidrolls, and also forindependent endwise tilting toward and from said rolls, and roller means carried by said arm substantially co-extensive with the length of said edge and projecting from a face of said arm in a manner to contact with one of said rolls and arrest swinging movement of said arm towards said rolls before said edge iscaught betweensai d rolls.
