LOCOMO'IIIIVE ENGINE.
` Application led June 26, '1925. Serial No. 39,675.
and unusual integral construction of the midf dle or cent-ral cylinder, the side frames and the boiler cylinder saddle.
ln one practical embodiment of the invention, l provide in the form of a single integralcasting, the two front side frames and the middle or central cylinder with its valve chest and the boiler cylinder saddle extending above the engine cylinder. Provision is inadeon said side frames for the connection of the side cylinders therewith preferably in line with the central or middle cylindertransverscly of the structure whereby 'said central cylinder and its integral connection with the side frames rigidly reinforces and strengthens the side frames against the mechanical stresses induced by the weight of the side cyl inders and their valve chests.
ldiththe above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved locomotive engine structure and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts as will. be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and subsequently incorporated in the subi oined claims.
ln the drawing, wherein I have illustrated one simple and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,-
lligure 1 is a vertical transverse section taken substantially on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, and
Fig` 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 2m?, of Fig. l..
Referring in detail to the illustrated ein bodiment of the invention, the two parallel side frames 5 which have heretofore been separately formed or cast, a're in the present instance cast as a single integral structure, said side frames intermediate of their ends separate side cylinders each having a vertically extending substantially rectangular portion 6. These intermediate portions of the side frame members are integrally connected with the central or middle engine cylinder 7 by means of the transverse wall or web 8 and below said cylinder and also between the side frames 5 the cylinder valve chest 9 is integrally formed with thewall 8. However, while I have herein shown the valve chest as being arranged below the engine cylinder, it will be understood that this valve chest may, if desired, be positioned. above the said cylinder. The integral connecting wall 8 is extended above the cylinder' and is formed with a onepiece saddle 10 in which the front end of the boiler cylinder 1l is seated. and securely bolted thereto in the usual manner. 1 i
Each of the side frames 5 is also` formed with a forwardly projecting bumpercarry ing extension 12 and with a part 18 projecti ng rearwardly of the middle cylinder These rearward extensions 13 of the side 'frames are integrally connected at their upper edges by the horizontally positioned transversely disposed wall or web lll- To each of these rear extensions 13 of the side frames one `of the longitudinal main frame members 15 of the locomotive structure is bolted or otherwise rigidly fir-red atits forward end.
lt -is possible to also cast the side cylinders and their valve chests integral with the side frame members 5, but l preferably employ 16 each having a valve chest and provide each cylinder and valve chest casting on one side thereof with suitable flanges lS whereby said. castings may be mounted upon the outer sides of the intermediate rectangular portion 6 of the respective side frames and rigidly fixed thereto by the bolts indicated as 19 or any other convenient fastening `means which will permit of the easy and quick removal of the side cylinders when necessary without disturbing p the relative arrangement of the side frames 5 or the middle cylinder 7 and boiler saddle 10.
ln a prior application for patent, Fierialv lilo. 723,098, filed June 30. 1924-, now ljatent lila 1,630,901, dated May 31, 1927, l have described and claimed a locomotive iframe structure wherein the side frames including the forward bumper extension and the rear? wardly projecting parts to he bolted to the main frames together with the boiler cylintween the central cylinder and the side frames, thus provides an ample reinforce` ment, securely strengthening and bracing the side vframes lat the point of connection of the two side cylinders 16 therewith so that the sideframes are to a large extent, relieved of the severe mechanical strains or stresses which vwould otherwise-be induced therein owing yto the great weight of the side cylinder and valve chest castings. However, in this respect it will be understood that mypresent invention is not to be necessarily confined to the `specific `disclosure herein contained and that said central cylinder might be otherwise locatedbetween the sider trames'eitlier torwardlyor rearwardly or" the two side cylinders.V .I have not herein shown the steam supply-and exhaust connections for the several engine cylinders7 since this is a. matter of sound engineering judgment and constitutes no essential part of my present improvements.
It lwill be apparent to those who are familiar Ywith modern'locomotive design that by means of my present invention the ordinary two cylinder locomotive may be readily converted into one of the three cylinder type by merely, substitutingthe front frame casting consisting of two side frames integrally connected by the central cylinder for the ordinary front frame and boiler cylinder saddle as heretofore provided.
' It-fwill be understood that the form of the twosideframes and the side cylinder castings as herein illustrated is merely suggestive, and that these parts may be produced in various forms, shapes and dimensions as may be deemed most desirable in accordance with the particular type of locomotive which is equipped with my present invention. It is therefore, to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resort-ing to all such legitimate changes in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts as may be fairly embodied within the spirit, and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
l. In a locomotive engine of the three cylinder type, an integral structure comprising a middle cylinder, side frame members extending forwardly and rearwardly therefrom on opposite sides thereof, and a boiler seat saddle extending vertically above the middle cylinder; and side cylinders detachably secured upon the outer sides of said side frame members in transverse alignment with said middle cylinder.
2. In a locomotive engine, a one piece integral st-ructure consisting of side frame members integrally connected intermediate of their ends by a transversely extending vertically positioned web and an engine cylinder and valve chest integrally formed with said web.
3. In a locomotive engine, a one piece integral structure consisting of side frame mem- -bers integrally connected intermediate .of
their ends by a transversely extending vertically positioned web and an engine cylinder and valve chest integrally formed with said web, and a boiler seat saddle integrally formed with the upper end of said web above said cylinder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereto.
JOHN E. MUHLFELD.
