REFERENCE CARD.
application fiiea January 27,'1927. ser-iai No 184.032.
This invention relates to newand useful iinprovements in cards,`and more particularly to a reference card or index card upon which various items or other indicia may be writtenv printed or otherwise iiiseribed for reference purposes.
The primary object ofthe invention re-VV sides in providing a card having` identification data upon its obrerse face and provid- :ed with a pocket adapted .to receive therein --a separab'le slip; such .asa metal7 paper or cardboard strip, bearing'upon its obverse surface cosrelative data which is visible through a. recess provided the edge of ti e card and the inouth of the poclet and which is visible when the slip is inscrted in ie pocket.
walls of the pocket at the inouth thereof in a,
manner which will permt a separable eleinent to be readily and freely inserted or withdrawn from said pocket.
A still further object resides in providing;
' a device which is Simple and durable in corstruction, inexpensive to manufacture, eilicient in use and capable of application to various uses.
VVith these and other objects in view,,ourinvention consists in tlie novel; features ofV construction, combination and arrangeinent of parts, as will be hereinafter referi'ed to and more particularly pointed out in the specificat-ion and claims. i
In the acconipanying drawing` foriniiig` a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a card con structed in accordance with our invention, the auxiliary element being shown removed from the pocket of the card;
Figure 2 is a transverse section as seen on tlie line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an elevation of a blank in outspread position prior to formation of a modified form of the card; and
Figure 4 is a front elevation of a further niodification of the invention-- In describing the inveiition, we shall refer .to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate eorresponding parts throughout the several views and iii'which 1V .designates acard of any preferred size or shape adapted forV various purposes, such as an index or referenvce card, the same being forined of two or more laminations or layers. Adjacent onefend of said card and ex-` tending inwardly from one edge thereof, a poclret 2 forined: by separating the layers or laminat-ions. wardly from the one edge of the card .and inay bbe of any desired Width and length but preferably terminates short Vof the .edge of the card opposed to thatifrom which the -inouth of said pocket is formed.
As a reference card or the like, various data lmay be written, .printed or otherwise inscribed thereon and we provide in connection withthis card a strip 8 which may be formed of paper, card board or metal which This pocket extends in-' is adapted to be inserted and received inthe poclet 2. This strip or auxiliary element is adapted to have data printed, written, im-
pressed or otherwise inscribed thereon which is co-related to the data contained oii the face of the card 1. Thus, the auxiliary elemeiit 3 may at all times be carried in direct association with the card 1 to which'it is related. i o
One wall of the pocket 2 at the inouth thereof is cut away arcuately as shown by the numeral 4 and the other wall thereof is shown by the iiunieral 5. The cut away porv tions of the walls enable the ,strip or element 3 to be readily grasped by the index finger and thumb and removedV from the pocketl and the cuttingaway of one wall to a lesser eXtent than the otherprovides obviously, a backing or guide means to enable the strip or element 8 to be readily and quickly inserted in the pocket when desired.
As shown in F igures 1 and 2, the pocket 'is formed by separating the laminations or layers of the card l1 after the latter has been cut. A modified form of this invention is disclosed in Figure 3 wherein a blank or strip 6 is provided having its one edge' adjacent one end cut away arcuately as showncat 7. Correspondingly the last-mentioned edge of the blank adjacent the opposite'cnd is out away to a greater extent as shown at 8. This blank 6 is adapted to be folded along the dotted line 9 and the two halves of the blank Secured together on their inner opposed faces by means of an adhesive,
or otherwise as desired. Those port-ions of the tWo inner opposed faces of the folded elements of the blank extending inwardly from the out-away portions 7 and 8 are not secured together and thus Will permit' the pocket to.be formed between the folded elements.
A further modified form of the invention is discloscd in Figure 4 in which a card 10 is provided having applied to one face thereof adjacent its one end an outer pocket member 11. rl`he mouth of the pocket is formed in themanner described and shown in connection with the other forms of the device. Various other modificationsV of this invention "may be provided.
the the Fromthe foregoing description of construction of our improved devlce,
` manner of constructing` and applying the same to use will be readily understood.
t Will be seen also that We have provided a simple, inexpensive and cfiicient means for carrying out the purposes of the invention and While We have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, various changes in form, proportion andV in the minor details of construction may be resorted to7 Within the scope of the appended claim, Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
VVhat We claino is:
A card cornposedy of confronting plies of material having juxtaposed surfaces intilnately joined With each other over portions of their areas and leaving disjoined portions of thcirareas' forming a pocket leading in from the edge of the card, said card being` provided With identification data appearing upon its obverse face, saidl card having at .its edge and at the mouth of the pocket a recess, and a slip adapted to enter said pocliet and fill the same and having` upon its obverse face identification data corelative With the data upon the card, the
data upon the slip being visible through the recess When the slip is enclosed in the pocket.
In testnnony Whcreof We affiX our signatures.
