The present invention relates to plaiting machines in which an upper and a lower knife are pivotally mounted on a common axle and are reciprocated towards and away from the drums in a forward and a backward stroke.
In the known machines of this type, the lever causin the pivotation of the knives is controlled by a cam provided with removable bosses, in such manner that according as the said lever makes cont-act with a raised or a concave cam portion, the knives will assume the upper or lower position, or inversely.
According to the present invention, the pivotation of the said knives is effected by means of a member positively driven which causes said knives to be pivoted towards one of the drums during one of said strokes against the action of yielding means urging constantly said knives towards the other drum, means bein; adapted to relieve the knives from the action of the member positively driven.
The said relieving means may be controlled by a cam provided with fixed or removable bosses, known per se.

The upper andlower knives of the machine, 1-2, are supported by the checks 3 and are given a reciprocating motion by these latter, whereby they are moved from or towards the drums l and The cheeks 3 together with the knives 1 and 2 are pivotally mounted on the axle (3, so that the said knives may slide upon the upper forming plate 7 or on the lower "forming plate 8. The pivoted plate 10 is actuated by a lever 15 pivoted upon an axle 16 and connected with the plate 10 by means of the sliding member 17 whose position may be adjusted in the slot 18 of the plate 10. The lever 15 is controlled by the spring 19 in such manner that the roller 20 mounted on this lever will make contact with the rotatable cam 21having a continuous out line. The said cam has two curved parts, one of which a-b-ewhich is relatively nearer the centre of the caimiwhilst the other part a(Z-c is farther removed, the construction beingsuch that when the roller 20 makes contact withthe respective curved parts of the cam, the knives l and 2 will, be raisedor lowered. The speed of rotation of the cam 21 is regulated in such manner thatthe outline a-b-c will correspond to the forward motion of the knives towards the drums 4 5, and that the outline ad-c will correspond to the back motion of the said knives with reference to the drums. y

catch, the machine will constantly produce overlapping plaits. To obtain overlapping or underlapping plaits as desired, the hook 22 is movably mounted on the axle 23 so that it may make contact with the catch 24 or may move out of contact therewith.
However, the hook may be placed in or out of contact with the catch 24 by means of cams provided with fixed or movable bosses, wherey we may obtain a succession of plaits in a stated order so as to produce various patterns on the fabric. For this purpose, the sleeve 26 carrying a contact roller 27 is slidable 0n the axle 23. The said roller may be made to coincide with one of the cams 28, 29, 30, 31 mounted on the axle 32 which is parallel with the axle H3, or it may be placed in the space The said cams may be provided with removable bosses, and they are preferably constructed according to the U. S. Patent No. 1,612,500. The said cams may also consist of discs with fixed bosses. In this manner, a disc may offer alternately a boss and a concave part in order to obtain box plaits. When the roller 17 makes contact with a concave part, the hook 522 is engaged with the catch 24, but when the said roller engages a raised part, said book will be released from the catch. The cams such as 28, 29, 80, 31 may be used in any suitable number, and in this manner the plaits will succeed one another in any desired order. For instance, if box pla-its are to be formed, the roller 27 is made to coincide with a cam having alternately a boss and a concavity. When the roller 27 is brought into the space between any two cams, the hook 22 under the control of the spring 26 will engage the catch 24, so that the machine constantly produces underlapping pla-its. The roller 27 may be operated by a lever 33 which is pivoted to the sleeve 26 and is pivotally mounted on a ball joint 34 (or the like) by which the lever may turn upon dif' ferent axes. The said lever may beheld in the respective positions of the roller 27, by means of a sector having the notches 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 in which the lever can be fastened. The notches 36 to 39 correspond to the respective cams 28, 29, 30, 31, whilst the notch 35 corresponds to a lower position of the roller 27 in which the hook 22 engages the catch 24.
'Between the notches, the sector comprises the raised parts 40, so that in passing from one notch to another, the lever is obliged to pass over the raised parts and it accordingly rotates the sleeve 26, and the roller 27 is thus raised out of contact with the cams 28 to 31. Vith the roller 27 in the raised position, the lever 33 can be used to bring the said roller into any position without meeting with the cams.
The controlling lever 33 may in turn be automatically controlled by a cam of suitable outline.
The plaiting machine herein specified has many advantages over the known plaiting machines, which may be stated as follows:
1. The oscillating motion of the knives is obtained by the control of a cam which has a continuous outline and is given a regular rotation, thus providing for the positive control of the knives, and we are thus enabled to optionally eliminate the elastic combination 18, 14:. The bosses on the cam 21 may be as considerable as desired, and this al'li'ords the rcduction of the lever gear which was necessary when the lever 15 was controlled directly by a cam with removable bosses. The position of the knives is controlled by the complete rotation of the cam 21, and not as in the machines employing a cam provided with bosses and having an intermittent rotary motion, by a rotation through a very small angle corresponding to half the angular distance between two successive bosses, and we thus obviate the shocks in the machine, so that it will operate 1n a very easy manner.
2. The cams provided with bosses 28 to 31 which control the movable tappet and havd an ntermittent motion. are moved only once dur ng a complete stroke of the knives, i. 0. during the forward and backward motion of the said knives.
3. It is no longer necessary to provide empty spaces between two successive removable bosses, so that these bosses may be placed side by side, whereby we are enabled to reduce the diameter or the cam provided with bosses, or to increase the number of such bosses by 1ncreasing the number of combinations.
4. The said bosses may have a relatively small size, for in the present machine, the bosses serve only to release the stop 22. whilst n the known machines the bosses must pro- ]ect considerably from the surface, sin cc they must provide for the whole amount oi. motion of the knives.
5. The machine need not be stopped in order to change the combinations, since the roller 27 may be placed at will, and without obstacle, in coincidence with any desired earn.
(3. lVithout modifying any of the combinations formed on the cams provided with the removable bosses, we may produce overlapping or underlapping plaits respectively by placing the controlling lever 33 upon the pio- 1ecting parts 40 or by lowering the said lever in the notch 35 so as to bring the book 22 into engagement with the stop 2st.
Obviously, our said apparatus is suiisceptiblc of various modifications without departing trom the spirit of the invention. A
For example, the cam 21, instead of constantly producing overlappinc plaits, may constantly produce underlapping plaits. by inverting the respective positions bf the point of pivotation 11 and of the sliding member 17. In this event, the hook 22 will act noon the catch 24 to produce the overlapping plziits.

Having now describedour invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent is: V
1. In a plaiting machine, the combination of two plaiting upper and lower drums, an upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted to be pivoted with said knives towards the upper and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocated towards and away from the drums in a forward and a backward stroke, elastic means adapted to urge said frame with said knives towards one of said drums, controlling means adapted to pivot said frame with said knives to *ards the other drum against the action of said elastic means, and movable locking means adapted in their operative position to hold permanently said frame with said knives towards said other drum.
2. In a plaiting machine, the combination of two plaiting upper and lower drums, an upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted to be pivoted with said knives towards the upper and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocated towards and away from the drums in a forward and a backward stroke, elastic means adapted to urge said frame with said knives towards one of said drums, controlling means adapted to pivot said frame with said knives towards the other drum against the action of said elastic means during one of said strokes of said frame, and movable locking means adapted in their operativeposition to hold permanently said frame with said knives towards said other drum.

In a plaiting machine the combination of two plaiting upper and lower drums, an upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted to be pivoted with said knives towards the upper and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocatcd towards and away from the drums in a for ntrd. and a backward stroke, a movable lever adapted to raise said frame with said knives towards the upper drum when moved in one direction and to lower said frame with said knives towards the lower drum when moved in the opposite direction, elastic means urging; said lever in one of said directions, a movable member adapted to move said lever in the other of said directions during one of said strokes of said frame, and movable looking means adapted in their operative position to hold permanently said lever in an extreme position corresponding to said other direction. i

7. In a plaiting machine, the combination of two planting upper and lower drums, an
upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted; to be pivoted with said knives towards thevupper, and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocated towards and away from the drums. in a for- 'ward and. a backward stroke, a movable lever rotatable cam with removable bosses adapted to bring said stop piece in its operative and in its inoperative position.

In a plaiting machine, the combination of two plaiting upper and lower drums, an upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted to be pivoted with said knives towards the upper and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocated towards and away from the drums in a forward and a backward stroke, a movable lever adapted to raise saidframe with said knives towards the upper drum when moved in one direction and to lower said frame with said knives towards the lower drum when moved in the opposite direction, elasticmeans urging said lever in one of said directions, a movable member adapted to move said lever in the other of said directions during one of said strokes of said frame, a movable stop piece adapted in its operative position to hold permanently said lever in an extreme position corresponding to said other direction, a number of rotatable cams and means operatively connecting with said stop piece and adapted to be engaged by any one of said rotatable cams.
9. In a plaiting machine, the combination of two plaiting upper and lower drums, an upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted to be pivoted with said knives towards the upper and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocated towards and away from the drums in a forward and a backward stroke, a movable lever adapted to raise said frame with said knives towards the upper drum when moved in one direction and to lower said frame with said knives towards the lower drum when moved in the opposite direction, elastic means urging said lever in one of said directions, a movable member adapted to move said lever in the other of said directions during one of said strokes of said frame, a pivoting axle, a movable stop piece. secured on said axle and adapted in its operative position to hold permanently said lever in an extreme position corresponding to said other direction, rotatable cams mounted in parallel relation with said pivoting axle, a sleeve on said axle adapted to be rotated with said axle and to be moved along said axle, and a contact member carried bysaid sleeve and adapted to be moved with said sleeve into and out of the path of said cams.

In a plaiting machine, the combination of two plaiting upper and lower drums, an upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted to be pivoted with said knives towards the upper and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocated towards and away from the drums in a forward and a backward stroke, a movable lever adapted to raise said frame with said knives towards the upper drum when moved in one direction and to lower said frame with said knives to ards the lower drum when moved in the opposite direction, elastic means urging said lever in one of said directions, a movable member adapted to move said lever in the other of said directions during one of said strokes of said frame, a pivoting axle, a movable stop piece secured on said axle and adapted in its operative position to hold permanently said. lever in an extreme position corresponding to said other direction, ro-
tatable cams mounted in parailel relation with said pivoting axle, a sleeve on said axle adapted to be rotated with said axle and to be moved along said axle, a contact member carried by said sleeve and adapted tobe moved with said sleeve into and out of the path of said cams, and an operating member operatively connected with said sleeve and adapted to be moved in one direction whereby said sleeve is caused to slide on said axle and in another perpendicular direct-ion whereby said sleeve is caused to rotate and to bring said contact member out of the path of said cams.

In a plaiting machine, the combination of two plaiting upper and lower drums, an upper and a lower knife, a pivoted frame supporting said knives and adapted to be pivoted with said knives towards the upper and towards the lower drum and to be reciprocated towards and away from the drums in a forward and a backward stroke, a movable lever adapted to raise said fran'ie with said knives towards the upper drum when moved in one direction and to lower said frame with said knives towards the lower drum when moved in the opposite direction, elastic means urging said lever in one of said directions,'a movable member adapted to move said lever in the other of said directions during one of said strokes of said frame, a pivoting axle, a movable stop piece secured on said axle and adapted in its operative position to hold pern'ianently said lever in an extreme position corresponding to said other direction, rotatable cams mounted in parallel relation with said pivoting axle, a sleeve on said axle adapted to be rotated with said axle and to be moved along said axle, a contact member carried by said sleeve and adapted to be moved with said sleeve into ill!) and out of the path of said cams, an operating member operatively connected With said sleeve and adapted to he moved in one direction whereby said sleeve is caused to slide on said axle and in another perpendicular direction whereby said sleeve is caused to rotate and to bring sald contact member out of the path of said cams and a grooved sector adapted to hold said operating member in its different positions.
