being intended that the withdrawal of the lowermost unit shall draw the next succeeding unit into a position where it, in its turn, can be grasped.

Prior to my invention, such packages have been made in either one of two ways, each of which has certain disadvantages. First, such packages have been made of units consisting of a single sheet of a single thickness of paper. Such a. package has the advantage of economy, in that the units comprise only the amount of paper' actually desired for use. This economy, however, is accompanied by certain inconveniences. For instance, the unit presents an edge for the user to take hold of in drawing it from the cabinet, which edge consists of only a single thick- Hence, when the user is washing his hands and takes hold of the unit with his wet lingers, the `portion of the unit taken hold of will often tear away without withdrawing the unit from the cabinet. Again, where such a package comprises units consisting of but a single sheet of paper' of a single thickness, the unit, being withdrawn, necessarily has a limited and uncertain contact with the next succeeding unit, so that it is not at all cert-ain that the latter unit will,

by the withdrawal of the rst-mentioned unit, be drawn into position where the user can grasp it. Furthermore, with a package of such units, the unit being withdrawn only contacts with the next succeeding unit upon one side of the free edge of the latter, so that such free edge frequently becomes bent awayA from the unit being withdrawn, and curls or crumples up within the Vreceptacle and does notcome into position where the user can get hold of it. Second, such packages have been formed of units consisting of a doubled sheet of two thicknesses of paper. But the latter form of units have been usable only as a whole, which involved the use of twice the amount of paper frequently desired. For instance even with such doubled units it has been customary to direct the user to blot and not rub with the paper towel. This has been because the grain, or line of greatest weakness, so to speak, of the paper commonly used for this purpose, runs all in one direction; and the paper which has to be loose and soft in its texture to have absorbency enough to act as a towel, will, when wet, split or part along the grain if rubbed transversely to the grain. But in my invention the unit can be separated into two sheets, one of which can be placed with its grain crosswise upon the other, and, thus a. towel can be formed having grain in two directions at right angles to each other, and with which the user may rub in the usual and natural way and need not confine himself to a mere blotting process.

My invention possesses the economy of the single sheet form of unit, while overcoming its said disadvantages, and also possesses all the advantages of said second form of unit and gives it marked additional advantage.
