IMPROVEMENT IN GRATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,306, dated November 23, 1875; application filed April 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, J OHN SoHRoEFFEL, J r., of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Place Grates.

My invention will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with theaccompanyingdrawing,wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective rear view of an iron box or frame intended to be inserted and built in the brick-work of an ordinary fire-place, and fitted with a series of independ ent and detachable bars forming the grate, and so arranged with respect to each other and their supporting-frame as to admit of a rectilinearreciprocating movement being imparted thereto by means of such mechanism as will be hereinafter described. Fig. 2 represents a perspective front view of the box or frame, as seen when the grate-bars are removed; Fig. 3, a top view or plan of the same; Fig. 4, a side elevation of one of the grate-bars.

To put my invention into practice, I first construct a metallic quadrangular box or frame, A, which may be set upon legs, or 0therwise so arranged as that, when in place, its bottom will be elevated a short distance above the hearth, to admit of the ashes being removed. In the ends of this frame, and from the top edge downward, are cut a series of deep slots, a a a, and transversely through the center of the box, below the plane of the slots at a a, is

arranged a shaft, 1), bearing a series of oppositely-arranged cranks, d d d. On one end of this shaft, and outside and front of the quadrangular frame, A, is a hand-winch, G, by which a rotating motion may be imparted to said shaft and its system of inside cranks d d d. The several bars 0 e c that, when in place, constitute the grate, are each serrated at their upper edges, and are provided with an enlargement or projection, D, at or near the middle of their lower edge, in which a vertical slot, E, is cut, of a size equaling in width the diameter of the crank-wrists, and of a length a little greater than their throw. When the several grate-bars e e c are set in their respective slots at a a in the frame A, and each with its serrated edges upward, and so that their slots E stride each its appropriate crank-wrist, on motion being imparted to the crank by means of the winch 0, either in a rotary or oscillating direction, the cranks will impart an alternate reciprocating movement to the several bars, or a movement back and forth .each in their respective slots in the supporting-frame, and that in such a manner as to completely loosen and rake out such ashes as may be generated by the burning coal.

I claim- The transverse shaft b, provided with a series of short cranks, d d d, and winch G, in combination with the serrated and slotted grate-bars e e e, substantially in the manner shown, for the purposes set forth.
