This inventionrelates to means for impartlng reciprocatory movement to a slidable member, such as a plunger carrier, and while the invention is particularly adaptedto apl paratus .for packing granulated or comminuted material, such as cork with a binder into stick form, it is also applicable to other apparatus, and it is the object of the invention to provide means tol impart to a slid-able member reciprocatory movement in series of successively decreasing extent. The application is a continuation in part of my co-pending application Serial #179,764, filed March 31, 1927.
In. carrying out the invention I have illustrated the same as embodied in apparatus for packing comminuted cork into stick form wherein a series of tubes are carried in a support therefo-r and successively positioned byv the support with the opposite ends relative to material carrying pockets to which material is fed from a hopper or hoppe-rs, and
' from which pockets the material is delivered and packed into opposite ends of the tubes as successive increments by plungers mounted in reciprocatory carriers in line with the material carrying pockets, the tubes carrier or support being adapted to `be operated after a series of successive movements have been imparted to the plunger carriers and the tubes filled with comminuted material kto advance the filled tubes and position further tubes to be filled relative to thev material carrying pockets.

I haveillustrated my invention in connection with apparatus for packing granulated or commin'uted cork mixed with a binder into tubesto form sticks from which disks are sliced to constitute the lining of closure caps for receptacles as described and illustrated in Patent No. 1,477,358 dated December 11, 1923, wherein a series of tubes 8 are supported at the opposite ends by ka turret comprising a pair of wheels 9 having recesses disposed about the periphery and mounted in spaced relation upon a rotatable shaft 10, and by means of which support the tubes seated in the peripheral recesses are positioned with the ends in line with pockets 11 ar,- ranged in an arc of a circle coinciding withl the tube receiving recesses in the turret wheels, saidv pockets being disposed below hopper outlets 12 to receive material there from. The tube support is intermittently rotated from a drive shaft 13 by a pinion not show-n) on said shaft meshing with a gear 14 fixed to a shaft journaled in a bracket 15 fixed to the base of the framework, a wheel 16v also fixed to said shaft having a section of teeth 17 adapted upon each revolution of said wheel to mesh with a pinion 1S fixed to a shaft journaled iny an upwardly extending portion 19 of the bracket 15, the shaft carrying the pinion 18also having a pinion 20 fixed thereon to mesh with a gear 21 fixed on shaft 10, the ratioand timing of the gearing being such so that the tube carrying support will have an intermittent movement imparted thereto, the distance the supportis moved being the space occupiedk by six notches to move filled'tubes (6 in number) away from the material receiving pockets and position another series of tubes relative to said pockets upon the imparting of a predetermined series of reciprocatory movements to a series of plungers 22 to deliver material' from the pocket 11 into the end of the tubes carried by the support. l The shaft 13 is driven from a drive shaft 23 by a pinion 24 on said latter shaft meshing with a gear`25 on shaft 13'.
'The drive shaft 23 is driven from a suitable source of powerby a belt passing around a pulley 26 loosely ymounted on said shaft and adapted to be connected to said shaft by a clutch mechanism 26 of the ordinary type. The plungers 22 are mounted at one end in a carriage or carrier 27 slidably mounted and guided for reciprocatory movement by two pairs of rollers 28, 29 at the opposite ends of the carrier upon parallel rods 30 fixed in ther frames, one roller of each pair engaging above and the other roller below the rods.. There are two plunger carriers one arranged at the outer side of each series of pockets 11 and as both of said carriers, the mounting and operating means therefor, are the same description one Will suffice for both.
The comminuted cork is delivered from the pockets 11 into the tubes by the plungers 22 in successive increments to compensate for the increased quantity of material in the tubes, cork delivering and packing means are provided to impart to the plungers movements of successive variable decreasing extent in the delivery movement thereof from a predetermined position of rest and returned to said position.
The means for transmitting movement of successive variable decreasing extent to the plunger carrier 27 comprises a stepped cam member in the form of a disk 31 having peripherally and radially disposed stepped faces 32. rlhis stepped cam member is fixed to a shaft 33 rotatable on an axis transverse to the plane of movement of the plunger carrier, and is rotatably mounted in a boss 34 of a slide 35 mounted to have reciprocatory t'movement in the plane of movement of the plunger carrier in a slideWay 36 of a bracket 37 and reciprocated through the rotative movement of a shaft 38 rotatable on a vertical axis and driven from a shaft 39 by bevel gearing 407 said shaft 38 carrying a disk 41 an-d operatively connected with the slide 35 by a link pivotally connected at 42 with the slide and at 43 with the disk eccentric to the axis of the disk carrying shaft. 39 being rotatably connected to the shaft 13 by a chain drive 43. To impart movements of successive variable extent to the plunger carrier in one direction from a predetermined position of rest and return the carrier to said position there is provided a slidable member 44 having a pivotal connection with the plunger carrier 27 by an arm 45 fixed at one end to the carrier and pivoted at the opposite end to the member 44, and having a lost motion connection With the slide 35 by extending the sh aft 33 of the stepped face cam member through a slot 46 in said member 44. As the slide 35 is moved in one direction the shaft 33 will engage with the Wall at one end of the slot, as shown in Figure and thereby transmit movement of the slide 35 to the member 44 and plunger carrier. As the slide 35 is moved in the opposite direction there is a slide movement of t-he slide 35 relative to the member 44 until a stepped face of the cam member engages an abutment 47 fixed to and projecting laterally from the member 44.
To intermittently advance or rotate the cam member one stepped face distance upon each reciprocation of said member, there is provided a` Wheel 48 slidably arranged With circumferentially spaced tooth sections 48 with intervening curved faces 49 and having a hub portion whereby it is rotatably mounted in a bearing 5() of an arm of the slide carrying bracket 37 With said Wheel abuttino` t3 against one end of t-he bearing and held The shaft against longitudinal displacement by a collar 51 fixed to the en-d of the Wheel hub projecting from the opposite side of said bearing, said Wheel constituting one member of Geneva gearing. The other member of the Geneva gearing is in the form of a wheel or disk 52 arranged with a tooth section 53 to mesh with the tooth sections 48 of Wheel 48 to impart an intermittent movement to said wheel 48 upon each revolution of the wheel 52, the curved portions 49 being of a curvature to coincide With the periphery of the disk 52 and the latter serving to hold the Wheel 48 against rotation. Vlhe Wheel disk 52`is fixed to the shaft 39 imparting rotative movement thereto. To transmit the movement of the Wheel 48 to the stepped face cam member the shaft 33 carrying said member has a bevel gear 54 fixed thereon meshing With a bevel gear 55 on a shaft 56 rotatably mounted in a bearing of an arm 57 extend-` ing downward from the slide 35 and held against longitudinal movement in said bearing by the hub of gear 55 abutting against one side of said bearing and a collar 53 fixed to said shaft at the opposite side of said bearing. By this arrangement the shaft 56 will participate in the reciprocatory movement of the slide The shaft 56 extends through the hub of the Geneva Wheel 48 and to per mit of axial movement of the shaft and participating movement thereof in the rotative movement of the Geneva Wheel the shaft has a key 59 for the slidable engagementof a key carried by the Geneva Wheel. The boss 34 and arm 57 of slide 35 are extended through a slot 60 in the slideway 3G to permit of reciprocatory movement of the slide 35. The stepped face cam member is constructed to impart ten material delivery and packing movements to the plunger carrier of successive variable predetermined extent for Which purpose the cam member is arranged Withv ten stepped faces. After the tenth ma` .terial delivery movement of the plunger car rier the tube carrier Wheels 9 are advanced to present a successive series of tubes 8 to the pockets 11 receiving material 'from the hopper outlets l2, which movement is imparted during the interval of an advancing and re tracting movement of the plunger carrier, and While the stepped face member is positioned as shown in Figures 3 and 4 by the rotation of shafts 33, 56, 39 in synchronism with the rotation of shaft 10 in conjunction with shaft 13 and is brought back to its position of rest by the rotation of shaft disk 4l.
It Will be obvious that various modifications may be made in construction and arrangement of parts, and that portions of the invention may be used Without others and come Within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention I claim:

The combination of a slidable plunger carrier, a reciprocatory slide, a peripherally and radially stepped member rotatably mounted on the slide, a slidable member connected to the carrier arranged with a lateral projecting abutment and having a lost motion connection With the slide, and driving means to impart reciprocatory movement of the same extent to the slide and intermittent rotative movement to t-he stepped member to successively position the stepped faces forengagement with the slidable member abutment and impart successive movement to said member and connected plunger carrier of connection with the slide and adapted to move the plunger carrier to a predetermined position in one direction, and the stepped faces adapted to impart movement to said carrier through the slidable member of successive variable extent in the opposite direc-` tion, means to reciprocate the stepped face member carrying slide, and means to rotate said stepped face member one stepped face distance upon each reciprocation thereof.

The combination with a slidably mounted plunger carrier, of means to impart reciprocatory movements thereto in series of successively decreasing extent, comprising a slide reciprocatory in the direction of movement of the plunger carrier, a cam arranged with peripherally and radially stepped faces carried by the slide to participate in the reciprocatory movement thereof and have rotative movement on an axis transverse to said reciprocatory movement, a slidable member having connection With the carrier and a lost motion connection With the slide and arranged With an abutment for the engagement of the stepped faces of the cam to transmit movement of the slide to the carrier of variable extent in one direction, and means to reciprocate the slide and impart rotative movement of stepped face distances to the cam upon each reciprocation of the slide.
5. Means to impart reciprocatory movements to a plunger carrier as claimed invclaim 4, wherein the means to impart the reciprocatory movement to the cam carrying slide comprises a rotary shaft having a crank connection with the slide.

Means to impart reciprocatory movements to a plunger carrier as claimedin claim 4, wherein the means to impart the reciproca.- tory movement to the cam carrying slide comprises a rotary shaft, a disk fixed to said shaft, and a. link having a pivotal connection With the slide and ther disk eccentric to the a-Xis thereof.

In means to impart reciprocatory movements to a plunger carrier as claimed in claim 4, Geneva gearing operative to impart intermittent rotative movement to the cam upon each reciprocation ofthe carrying slide, comprising a shaft rotatably carried by and participating in the reciprocatory movement of the slide on which one member of the Geneva gear is mounted to rotate rtherewith Without participating in thev reciprocatory movement thereof, a shaft rotatably carried by the slide upon which the cam is fixed and driven from the first shaft, and a driving shaft upon which the other member of the Geneva gear is fixed.
8. Means to impart reciprocatory movements to a plunger carrier as claimed in claim A 3, wherein the pivotal connection between the slidable member and the carrier comprises an arm pivotally connected to t-he slidable mem-y ber and fixed tothe carrier.

Means to impart reciprocatory movements to a plunger carrier as claimed in claim 4,'wherein the means to reciprocate the slide and impart rotative movement of stepped faces distances to the cam comprises a drive shaft connected to the cam by Geneva gearing and having a crank connection with the slide.

In apparatus for packing -comminuted cork into stick form, they combination with spaced and alined material carrying pockets, an intermittently rotatable support for a. tube adapted to position the opposite ends of tube in alinement with the pockets, a pair of slidably mounted plunger carriers operative to actuate plungers carried thereby to deliver the material from the pockets to opposite ends of a tube supported in alinement therewith, and means to impart a series of material feeding movements of successive variable extent to the plunger carriers, comprising a pair of members arranged With peripherally and radially stepped faces mounted to have rotative and reciprocatory movement in the plane. of movement of the plunger carrier, means to reciprocate and impart intermittent rotative movement of stepped face distances to said members upon each reciprocatory movement thereof, and
