CARL O. HARRIS, OF ORANGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO RODNEY HUNT MACHINE CO., OF ORANGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
DRIP FLANGE FOR WOOD ROLLS.
Application filed August 14, 1926. Serial No. 129 270.
This invention relates to an improvement over my prior Patent No. 1543,2381, patented June 23, 1925. In the construction as shown in that patent, it was posi-iilolo tor the water running over the cd e of the roll to drain down on the shaft and finally creep along the same and into the supporting bearings.
The principal obj cct of this invention is to provide means for preventing that action an d at the same time permit of the use of the plate 15 shown, therein and without modification of any of the parts at the end of the roll.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side View of the end of a roll constructed in accordance with said patent with a preferred embodiment of the additional feature of this invention shown in section; and
lli g. 2 .is an end view of the same.
I have shown the invention as applied to a wood roll 10 having a steel plate 15 at the end, said plate being provided with a circular flange 19 which is driven into the end of the roll. The method of holding the plate 15 need not be described herein, it is shown in my prior patent, except to mention the fac that the plate is provided with perforatla I through which lag screws 24: are inserted for securing the plate to the end of the roll.
Advantage is taken of this fastening means to secure under the heads of the lag screws 24, or other bolts an annular steel. plate 25. This plate is flat throughout its central portion and provided with an outwardly extending thin curved flange 26 extending all around the circumference and integral with the flat plate. The plate is provided with a central opcuinc having its edge roundedoiu; at 27 for receiving the projecting part of the plate 15. This has snug lit against the central boss on the plate 15 and makes a tight joint. As the outer corner of the plate 15 at 18 is rounded oil", in the form shown in said patent and is necessarily so rounded in the process of manufacture, it will be seen that this curved surface cooperates with the conas. three in number in the present case,
vex side of the flange 26 to provide a groove 28 extending all around the struct-iu'e and separating these curved parts.
sult.
Although I have illustrated and described only one form or" the invention, I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but what I do claim is 1. The combination with a wood roll and a circular metallic plate secured to the end thereof around the shaft, of an annular deflecting plate fixed to the outside of said circular plate and having an outwardly curved flange projecting therefrom, concave on the outer side, for receiving water passing over the end of the .roll and directing it around and away from the roll and to the bottom to prevent the water flowing or creeping in toward the journal.
2. As an article of manufacture, awood roll having a flanged metal plate at its end driven into the roll to secure it in position and provided with screws for assisting in holding it in place and having secured by said screws a separate plate on the outside projecting beyond the flanged plate for receiving water running over the end of the the roll.
In testimony fixed my signature.
roll and directing it away from the shaft of whereof I have hereunto at- CARL O. HARRIS.
