Original application filed February 2, 1924, Serial N 0. 690,265. Divided and this application filed October This invention relates to thread waxing de vices and more particularly to wax pots for mining threads for use in a shoe sewing machine.
An object of this invention is to produce a novel and improved wax pot so constructed as to be more accessible, with amore efficient arrangement of the parts, and having an improved and simplified form of heating attachment adapted to maintain a more delionto and constant heat control.
with these objects in view the invention consists in the devices, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The several features of the present inven 'tion and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate the several features of the invention.

'ihe wax pot, which is the subject matter of this invention, has been specifically adapted tor use in connection with the McKay sole shoe sewing machine described in detail in the applicants pending application Serial No. 690,265. filed February 2. 1924, of which the present application is a division.
The wax pot is electrically heated and thermostatically controlled. It consists of a body iortion 14. to contain the wax and atop portion consisting of two parts 16 and 18. The part 16 of the top portion is rigidly mounted in the machine while the part 18 is pivoted at 20 at one side of the part 16 so as to swing laterally from beneath the base of the horn and give access to the interior of the wax pot. The wax pot is heated by a heating member 22 containing an electric heating unit 24:. The heating member is pivoted at 26 at one side of the bottom of the wax pot and is forced upwardly toward the bottom of the pot by Serial No. 63,225.
means of a spring 28. The heat of the wax is controlled by moving the heating member toward and from the bottom of the pot. This movement of the heating member is produced by a thermostat consisting of two metal rods 30 and 32. The rod 30 slides vertically in a tube 34 which extends upwardly fromthe bottom of the wax pot to a point above the level of the wax. At its lower end the rod 30 bears against the heating member 22 and at its upper end is engaged by an adjustment screw in one end of a lever 36 pivotally mounted upon an arm projecting inwardly from the upper edge of the body portion of the pot. The rod 32 extends from the bottom of the wax pot and its upper end bears against the other end of the lever 36. With this construction as the heat of the wax in the body portion of the wax pot increases the rods 30 and lengthen and push the heating member 22 away from the wax pot and as the heat of the wax decreases the rods shorten and allow the heating member to return towards the wax pot. A web 38 extends upwardly from the bottom of the pot to increase the radiating surface and a web d0 extends downwardly into the body portion of the pot from the part 16 of the top portion to provide a support for a thread guiding roll 42 located near the bottom of the pot. This web also provides a sup port for a wax thread stripper consisting of a grooved rod 44: and a leaf spring 46 arranged to bear against the rod.
The part 16 ot the top portion of the wax pot is clamped upon the upper end of supporting rods secured to the machine column and the body portion of the pot is clamped upon these rods so as to be capable of being moved vertically when desired towards and from the top portion of the pot. It will be noted that the parts of the thermostat are mounted in the body portion of the pot while the thread guide and thread stripper are mounted on the top portion of the pot. The thread guide and thread stripper are thus rendered readily accessible when the body portion of the pot is lowered on the rods provided for that purpose.
The thread leads from the thread supply through a dry thread tension of usual construction, down into the body portion of the pot, around the thread guide upwardly through the wax stripper to the needle threading device of the machine.
The nature and object of the invention having been indicated and the preferred form of the invention having been described, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination of a wax pot with a heating member movable toward and from the pot and thermostatic means for control- King the movement of the heating member.
2. The combination with a a pot, of an external heating member, and means for moving the heating member towards and from the pot comprising a thermostat arranged to be aifeeted by the heat of the wax in the yet.
3. The combination with a wax pot, 0 an external heating member, and means for moving the heating member towards and from the pot comprising a metallic member exposed to the heat of the wax in the pot, and arranged to transmit the movements due to its contraction and expansion to the heating, member.
4. The combination with a wax pot, of an external heating member, and means for moving the heating member towards and from the pot comprising a metallic rod exposed to the heat of the wax in the pot and arranged to transmit its movements of expansion and contraction to the heatingmember.
5. The con'ibination with a wax pot, of an external heating member, and means tor moving the heating member towards and from the pot comprising a metallic rod exposed to the heat of the wax in the pot and having one end in engagement with the heating member, a lever having one end engaging the other end of the rod, and a metallic rod exposed to the heat of the wax in the pot and engaging the other end of the lever.
