This invention relates to drum construction for multiple disk clutches particularly to a parti cularl y simple and efficient key and drum construction by which the keys, which interlook with one set of friction disks are firmly secured to the drum body against the development of looseness etc.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and construct-ions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section,
of an inner clutch drum embodying my invention, the contiguous portion of the clutch shaft being also shown.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view looking to the right in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the detached keys.
This drum construction comprises generally keys extending lengthwise of the periphery of the drum body and secured to the drum body on opposite sides of the medial line of the keys, the keys also having comparatively Wide bases so that the means which secure the keys to the drum body are relieved of shearing stresses. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, the keys of multiple disk clutches have been secured to the drum body in many instances by rivets or other fastening means extending along the medial line of the key or so close thereto that the force applied to the keys by the disks in the normal use of the clutch exert a shearing strain on the fastening means or the rivets, which eventually loosens the fastening means and the keys or shears oil" the rivets. The construction for eliminating the development of such looseness and eliminating the liability of the fastening means shearing off, constitutes the subject matter of this invention.

9 are the keys, which extend lengthwise of the periphery of the body, that is in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the drum, these keys being formed with key portions or ribs which enter into or interlock with notches or grooves 10 in the disks l1 surrounding the drum 1, and with widened base portions secured to the drum. The keys are secured to the drum by two spaced apart or parallel rows of fastening means as rivets "cured to the underlying portion of the drum by suitable fastening members as rivets 13 extending through the flanges 12 and the underlying portion of the drum body. Preferably the keys or the base portions thereof are seated in lengthwise grooves 14L in the drum and the upper or outer faces of these flanges are located in arcs struck from the center of the drum and are flush with the periphery of the drum. The grooves themselves are formed with flat bottoms and also the bottoms of the keys are fiat. The base portions of the keys snugly seat in the grooves.
Owing to the use of two rows of fastening means for the clutch keys and the location of these rows on opposite sides of the key portions of the keys, and further owing to the wide base flanges of the keys, the rivets or fastening members are relieved of shearing stresses. In fact one set of rivets as those at the left of the key when the drive is from left to right are subjected to tension while those on the right are subjected to compression.
That I claim is 1. A drum construction for multiple disk clutches comprising a drum body having lengthwise grooves and a solid integral key structure and having a laterally extending base seated in each groove and a projecting and a central projecting key portion, the base being secured to the drum onopposite sides of 10 the'key portion. 7
