My invention relates to apivot point assembly, and has for its object to provide such an assembly which may be easily cheaply and accurately 'made and assembled, and
which will maintain the working parts in their proper relation to each other. i
This application is a division of my prior application Serial No. 563,932, filed May 26, 1922, and issued November 17,1925 as Patent No. 1,561,585. I

I have devised a pivot point assembly on.
which a scale beam may be adjusted angularly or laterally without danger of interfering with the'proper action of the pivot. A structure by which this result may be obtained, as well as other features of my invention, will appear as the description proceeds. In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a-plvot point assembly embodying my invention; Fig. 2 1s a section substantially on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end'view of one of the members. A support 1 is mounted'in any suitable manner, and has therein a vertical bore 2. A pin 3 mounted in bore 2 has ahead 4 formed with a knife-edge 5 on its upper side and an upright lug 6 at one end of the knife-edge. The knife-edge is substantially perpendicular to the axis of pin 3, and the surface of lug 6 next to the knife-edge is substantiall perpendicular thereto. The lug is prefera an integral portion of head 4, so that there is no danger of disturbing the correct relation of the knife-edge and the adjoining surface of lug 6. Pin 3 and'head .4 are made so that there is no danger of disturbing the relation of the knife-edge to the axis of the pin. A scale beam 7 is provided with a trans verse groove Sin its under side, the groove being of proper size to receive a wearing block 5). The wearing block is laterally adjustable in groove 8, and maybe fixed in adjusted position by a set screw 10. The under side of block 9 is notched to receive knife-edge 5, and the end '11 of the block is tapered to a point 12 at the end of the notch. End 11 may be cone-shaped, as shown, or maybe shaped like a pyramid, or tapered to a point in any desired manner.
It will be readily apparent that the pivot point assembly holds the beam securely against displacement'to the right, as shown in Fig. 1, because of the contact between point 12 and lug 6, and that this contact, as it occurs only at a point and that point is in line with the axis about which the beam turns, will result in the minimum of friction. Furthermore, pin 3 may be allowed to oscillate freely in'hole 2, so that the scale beam may be swung laterally to co-operate as desired with other mechanism, without any danger of disturbing the relation of the notch in the Wearing block to knife-edge 5, or that of bearing point l2and lug 6. Likewise block 9 may be adjusted laterally of the beam without affecting the co-operation of block 9 and head 4.

shown in Fig. 1; but I prefer to use pivot point assemblies, such as shown, in pairs, one having In 6 at the right and the other having a simi ar lug at the left.
t will be seen from the above that I have devised a pivot point assembly wherein the co-operating parts of the pivot are so con structed and mounted that they satisfactorily achieve the object of my invention.
Various obvious changes may be made in the described embodiment of my invention without departing from the scope of the ap--';
pended claims which define what I claim as new.
WhatI claim is: -1. In a balance point assembly, a member.
mounted to move about an axis and provided with a knife-edge substantially perpcndicular to said axis and having an abutment at one endof said knife-edge, and a member having a notch adapted to pivot onsaid knife-edge and having an end portion tapered to a point adapted to rest against said abutment.
2. In a balance point assembly, a member mounted movably about a fixed vertical axis and having a substantially horizontal knifeedge on its upper surface and an abutment at one end of said edge, and a member having a notch in its lower surface adapted to pivot on said knife-edge, the end of said notched member towards said abutment being tapered to a point at the end of the notch.
3. In a balance point assembly, a stationarily mounted member having a knife-edge formed thereon and having an integral lug extending at one end of said edge and having a bearing surface substantially perpendicular to said edge, and a member having a notch adapted to pivot on said knife-edge, the last said member tapering to a point at the end of the notch towards said lug.
4. In a balance point assembly, a support having a vertical bore therein, a pin fitting in said bore and having a head resting on the support, the head having, on its upper-side,
a knife-edge and a lug at the end of the knife- -edge, a beam having a transverse groove in its under side and a wearing block mounted adjustably in the groove, the wearing block having a notch in its lower side adapted to tially perpendicular to the axis of the pin.
and an integral lug presentinga surface at one end of and perpendicular to the knifeedge, a beam having a transverse groove in its under side, and wearing block adjustable lengthwise in said groove, the block having a notch in its under side adapted to pivot on said knife-edge, and the end of the block next to said'lug tapering to a point substantially in line with the axis of oscillation of the block on said knife-edge.
