IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE SCAFFOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,904, dated November 16, 1875; application filed May 1, 1875.
quires much time and labor, and in fact, when a few such alterations have been made, the scaffold has become nearly or quite useless for all purposes.
My present invention consists in a scaffold constructed so that it is adjustable as to area and height, and so that it may be readily folded up when not in use, or moved from room to room, the construction being as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the scaffold on the line Fig.2 is a sectional elevation on the line on m and yy of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows one of the stands detached and folded up. Fig. 4: shows one of the stand-foundations detached, it being a detail.

A represents the main stand,which is placed on the foundation B, having braces O, which are hinged to the stand, so that they may be i turned up, as seen in Fig. 3. The stand is attached to the foundation B by a short tenon,
D, and mortise E in the center of the foundation, and by the braces O, which are attached to the foundation by the slots F, the tenons G, and pins H. I are mortises in the stands, which admit the rails J. The scaffold may be contracted or expanded to suit apartments of different size by shoving the outer stands A nearer together or pulling them farther apart, or by adding more stands.
The rails J may be placed in mortises below, (see Fig. 1,) to adjust the scaffold to the required height.
0 is a scaffold-board resting on the rails J. At the top of all the stand-slots P, instead of mortises, are made.
This scaffold can be taken down and folded up when it is not required for use. It can be carried up or down stairs with perfectease, and handled generally much more conveniently than scaffolds of ordinary construction.
Having thus described m yinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A scaffold constructed as shown and described, having stands A and K, with aseries of rail-mortises, I, and slots P, hinged braces O, and foundations B and L, as set forth.
