r w. N. PARKES LUBRICATING MEANS FOR SEWING MACHINE LQOP TAKERS Filed Aug. 11, 1927 INVENTOR William M Parkes WITNESSES Patented Jan. 15, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
WILLIAM NELSON PARKES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER 7 MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
LUBRICATING MEANS FOR SEWING-MACHINE-LOOP TAKER-S.
Application filed August 11, 1927.
This invention relates to sewing machine loop-takers employed to cast needle-thread loops around a mass of under-thread contained in a bobbin-carrier journaled in the i loop-taker and has for its primary object to provide improved means for lubricating the bearing surface between the bobbin-carrier and the loop-taker.
In the present embodiment of the invent-ion, the loop-taker is provided with a raceway located at the upper rim of the loop-taker body, in which raceway is journaled the peripheral bearing-rib of a bobbin-carrier. The wall of the bobbin-carrier above the bearing-rib has an inclined thread-guiding surface provided with a plurality of oil-wells containing lubricant-conducting wicking. The oil-wells communicate with relatively constricted passages leading to the bobbin- 2 carrier bearing rib, some or all of which passages cut through and thereby connect oppo site faces of said bearing-rib. The wicking is preferably extended through the lubricant passages.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a substantially central, vertical section of a loop-taker containing the present improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bobbin-carrier. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the bobbin-carrier and loop-taker walls, taken substantially centrally through one of the oil-wells.
The loop-taker shown in the accompanying drawings is of the vertical-axis type for cooperation with a reciprocatory needle 1. The loop-taker comprises a base or inner body 2 cupped to form a cylindrical side wall 3 terminating at its upper rim in an internal flange 4. Closely embracing the wall 3 is an outer loop-taker body 5 secured upon the inner body by screws, as 6, said outer body 5 also being provided at its upper rim with an internal flange 7 spaced above the flange 4 and forming therewith a circular raceway 8.
J ournaled in the raceway 8 is a bearing-rib 9 provided at the upper periphery of a cylindrical bobbin-carrier wall 10 having a centrally open base constituted by a narrow in ternal flange 11 at the bottom of the wall 10. Sustained upon the flange 11 is a bobbin 12 which may be of any suitable construction. Projecting upwardly from said base flange 11 toward the bearing-rib 9 at the outer side of Serial No. 212,174.
the bobbin-carrier wall is an auxiliary loopspreading hook 13. V
The bearing-rib 9 is interrupted to provide a thread-clearance gap 14, above and adjacent to which gap the bobbin-carrier wall is provided with a notch 15 for the reception of a stationary stop-member (not shown) serving to restrain the bobbin-carrier against rotation with the loop-taker. The bobbin-thread guiding and tensioning devices of the present bobbin-carrier are substantially as disclosed in my prior United States Patent No. 1,484,151, Feb. 19, 1924.
Above the bearing-rib 9 and at the side of said gap 14 therein opposite to that occupied by the notch 15, the bobbin-carrier wall is provided with a thread-guiding cast-off 16. Formed in said cast-off 16 are a plurality of oiLwells, as 17, containing lubricant-conducting wicking 18. The well-bottoms open into constricted lubricant-conducting passages 19 leading to and cutting through the bearingrib 9 to connect the opposite surfaces thereof. The oil-well wicking 18, may, if desired be continued through the passages 19. Between the passages 19, the bearing-rib 9 is preferably provided with the usual transverse threadclearing slits as 20. The oil-well arrangement of the present lubricating device therefore provides a substantial lubricant supply for continuous operation of the loop-taker, and additionally provides means for controlling the flow of the lubricant by reason of the constricted, wicking-filled passages from the oil-wells.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is:
1. A sewing machine loop-taker provided with a race-way, a bobbin-carrier having a peripheral bearing-rib ournaled in said raceway, the wall of said bobbin-carrier adjacent the bearing-rib having an oil-well opening into a relatively constricted lubricant-passage to said bearing-rib.
2. A sewing machine loop-taker provided with a raceway, a bobbin-carrier having a peripheral bearing-rib journaled in said raceway, the wall of said bobbin-carrier above said bearing-rib having a plurality of oilwells opening into relatively constricted lubricant passages to said bearing-rib.
3. A sewing machine loop-taker provided with a raceway, a bobbin-carrier having a peripheral hearing-rib ournaled in said raceway the wall of said bobbin-carrier above said hearing-rib having a plurality of oilwells opening into relatively constricted lubricant passages to said bearing-rib, at least one of said passages connecting the opposite faces of the hearing-rib.
4. A vertical-axis loop-taker for sewing machines, provided at the top with a raceway, a bobbin-carrier having a peripheral bearing-rib journaled in said raceway, part of the bobbin-carrier wall above said raceway being formed with'an inclined, thread-100p guiding surface, said inclined surface having a plurality of oil-wells opening into relatively constricted passages leading to said bearing-rib. V
5. A sewing machine loop-taker provided with a raceway, a bobbin-carrier having a peripheral bearing-rib. journal'ed in said raceway, the walls of'said' bobbin-carrier adjacent said raceway having a plurality of oil-wells provided with l-ubricant-conducting wicking, said oil-wells opening into passages leading to said beari-ng rib.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
' WILLIAM NELSON PARKES.
