The numeral 10 indicates the walls of a cabinet to enclose the tubes, condensers, coils and other devices of radio receiving sets. I have not illustrated these devices as any arrangement desired may be used, and the specific construction or arrangement of these de vices forms no part of my invention. I have, however, merely shown in outline tuning devices for the set, which may be either condensers or variometers, and the front of the cabinet is composed of the panel 11, which may be of the usual bakelite or other insulating construction, and carries the phone jacks 12.
By the use of my improved adjusting mechanism for the tuning device or devices I have done away with the usual dials mounted in the panel, and have substituted for these dials, in the specific embodiment shown, a sliding element having a connection with the movable element of the tuning device or devices so that by shifting this slide on its support the tuning device or devices may be ad justed as desired. The panel 11 is provided with an elongated slot or opening 13 over which is mounted a strip of white celluloid or other suitable material 14, which may be marked for different broadcasting stations,
and this strip has a longitudinal slot 15 through which a handle 16, such as a rubber knob, projects so that it is accessible for manipulation at the front of the panel. This knob is mounted on a slide 17, which slide is mounted for sliding movement on a suitablesupport. This support in the construction shown comprises a square or rectangular bar 19 secured to the rear of the panel by any suitable means, such as screws 20, and the slide 17 may be mounted to slide on this bar in any suitable manner. The constructi on shown comprises a body, member 21 arranged to embrace three sides of the bar and a plate 22 secured to the body and over the remaining side of the bar to retain the body portion on the bar, but will allow shifting movement of the slide longitudinally of the bar. The handle or knob 16 also carries a pointer 23 which cooperates with the scale 14 to indicate the position of the slide.
The bar or support 19 is provided with outwardly extending arms 24 at its opposite ends on which are mounted a pair of flanged pulley wheels 25, and the moving element of one'or more tuning devices 26, such as condensers or variometers, of which I have shownonly the a shaft 27, is adapted to be shifted by means of a flanged pulley 28, secured to this shaft, so that by. turning the pulley the movable element will be turned on its pivot. This pulley is connected by means of a flexible connection 29 to the slide 17, this connection extending in opposite directions from the slide over the pulleys 25 and preferably entirely around the pulley 28 as indicated in the drawing. This flexible connection may be of any suitable materi'al such as a bundle of small wires or a round leather belt. It will be apparent that with this arrangement shifting of the slide 17 will shift the flexible connection and rotate the pulley 28 andthrough it the movable element of the tuning device, and the parts are preferably so proportioned that shifting the slide 17 in either direction from the central position to the end of slot 15 will turn the shaft 27 and pulley 28 one-half revolution to tune to the various stations. In the drawing I have shown the flexible connection 29 as passing about the pulley 28 on one tuning device only, in the drawing the central one, but it will be apparent that this connection may be passed about similar pulleys connected to the movable elements of one or more of these devices, such as the two shown in outline on opposite sides of the central device shown in the drawing, to simultaneously tune these devices, and the operation will be exactly the same as with the single device.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a radio receiving mechanism including a tuning device having a rotary element, a panel at one side of said device, a support in the rear of the panel, a member mounted to slide on said support, means accessible at the front of the panel for sliding said member on its support, and a driving connection from said member to the rotary element for adjusting the same by said sliding movement.
2. In a radio receiving mechanism, a tuning device having a rotary element, a panel at one side of said device, a. support mounted at the rear of the panel and extending longitudinally thereof, a slide mounted for adj ustment longitudinally of the support, means accessible at the front of the panel for adjusting the slide on the support, and a flexible driving connection from the slide tothe rotary ele ment for adjusting said element by movement of said slide.
8. In a radio receiving mechanism, a tuning device having a rotary element, a panel at one side of said device, a support mounted at the rear of the panel and extending longi tudinally thereof, a slide mounted I'or adjustment longitudinally of the support, said panel being provided with a longitudinal slot and a scale for indicating stations at the side of said slot, a pointer connected to the slide and cooperating with said scale, a knob connected to the slide and projecting through the slot where it is accessible for manipulation from the front of the panel, and a drivof the panel for shifting said slide, pulleys mounted at opposite sides of said slide, and a flexible connection passing over said pulleys from the slide to the tuning device for adjusting the same by shifting said slide.
5. In a radio receiving mechanism, a tuning device having a rotary element, a pulley connected to said element, a panel at one side of said device, a support extending longitudinally of the panel at the rear thereof, a pair of pulleys mounted at the opposite ends of said support, a slide mounted for adjustment along said support, a flexible connection leading in opposite directions from said slide passing over the second mentioned pulleys and about the first pulley, and means accessible at the front of the panel for shifting said slide.
6. In a radio receiving mechanism, a tuning device, a panel at one side of said device having a longitudinal slot therein, a scale at the side of said slot, a supporting bar mounted at the rear of said panel, a. pair of pulleys mounted at the opposite ends of said bar, a member mounted to slide along said bar, a flexible connection from said member passing over the pulleys to the tuning device to ad just said device as the member is shifted on the bar, a pointer carried by said member cooperating With the scale, and a knob carried by the member and projecting through the slot where it is accessible at the front of the panel for shifting the member on the bar.
