Description

Dec. 18, 1928. 1,695,443
s. STUDLEY, JR
BUILDING BLOCK Filed Sept. 16, 1927 Patented Dec. is, 1928.
'i GILBERT STUDLEYQJR, 0F, Yen-mourn, MAssAci t-Isrirrs ,7 Application fiie'as t benie,i927! sr ai -ivorz asvsi i fThis invention relates to a cenienti'tious building block, particularly adapted for-use in constructingcesspools, drains andthe like.
The object ofthe invention istoprovidea building blockof ,tl'i'e character-specified, of a novel and superior construction, which is par ticularly adapted for the construction ofthe walls of a cesspool or; drain, in a rapidand sists in the cementitious molded blockhereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims at theend of this specification.
In .thedrawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention,Fig. 1 is a perspective view of apart of a cesspool or drain 7 j constructedof building blocks embodying the "curved inner and outer sides 10, 12, with a present invention Fig. 2 is a plan View of the improved block; Fig. 3', a front View of the same; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the block show'ni'n Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail showing a modifiedform.-of tongue and groove construction.
Referring to the drawing, the improved building block is preferably composed of hardened, cementitious material, such as Portland cement and sand, formed into special shape as will bedescribed.
Referring, now to the drawing, the illustrated building block is preferably composed of a mixture of cementand sandin any usual or preferred proportions, aiid nay be molded in a suitable mold to provide the block with tongue 13 upon one end Wall 14, and with a; groove 15 on-the other end wall 16..
Th'e'block is further provided with a drain;
age slot 17 preferablymolded in the bottom wall of the block, and extended from the outer to the inner sides 10, -12 of theblo'cktov permit free drainage.therethrough.
In order to facilitatethemolding operation, and particularlythe' operation of withdrawing the block from the mold, I prefer to bevel or taper the sidewalls 21:, 22 of the slot 17, andpreferably in a direction fromthe in ner SIClG' lOto the-outer side .12, asshown.
In practice, I preferto mold-the 'ceinenti--- tious blocks in approximately the following dimensionsflen gth I6 inches; ,widtl l inchesi and height 8 inches. The drainageslotis preferably made of a length of; about 71,4, inches at the inner Wall lOoftheblo k, d
7 inches at the outer wall-0f the block. The",
length of the'block, leaving bearing portions 23, 24 in the bottom Wall of the blockof subslot is preferably disposed centrallyof'the" stantially inches in length. The drainage slot is preferably made about fl inches in height; 7 I T e side walls of a cesspoolor draininay be rapidly and economically constructedby use I of the present block, and in use succeeding tiers of the blocksfare laid. up, either with or without grout, Withthe tongue of one block fitted into the groove of, thenext adjacent block, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The curvature of the block andthe be laid up on any desired curvaturewithin practical limits, the grooves being made sufficiently larger than the tongues to provide for some clearance. In laying up the Wall, it is also preferred to lay the. blocks so as toybreak joints, and
when so laid, the drainage slots are spaced 1 to distribute the drainage effectively, as will be apparent from inspection ofjFig. 1.
slot is conducive to insuring efficient drainthe slots becoming stopped up.
age at all times with minimum liability of tongue] and groove construction enable theblocksto' The provision of the elongated drainage i i In addition the simplicity of the present I construction of block enables the blocks to be manufactured more economically than other constructions of drainage blocks of which I am, aware.
The provision of the'bevel end walls21,-22 i I ofthe drainage slot, enables the blocks to be readily removed from the molds with minimum liability of breaking the blocks.
In Fig. 5, a modified form ofa tongue 25, andof a groove2 6,is shown, in which the cooperating surfaces are formedas portions of a cylinder. 1 This construction enables the blocks to be set upwithin relatively'large ment. n
v limits of curvature while maintaining the; I tongue and grooves in interlocked arrange \Vhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that the inventionmay be embodied in other forms Withinthe sfiope of the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is r 1. A building block of the character specified, comprising an elongated body portion provided with an openelongated slot in. the
ottom Wall thereof extendedfrom the inner to'ithe outer wallof the block-and provided with beveled end Walls converging toward the outer Wall of saidhlook, a,
2. A molded cementitious block; for the purpose specified, comprising a curved elon: gatedbloek having atongueat one end and a groove on the other, and provided in its bottom Wall with an elongated drainage slot extended throughthe body" thereof,,sa1d slot eing provided'iwith bemla finde llfl for the purpose specified;
3; A" molded cementitious block for the purpose-specified; comprising-e curved elongated block having a tongue at one end and a groove on the other, and provided in one drainage slot extended throu h the body thereof, saidslothaving its end Walls taper- 'of its longitudinal walls with an elongated ing from the concaveto. thevconvex side. wall 30 thereof,
In testimony whereof, I havesigned my name to this. specification.
