Description

Dec. 11, 1928. 1,695,166
H. 'r. w| soN HOLDER Filed Aug 22, 1927 INVENTOR W av Wrmsss: ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 1-1, 1928.
PATE'l @FFEQE.
HARRY '1. WILSON, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVAWTLL HOLDER.
Application filed. August 22, 192?. Serial No. 214,745.
The present invention relates to holding devices for newspapers, letters and the like and is of the type in the nature of a grip adapted to be attached to the walls or door sills of a house or to mail boxes, posts or the like.
Objects of the invention are to provide an attachment of the above character between the gripping arms of which newspapers, letters and the like may be readily inserted and which will firmly grip the same against displacement by wind or other causes but which may be readily removed by a mail carrier or other properly authorized person.
()ther objects are simplicity of construe tion and cheapness of manufacture.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows the device as attached to the side of a house and holdings newspaper or the like therein. 7
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig ure 3, showing on the scale enlarged of Figure 1 the manner of attaching the device to the side of a house.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig ure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows and showing the device on a still further enlarged scale with the object held thereby in Figure 1 removed.
The holder which is preferably made of springy sheet metal and is formed by striking up portions therefrom and bending the metal into the fo'ms desired is comprised of a base 10 which may be secured to a supporting structure 11 by means of screws 12 or other suitable means which may be passed through apertures 13 formed in the base. Extending at substantially rightangles to the base are arms 14 which may have arms 15 thereof curved inwardly to ward each other. The arms 15 may be curved at their outer ends 16 away from each other to fac'litatc the insertion of a paper or other article therebetwcen. l ingers 1? may struck from the body of the arms 15 as shown in Figures 1 and 3 and may con- Verge toward each other at their free ends, said free ends having the tippedportion 18 thereof bent outwardly as shown in Figure 3 to prevent the fingers from becoming engaged with the newspaper or other articles held between the arms 15.
rom the above description it will be cadily understood that the device as herein described is adaoted for gripping newspapers, packages or the like and when bulky articles. are placed between the arms 15 the lingers 17 will be pressed outwardly to form a substantially continuous surface with the surface of the arms from which they are struck and will exert a gripping action on the portion of the newspaper extended therebetween.
it will be understood further that when such large articles or packages are placed between the arms that the tension strength of the hold of the arms will be exerted in helding said articles while on the other hand if a thin light article, such as a letter, post or the like, is to be held the same will be ripped between the fingers 17, only the tension strength of which is sufficient to hold such articles.
Having described my invention. what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a base having means associated therewith for attaching the same to a wall or the like, arms extending atsubstantially right angles to said base and converging throughout a portion thereof toward each other, said arms having lingers struck from the surface thereof and extending between the arms toward each other, the ends of said fingers being bent away from each other.
2. An article holder of the character described comprising base, means for securing said base to a supporting structure, arms formed with said and extending at right angles therefrom, said arms including curved portions disposed in converging relation with respect to each oti and terminating in outwardly curved ends, ling rs struck tirom said arms and extending inwardly in converging relation from adjacent the outer ends of said arms and said lingers having their free ends bent outwardly.
In testimony whereof I in signature.
