BARBED WIRE-FENCE.
No.169,3v9,3i Patented-Nomi. 1875.
WITNESS? I INVENTOR- W Z@ N- PETERS. PHOTO-UTHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. D C.
"U1\TITE STATES ABRAM V. WORMLEY, OF OORNTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED-WIRE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent ,N 0. 169,393, dated November 2,1875 application filed September 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:.
Be it known that I, ABRAM V. WORMLEY, of Gornton, DeKalb county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbed Fences, of which the following is a description:
My invention consists of a barbed fence, in which the several projecting points of a flexible plate are interwoven with a wire strand of two or more wires, twisted with each other, toforin a single strand, with the interwoven points standing out in different directions from between the twisted strands, and forming a metallic barbed line for turning horses,
cattle, sheep, and hogs, and thus combine durability and cheapness in a barbed fence.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the metallic barb, and Fig. 2 a wire strand and the barbs interwoven with the several twisted wires which form the strand.
The metallic barb a shown is tri-pointed; but I do not confine myself to this particular form, as it maybe many-pointed in various ways. It must, however, be of flexible metal, with long projecting points I; c d to admit of their being interwoven with wire strands twisted with each other to form a single strand, 0, within the twisted folds of which the points b c d are confined, and stand out therefrom to form barbs in different directions upon the line. The twisting of the wire into a single strand bends and forms the wires into barbs therewith.
The mode of twisting is .by placing the metallic barb astride one of the wires which is to form the strand, and placing another wire upon each side of it, and twisting these wires together into one causes the barbpoints to be interwoven with the strands and held fast therein. Thepoints are then. bent over the strand, so as to arrange them in a sort of triangular position in relation to each other.
I claim- The metallic barb or, having its points I) c d interwoven with two or more separate strands of wire twisted together to form a singlebarbed stand, 0, with the barbs fastened between and standing out from the folds of the strand, substantially as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of September, 1874.
