IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-LEAF SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,388, dated November 2, 1875; application filed July 21, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH WANNER, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table-Leaf Supports, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.

Sliding shelves and sliding bars have been used for the support of drop-leaves in tables and other furniture where the frame or body of same had ample depth of material to ad mit of applying them, and could therefore be made of wood; but in the ordinary dropleaf table it has been found difficult to apply sliding bars on account of the slender frame of the former. I

The object of my invention is to apply sliding bars to ordinarydrop-leaf tables without materially impairing thestrength of the table, and which shall be simple, strong, durable, easily managed, and. not liable to be swelled by moisture; and it consists in a metallic box provided with a straight groove on top, in which aunetallic bar slides, said box being fastened to the under side of the table by screws through flanges or enlargements on the sides of the box, and fitted into arecess in the side rail of the table, whereby it receives additional support, and in a straight metallic bar, fitting the groove in the box aforesaid, and provided with a stop or check at the inner end, to prevent its being drawn entirely out of the box, and a loose ring at the outer end as a handle, which will drop out of the way of the leaf when down, all constructed and applied as hereinafter more fully vdescribed.

a is the straight metallic bar, provided at the inner end, on the under side, with a'spur or projection, s, which acts as a stop in drawing out the bar, and with a ring, 1, at the outer end, as a handle, which is loose thereon, and does not interfere with the leaf when down. I) is the metallic box, having a straight groove,

0, in which the bar a slides, and is of a depth to bring the top of the bar flush with the upper surface of the box. It is attached to the under side of the table-top by screws passing through enlargements 0-6 on its sides, and receives additional support by the side rail 1 of the table, which it penetrates to bring the outer end flush with the outer edge of said rail, whereby it is brought as near as possidrop-leaf, and obtains greater purbles, is generally small, and retain more stitfness to the table, and obtain more opportunity for securing the top to the frame. The construction of the box, with its open groove on top, renders it easily moldedand cast, and

being secured to the top by screws, as described, the bar a is kept at all times bearing against the same, even should the top warp and spring loose fromthe side rail.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The metallic box I), provided with straight groove 0 in its top, and enlargements e e on its sides, attached to the under side of the table by screws through said enlargements, and fitted into a recess in the side rail 12, and the straight metallic bar a, provided with spur s atthe inner end, and ring 7 at the outer end, and fitted to slide in groove 0, constructed and combined with a drop-leaf table, substantially in the maiiner described, for the purpose specified.
