This invention relates to improvements in window shades.
The primary object ofthe invention resides in a means for raising and lowering a window shade to any desired adjusted position without necessitating an operator to stand v upon some object to reach the shade when in a raised position, as the operating means is always within reach of an operator.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a window shade of the winding type in which the shade proper may be quickly and Y easily removed from its winding rod should the shade become worn or soiled, the shade being constructed of a washable fabric so that the same may be washed as required and replaced on the rod for further use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which :f-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window l with my improved shade in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View on the line 2 2 of Figure 1. i
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the shade per se. Y
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of bracket.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates a window casing of any well-known construction, and to which my improved window shade 11 is shown applied. The shade 11 includes a rod 12 which is square in cross Vsection or otherwise provided with flat surfaces for a purpose to be presentlv described. The
Vends of the rod are reduced to provide trunrod 12 square in cross section, the rod will wind the fabric thereon upon rotation of the same. p
For imparting rotation to the rod 12, l provide a winding and unwinding mechanism 19 which includes a sprocketl wheel 2() xedly mounted on the trunnion 14 and which wheel is interposed between spaced ears 21 entending from the base of the bracket 16. Botataably mounted in spaced arms 22 also extending from the base of the bracket 16 and disposed above the ears 21, is a roller 23, the periphery of which extends outward beyond'the periphery of the sprocket wheel 20 so as to hold one lead 24 of an endless sprocket chain or the like 25, out of contact with the teeth of the wheel. The other lead 26 of the chain engages the teeth of the sprocket wheel and is held in engagement bythe inner walls of the spaced ears and the base ct the bracket 16. The chain passes over the roller 23 and hangs down alongside of the window casing to a point adjacent the window sill so as to be within easy reach of an operator.
ln practice, should it be desired to lower the shade 17, one of the leads of the chain is pulled downward which causes turning of the sprocket wheel 20, which movement is likewise imparted to the rod 12, causing the shade to pay out therefrom. Should it be desired to raise the shade, the other lead of the chain is pulled, causing a reverse movement of the sprocket wheel and rod, and consequently winding the shade or curtain on the rod. ln the event that the fabric shade 17 should become soiled, the same may be unwound from the rod 12 and removed therefrom by untying the strings or tape 18, thus permitting the shade to be washed and again replaced on the rod. The Vlower end of the shade 17 is provided with the usual hem 27 open at opposite ends for removably receiving a stiffening rod 28 and which rod is removed when washing the shade.
In Figure 4 of the drawing, have shown a slightly modified form of bracket 16 which is identical in construction to the bracket 16 of the preferred form with the exception that the same is intended to be mounted on the inner face of the window casing instead of on the frontcf the same. The difference exists in that only one ear 21 is provided, which co-acts with the base of the bracket for rotatably supporting one end of the rod thereof.
What is claimed as new is A shade raising and lowering device coniprising a bracket adapted to be mounted upon a supporting` structure` spaced shade roller bearing` plates on said bracket, a sprocket Wheel adapted to be fixed to a shade roller and interposed between said bearing plates-` an endless chain engaging said sprocket Wheel with one lead of the same disposed between said bearing plates, and a roller journalled in said bracket above said sprocket Wheel to space the other lead of said chain away from said sprocket Wheel.
In testimony whereof l have aixed iny signature. l
GAETANG PAGANO.
